Mission: The Society for American Baseball Research SABR) was formed in August 1971 in Cooperstown, New York. It now consists of more than 6,500 members -- including many prominent writers, officials, and players -- worldwide.
The purpose of SABR is to foster theresearch, preservation, and dissemination of the history and record ofbaseball. SABR carries out that mission through programs:
1) To encourage the study of baseball, past and present, as a significant athletic and social institution;
2) To encourage further research and literary efforts to establish and maintain the accurate historical record of baseball;
3) To encourage the preservation of baseball research materials; and
4) To help disseminate educational, historical and research information about baseball.
Programs: SABR has 20+ research committees, each dedicated to studying a different part of the National Pastime. Members are encouraged to participate in any of the committees: Ballparks Committee, Baseball & the Arts Committee, Baseball Records Committee, Bibliography Committee, Biographical Research Committee, Biography Project, Business of Baseball Committee, Collegiate Committee, Latino Baseball Committee, Minor League Committee, Negro Leagues Committee, Nineteenth Century Committee, Oral History Committee, Pictorial History Committee, Scouts Committee, Statistical Analysis,Umpire and Rules Committee, Women In Baseball Committee.
Counting the initial meeting in Cooperstown in August 1971, SABR has staged an annual Convention each summer, featuring a variety of research presentations and exciting guests.
