Last year I adopted 10 dogs, we took good care of them and got them the medication needed and the surgey that they needed and then 5 months later we gave 8 loving dogs away to people that wanted them, but we made sure that they would treat our dog with care and love. It was hard going through 3 bags of dog food each week. Blue, Pedigree, and wet food. the other three we kept and that put us at 10 dogs but we didn't mind.

We have adopted 4 wonderful pets and fostered and helped others to find good homes over the last ten years from the SPCA here in Martinsville. The employees and volunteers go above and beyond to provide loving care to all of the animals there, and the facility is so well kept. Even though Martinsville was on the list of the ten poorest cities in America recently, our city is rich with people who love and care for animals, as is shown in our No Kill community status that has happened only because of the efforts of our SPCA!

My husband and I have adopted 2 wonderful dogs from our local spca. Everyone there is dedicated to making sure all the animals they shelter are placed in their forever home. They are a hardworking group and are willing to go above and beyond for these animals.
The shelter is campaigning and is very close to its goal of becoming a no kill shelter by 2015. Until they reach this major accomplishment they work tirelessly with other facilities to assure the placement of all the animals in safe homes.
You will not find a more loving , compassionate group of people working hard for the less fortunate animals in our area.
I am proud to have them as our Animal Advocates !

Martinsville-Henry County SPCA is an amazing organization. Working towards a no-kill shelter is quite a major accomplishment. They do unique fundraising and are extremely successful taking care of and placing the animals in forever homes. We adopted our Molly over a year ago. We met her when we went to the facility to pick up some fundraising items. Our personal vet is the Supervising Veterinarian at this facility, so we went back to meet him on the day that Molly was being spayed. We wanted to make sure that he felt Molly would be a good fit to our family with our other 2 dogs. He highly recommended, so now we have a sweet girl, Molly. Her personality reminds me of our Buffy that we lost to cancer in 2010. The staff were quick to process this adoption.
The use of Facebook has made it easier for supporters to assist with the SPCA's initiatives, especially their assistance to the Henry County Animal Control. This initiative has saved so many more lives. Many thanks to all the professional staff and volunteers, and supporters of the Martinsville-Henry County SPCA.

Every person I have dealt with through the Martinsville Henry co SPCA has been exceedingly kind and helpful. While in the process of adopting my pit bull Lilly, they helped and supported me every step of the way. The love and dedication they have for these sweet animals who need it so badly is astounding. Their Facebook page is beyond helpful and informative and always up to date. These are just a few examples of why these guys ROCK!

Over the past 16 months I have adopted 1 huge dog (English Mastiff), one adult cat and a kitten from the Martinsville SPCA. The staff have been most informative and helpful with our decision making. They work so hard to help these animals find a forever home. They will spend the time needed to answer questions, making absolutely sure you are happy with your decision. Kudos to Mandy the cat manager for being so patient with me while I was trying to decide between two kittens. She told me everything she could about them. I was so happy with the SPCA staff and their devoted compassion to these animals that I went to a Volunteer class and try to stop by to help fold clothes and give some attention to all the beautiful cats and kittens. Thanks for all you do, keep up the good work! The animals depend on your unconditional love!

The Martinsville-Henry County SPCA is the most amazing place in the world to me. Not only the staff members but the animals and the care they have for them has helped me to realize exactly what I want to do in my future. Just walking into the SPCA makes me happier and feel loved. The staff members aren't just staff members or just friends; they're my family. The Martinsville-Henry County SPCA has changed my life and made it so much better.

I recently wanted to adopt a dog that had been mistreated and was at risk of being euthanized from the city pound in the area. This group assisted by providing all the info that I needed and went a step further by having the dog released to their care and getting his shots taken care of so that I could pick him up over the weekend. This allowed me not to worry that anything would happen to this dog because he was being cared for by this group. They went above and beyond to help save this dog as they do for so many other animals. They provide many services and their staff clearly loves what they do!

I have had the great privilege of adopting and fostering animals for this wonderful SPCA. Most of my precious babies come from this shelter. The animals are so well cared for, and the employees are caring and more than competent. It's apparent how much they love the animals who are blessed to be brought to them. This shelter would be terrific without its no-kill status, but knowing that it is a no-kill facility makes me value it even more.

In 2008, I lost my 3 year old Yorkie to lymphoma. It came as such an unexpected blow when the diagnosis was made, and he was gone 6 short weeks later. Although I still had one other Yorkie, "Dudley" was my 'love dog' and snuggler. I was so upset and had such a void, I didn't know what to do to change it. Then came the article in the Martinsville Bulletin about a puppy mill raid in Hillsville, VA with lots of dogs, most pure bred, that were being moved to various shelters for housing. Our local SPCA obtained quite a few of these animals and some were Yorkies. Curiosity got the best of me, and I went to the facility to check it out. And that is where I met "Quincy". There were several Yorkies that were there, but something drew me to him. Having been shaved and bathed, he looked the least like a Yorkie, but he had such a sweet disposition and would always lift his paw to me whenever I spoke to him. I am married and have a son (who was 2 1/2 at the time) that I needed to win over. Of course, my husband thought I was crazy because "we still had one dog" and this was a "troubled dog", but I had to make him understand I had a void that I needed to fill and "saving" this dog and giving him the love I had was just what I needed. After several more trips to the SPCA for everyone to meet and make sure he was "kid" friendly, I filled out the application and received him. The first year was very hard on all of us (dogs included). Since Quincy came from the environment he did, he had to learn everything. And, with improper health care over the years, there were many health battles and unexpected vet expenses we faced, but we trudged through them all. And I am happy to report, that Quincy has done beautifully and has become the most beautiful and kind "love" dog I so desperately wanted and needed. People often tell me how lucky Quincy is that I saved him, but I am quick to point out, that, in his own special way and his timing in my life, he actually saved me a little, too. Had it not been for the SPCA and their tireless efforts to help the animals of the community and beyond, I would not have been blessed by this sweet animal. My family are active members (and have been for many, many years) of the Martinsville/Henry County SPCA. I am a huge supporter and advocate for their hard work We are a very luck community to have them here !!!! THANK YOU !!!!

The staff and volunteers go above & beyond their "job". Without the M/HC SPCA the kill rate was unbelievable........now we are fast becoming a no kill area! The SPCA works hard in a very depressed area .......with the unemployment rate in double digits..........but they still strive to do the impossible. I have 2 dogs & 2 cats........all from the SPCA. I have been a volunteer since 2009 and hopefully will be a volunteer there for many years to come.

Three stray girl kittens showed up at my door about six years ago. I didn't have the money to have them fixed, needless to say they started re-populating the neighbor hood. About 15 kittens later, I found out the SPCA of Martinsville would help me get them fixed and a rabies shot. I think it was about 8 kittens the first time and about 7 the next. This was for one fee each time, at a price I could handle. The staff there was extremely helpful and answered my many, many questions. I found homes for the kittens much easier after they where fixed and had their rabies shot.
Also several of my family members have adopted dogs from here and they were really happy with all the services and help their received. Thank you to the SPCA.

Everywhere we travel, we make it a point to visit the local humane society, spca or pounds. We talk to people to find out what the state of animal welfare is for their area. Time and time again we come home to Martinsville and Henry County proud to have the hardest working group of professional and volunteers making our area a humane and safe place to be a companion animal. We are so proud to be a part of such a committed group of people. Keep up the life saving work!

I think that SPCA of Martinsville/Henry County is a WONDERFUL place. My family adopted a rescue dog from there in 2007 (hard to believe that it has been 5 years over Thanksgiving weekend) that was a puppy mill rescue. The dog has turned out to be the most loving and gentle creature you could ask for. The SPCA does great work and makes sure no healthy animals are euthanized which, in today's time, is such a special thing. I am always trying to educate people on adopting and am forever recommending they give the SPCA a call or visit. They are a great organization doing great work !!!!!

As a member of a dog rescue who works with the Martinsville-Henry County SPCA, I cannot say enough good things about this organization. They are WONDERFUL to work with. Animal rescue is often very painful, challenging and difficult, especially when complicated by the politics that affect so many shelters and those that they work with - NOT SO HERE. This SPCA's goal is pure and simple: find as many animals loving homes as possible. They are incredibly easy to work with and all of the animals we have seen in their shelter or rescued from area pounds through their efforts are obviously very well cared for and loved. I cannot say enough good things about them. I encourage any rescue, adopter, or potential volunteer to check them out! They are the best! Another thing that makes the SPCA stand out is the relationship between their Board of Directors with the shelter staff and animals. Their Board, unlike a lot of others, is personally involved with the animals. They know the animals and they spend time helping in the shelter for the benefit of the animals. Just a top notch group and an example of what every shelter SHOULD be.

I have adopted 3 puppies from the SPCA. The new SPCA is wonderful. The people are wonderful, helpful, kind, seem to really care about the animals. I have purchased many toys and other things for dogs in their store. Plus the out door run for the dogs is great. Great place to take your dog and let him or her run and play and you don't have to worry about them getting away. They have a wonderful training program also. I took my dog there and she learned so much, made her a much better furry person. Not every dog I have had has come from the SPCA but I would definitely get my best friend from there if possible. They also have all kinds of things you can do with your dog. The outlet store uptown Martinsville is a great place to shop for more than just puppy and cat things. Love the SPCA

My husband and I adopted a lovely 5 month old kitten, and later, an adult terrier-mix dog from the Martinsville - Henry County SPCA. They are treasured members of our family. We greatly appreciate the wonderful "meet and greet" experience with our new pets at the shelter. The staff couldn't be any nicer and both pets were healthy, fully vetted and ready to go home with us. We have recommended the shelter to others looking for a pet and, should we decide to adopt another ourselves, the Martinsville shelter is the first place we will look. Best wishes for the continued success of the M'ville - Henry Co. SPCA!! Sincerely, mgforce

I walked into the SPCA in 2009..........because friends told me I needed a new pet since mine had to be "put down" a few years before. I was not interested in the doggie they sent me to see, but fell in love with a little "ugly" poodle mix that was just sitting in the corner. I took her into the room to get acquainted....and immediately she jumped into my daughter's lap.........my daughter was in a wheel chair. I was in love! We went back the next day to see how she handled the walker.......and she had no problem and didn't even attempt to jump when the walker was used. Sandy (her new name) came home with us a few days later. We have now adopted both Sandy (poodle mix) and Bella (chihuahua mix). They are wonderful and bring lots of joy to my daughter and myself. I also have taken in 2 "barn cats"........so there is never a dull moment. I also met some of the most amazing people...........who have taken me in not caring about drama that happens to be in my life at this time. The other volunteers there know us...........and are used to dealing with getting around my daughter's wheelchair. It amazes me how the volunteers & employees go above and beyond what is expected in caring for the animals.

My dogs and cats have changed my life dramically. Not only are perfect strangers cleaning dog/cat hair off my sunday go to church clothes, I've met the most interesting people through my pets. All kidding aside, without my pets my life would be way to quiet, way to clean and my heart would be half empty. I wake up everyday with a purpose, companionship and unconditional love. What else could I want? I have learned some much about pet health, care and behavior through my SPCA and I am so grateful our community has such outstanding humane services.

My husband helped the Martinsville-Henry County SPCA build their new shelter a few years ago. This is a wonderful facility fully equipped to house the animals, keep them clean and healthy, and show them to potential adopters in comfort and style. The staff are courteous and friendly and do an excellent job of taking care of the animals and keeping the shelter clean. The executive director is dedicated, enthusiastic about the organization and has worked non-stop to raise money to keep the shelter running. When I needed a new home for one of my dogs who needed more space than I could give him, she worked really hard to place him in just the right home (he went to live on a horse farm). The board members also work hard and spend a lot of time volunteering at the shelter and raising money.

I visit the SPCA many Saturdays to "walk a hound, shed a pound". I don't shed a pound but I do enjoy walking the dogs. Everyone at the SPCA is so friendly and seem to really love the animals they take care of. It always makes me happy when one finds a forever home. Thanks to them for their dedication.

The Martinsville Henry County SPCA is filled with people who work hard, and love animals. Whenever, I drop in there are always people willing to stop what they are doing to introduce me to their current residents. It is obvious that the animals are well cared for, as evidenced by the dogs that have joined my family. This organization has the additional difficulty of being located in an area of very high unemployment. This means that they have a higher rate of homeless animals than other areas, and this has been the case for a very long time. The personnel simply forge ahead, doing whatever is necessary to take care of these wonderful creatures who can't care for themselves.

The Martinsville/Henry County SPCA is one of the crown jewels of our community. As a client and a donor, I feel that the care and protection they give to our orphaned animals is the best that animal will get anywhere in the United States. The facility is beautiful, and the staff and volunteers are the most caring people an abandoned pet could ask for. Incidentally, this review has been read and approved by "Charley", our four year old greyhound/lab mix and a grateful graduate of the Martinsville/Henry County SPCA adoption program.
