Skenes Chapel Holiness Church, better known as the little "humble church on the hill", was organized in 1913, by Evangelist A J Lewis of Danville, VA. She was one of the first ordained women ministers in North Carolina. As the word of God was preached, calling the people's attention to holiness according to Hebrew 12:14: 'Follow peace with all men and holiness without which no man shall see the Lord'. Evangelist Lewis set up this church in the most undesirable and fearful community in Greensboro, NC called 'the bull pen'. As she spread the word and held services there, a policeman, Captain Bob Skenes, protected her and the members of this church. God proved her ministry to be real, by cleaning up that area so that people could walk through it without fear. After redevelopment forced the church to move in 1950, Mr Perry J Brown opened his funeral home to the church to hold service therein. In 1958, Skenes Chapel Holiness Church moved to their present location, which was the first Quaker Church biult in Greensboro (at that time). There have been three pastors to succeed Bishop A J Lewis-Richmond: Bishop Robert Leon Lewis (her son), Elder Bernice W Shoffner, and our present pastor: Bishop Lawrence S. Tate. Skenes Chapel's membership has always been small, however it's hard working members say they have sincere faith in God, believing that all things are possible to those who believe.
