Mission: Preserve nordic skiing opportunities
Programs: The mt. Shasta nordic ski organization is an economically-viable, community-based non-profit organization established in 2006. Our mission is to support community health and wellbeing by providing groomed crosscountry trails and programs for a diverse population on the slopes of mt. Shasta. The mt. Shasta nordic ski organization operates the mt. Shasta nordic center, a cross-country ski facility with 20km of well groomed ski trai ls, 8km of packed snowshoe trails, a warming hut, ski instruciton, and equipment rentals. The trails and facilities are public access and low cost, ensuring opportunities for all skiers. The trail maintenance and grooming operations are managed utilizing nordic center equipment and staff. Additional operation support is donated by the mt. Shasta ski park, a long-standing partner in the community and supporter of mt. Shasta nordic center. The mt. Shasta nordic center serves a community of skiers that represents a large geographic area. The nearest comparable cross-country ski facility is over 200 miles away. The duration of the ski season is approximately 15 weeks, beginning near the end of december. Throughout the season, the nordic center hosts approximately 5000 visitors of all ages, skill levels, alter-abilities, and incomes. Mt. Shasta nordic promotes nordic skiing as an environmentally-friendly activity, beneficial to mental and physical health. We facilitate a variety of health, youth, competitive, and educational ski programs and events. The mt. Shasta nordic center hosts a number of community and student groups, including shasta disabled sports, veterans, seniors, and over 700 participants from siskiyou county and southern oregon schools. The mt. Shasta nordic center hosts several competitive and social events throughout the winter season, the details of which can be found at our website: www. Mtshastanordic. Org. Mt. Shasta nordic is supported annually by individual and business donors. Additionally, the community contributes over 1000 volunteer hours to ensure the viability of the organization. In-kind donations are a key part of the success of mt. Shasta nordic and the continued operations of the nordic center, the total value of in-kind donations made exceeds $25,000. The organization hosts many fundraising events throughout the year. The largest of these is the annual wine & dine gala held in february. Mt. Shasta nordic also hosts an annual screening of the backcountry film festival; the screening is held mid-winter and is an important fundraising event. Many of the programs of mt. Shasta nordic are also supported in part by grants. Mt. Shasta nordic is governed by a volunteer board of directors. Key staff include an executive director and seasonal staff who manage operation of the nordic center. Mt. Shasta nordic represents and responds to the wishes of our membership and needs of our community with consideration for environmental responsibility, fiscal prudence, and operational sustainability. We were open for 67 days from december 17, 2016 to march 31, 2017, open 7 days a week over the holidays, closed mondays (excluding holidays), tuesdays and wednesdays. Trail use feemt. Shasta nordic is planning for the long-term financial security of the organization, and one of our financial goals is to create a reserve fund to help cover operational expenses in the event of a low snow year. It is also imperative that a capital replacement fund be established to cover the costs of repairs, maintenance and eventual replacement of our groomer, yurt and snowmobile. We successfully implemented the new model, integrated trail fee/membership structure with a daily trail use fee and an annual season pass/membership option that provides unlimited access. We offer different tiers of membership, as well as scholarships so that no one will be denied access to the nordic center due to financial circumstances. As always, nordic will continue to provide community events and programs such as free days for shasta disabled sports, seniors & veterans ski & snowshoe days, and our popular junior skate and school programs. Mt. Shasta nordic will maintain its non-profit status and continue to maximize its current revenue streams.
