Mission: Our Vision - To create a nurturing community that encourages integrity, values, responsibility and a love of learning. Our Mission - To develop Good Neighbor skills and values in children through programs that nourish, educate and support them while providing life-changing experiences for college students through leadership development internships.
Direct beneficiaries per year: Last year, we directly helped approximately 400 students through all the SML Good Neighbor Programs
Geographic areas served: We work with children in both Bedford and Franklin Counties in the state of Virginia.
Programs: We provide lunches for summer school students in three Bedford County elementary schools. We provide backpacks containing food for the weekend and a new book each Friday of summer school for children in three Bedford County and three Franklin County schools. We provide a four-week summer enrichment day camp for children in three Bedford County and three Franklin County schools. The children are from families with limited resources. We focus on reading, writing and communication skills. Enrichment activities are provided every afternoon in Nature Education, Peace Education and Cultural Diversity. We provide opportunities for leadership training and vocational exploration for carefully selected college interns. We provide volunteers for an in-school mentoring program in two elementary schools. We work with the Roanoke Children's Theater to being a S.E.A. ( Student Enrichment of the Arts ) program to the elementary schools in both Bedford and Franklin County Virginia. We launched SML GN Middle School Academy in 2016. This program serves 6th grade students to rising 9th grade students with a 4 week summer enrichment program for both Bedford and Franklin Counties. SML GN Middle School Academy also is active as an after-school program for both Bedford and Franklin County students. We organize community resources to address the needs of children.
