The core story of this museum is a very important and valuable matter of history to Greensboro, NC and to the Civil Rights movement as a whole. The museum is extremely well done and tells the core story well but also puts it in the context of the larger movement and larger cultural circumstances in a very rich, multi-layered and powerful way. That said, the museum experience isn't heavy handed and doesn't tell the visitor how to think or what to think, it simply tells the facts and describes the context of the facts and asks the visitor to come to their own terms with it. I think it's fair to say that visitors are left with the question naturally in their minds, "where do I go with this, what do I go do, as work for equal civil rights for all is ongoing. Again, the museum is exceptionally well done and should be an agenda item for every resident of Greensboro, everyone within driving distance of Greensboro, and every visitor. It is also absolutely field trip worthy for any middle or high school interested in being honest with history. It might be helpful to some to know that I am a white male in his 60's.
What and amazing place to visit! I have had occasion to visit the Museum many times over the last 10 years and each time I take the dynamic tour, I am just proud of the way that the staff bring the exhibits to life. I have been on Tour with Bamidele, Amelia, Jeanne, Cassandra, LT, Brandon, Dillon and Sage and they are just exceptional presenters with impeccable knowledge of the movement.
During my last visit, I was able to speak with the CEO and he informed me that the Museum had paid off the outstanding obligation on the building; something north of $35.6M dollars. My hat is off to the residents of Greensboro for seeing to the well-being of this community Asset. It is truly a jewel. Mr. Swaine also informed me that it was Ms. Parker and Mr. Demerson who were the actual curators of the exhibits and the renovations. I admire his willingness to provide such information. I will definitely return and bring all of my out of town guest to the International Civil Rights Center & Museum. Ps. This is the cleanest building that I have ever seen, for a place with so much traffic.
