I've worked with various non-profits over the last decade, as both a volunteer, employee, and donor. Never have I been so struck by the absolute selflessness, passion, and sheer commitment to a community that Sink or Swim Philadelphia exemplifies. It is heartbreaking to think of those in my immediate community who struggle not only with their health, but live in constant stress trying to make ends meet. SOS fills a much needed role to alleviate this stress by raising money to help uninsured or underinsured individuals in our community whose health has taken a turn for the worse. When I donate to SOS, I KNOW that my individual donation makes a direct impact. This empowerment - the ability to be an agent of change through SOS - along with the very real impact SOS makes on very real members of our community, makes them a non-profit I support, believe in, and am inspired by. I encourage everyone to become a part of SOS in whatever capacity they can.
I first became aware of Sink or Swim Philadelphia when they won the PhillySTAKE grant, and were reporting on their accomplishments. The professionalism of the SOS team coupled with their unique understanding of the benefits and strengths of social media combine to create an organization that is responsive AND responsible. I feel great knowing EXACTLY where my donation is going each month (Ava!) and look forward to donating again.
I had never heard of this group until recently when I made a small donation for Ava. I do not know Ava personally but I had the pleasure of meeting her grandmother at an APLB conference in May which is when I learned of her accident. I was concerned and confused in making sure the donation was used for Ava. I sent several emails to try to confirm this and every one of them was answered kindly with addressing all of my concerns. I am very happy to know of this wonderful organization.
Sink or Swim Philadelphia raises money for people in the Philadelphia area who are un- or under-insured and have an immediate medical need. Focusing on one recipient a month, SoS shares the stories of ordinary people facing extraordinary challenges, and uses social media to call attention (and assistance). As a donor, it is particularly satisfying to be helping a particular person each month, rather than making a broad donation.
