Mission: The society of hospital medicine is dedicated to promoting the highest quality care for all hospitalized patients. Shm is committed to promoting excellence in the practice of hospital medicine through education, advocacy and research.
Programs: Educationannual meeting is to be part of the hospital medicine movement and to participate in over 100 different educational sessions. Additionally, at the 2017 annual meeting there were over 900 participants in the poster session that showcases areas of academic research, innovation and key clinical cases. Pediatric hospital medicine meeting is to be part of the largest meeting devoted to pediatric hospital medicine. Participate in over 75 different educational sessions. Additionally, at the 2017 pediatric hospital medicine annual meeting there were over 310 participants in the poster session that showcases areas of education, clinical, and quality improvement. Other education initiativesleadership academy - shm conducts a 3 part educational training course that prepares physicians for managerial and c-suite positions. These courses focus on personal, organizational and team skill development for those looking to transition beyond the clinical role. To date, shm has had over 1,500 graduates of the leadership academy. Qsea - in response to changing requirements for residency training programs and increasing need for systems-based competency, shm developed a course that provides instruction and guidance on how to teach trainees (primarily residents) quality and safety topics. The quality and safety educators academy provides medical educators with the knowledge and tools to develop quality improvement and safety curricula and lead new initiatives in changing environments. The quality and safety educators academy is a 2-1/2 day academy designed as a faculty development program and sponsored by the society of hospital medicine (shm) and the alliance for academic internalmedicine (aaim). It is intended for:- program directors or assistant program directors interested in acquiring new curricular ideas to help them meet the acgme requirements which require residency programs to integrate quality and safety into their curriculum- medical school leaders or clerkship directors developing quality and safety curricula for students- faculty who are beginning a new role or expanding an existing role in quality and safety education- quality and safety leaders who wish to extend their influence and effectiveness by learning strategies to teach and engage traineesaha- for seven years, shm has co-presented the academic hospitalist academy, which provides academic hospitalists with the educational, scholarly and professional development skills they need to advance their careers and begin a pathway to success in academic hospital medicine. The principal goals of the academy are to:- develop junior academic hospitalists as the premier teachers and educational leaders at their institutions- help academic hospitalists develop scholarly work and increase scholarly output- enhance awareness of the value of quality improvement and patient safety work- support academic promotion of all attendeesshm learning portal: in 2013, shm developed a robust digital learning strategy, including investing in a learning management system and executing a needs assessment to identify key learning areas for content development. Shm's learning portal has engaged over 9,500 hospitalists in different cme activities, including live activity evaluation, maintenance of certification medical knowledge modules and other cme activities. Topics cover advocacy, practice management, quality and patient safety topics and are based on the hospital medicine core competencies and current theories in adult learning. Shm spark: since 2010 the american board of internal medicine (abim) and the american board of family medicine (abfm) have offered the focused practice in hospital medicine (fhpm) maintenance of certification (moc) pathway. In 2015, in response to the lack of comprehensive study and self-assessment materials targeted toward the fphm recertification exam, shm launched the first version of shm spark, an online learning and exam preparation tool. Version 1. 0, launched in 2015 targeted the 38% of the fphm exam blueprint most unique to hospital medicine, including palliative care, patient safety, perioperative care and consultative comanagment, and quality, cost, and clinical reasoning. A full version was launched in january of 2017, including 100% of relevant internal medicine clinical content on the fphm exam blueprint.
site-based demonstration projectsthe center for quality improvement was created to promote innovative and effective methods for improving patient care and sustainable outcomes through quality improvement and patient safety initiatives. The center develops programs and resources to support hospitalists and other hospital clinicians in improving care and sustaining better outcomes for patients. In 2011, shm became the first national medical society to be recognized with the eisenberg award. The award was granted in recognition of shm's mentored implementation model which has been utilized in more than 500 hospitals across the country. Shm's center for qi currently manages 20 quality improvement programs that provide key quality and patient safety resources including web-based training toolkits. In fy2017, the center for quality improvement continued to support a variety of projects addressing multiple topics including opioid stewardship and monitoring, glycemic control, medication reconciliation, strategies for the safe use of high risk medications in the hospital and improving handoffs of care. Shm's mentored implementation model continues to be an important mechanism for facilitating both technical and cultural change in hospitals across the country. The center continues to receive revenue from a variety of funders. Examples of some of the projects, campaigns and programs within shm's center for quality improvement portfolio include: - improving pain management and reducing adverse events associated with opioids (radeo)- medication reconciliation (marquis2)- fight the resistance antibiotic stewardship campaign- glycemic control for inpatients- transitions of care (project boost)- improving handoffs of care (i-pass)- improving end-of-life care in the hospital- copd management- reduction of cauti and clabsi in the intensive care unit- pain management
membershipshm promotes exceptional care for hospitalized patients. The organization supports and enhances the practice of hospital medicine and the patients it serves through a network of more than 16,000 members. Shm provides its members with a range of publications and information, including but not limited to: the hospitalist (published monthly), the journal of hospital medicine (published monthly), the hospital leader blog, and a variety of special interest community forums and regional chapter networks. Shm has also developed a range of products and services to promote quality improvement and practice management efficiency as well as comprehensive educational resources designed by hospitalists for hospitalists to ensure that practitioners are up to date on clinical best practices.
