Causes: Community Improvement & Capacity Building, Environment, Job Training
Mission: Pioneering innovative approaches and solutions to foster community vitality, environmental quality, economic prosperity, and social fairness in the Sierra Nevada.
Target demographics: Advance a sustainable economy that improves the environment and provides economic opportunity for all.
Geographic areas served: The Sierra Nevada mountain range in California and Nevada
Programs: Sierra Business Council works in three inter-related areas: Business Innovation, Climate and Energy, and Public Policy Advocacy. Through our Business Innovation program, SBC manages the Sierra Small Business Development Center for northeastern California; we run a consortium of community groups and local governments seeking to expand high-speed broadband; manage a community capital fund; and work to expand access to affordable housing. Through our Climate and Energy program, we manage a local government partnership aimed at increasing energy efficiency and access to renewables, expand biomass utilization and develop and finance energy projects. We also work on climate adaptation issues, including reducing the threat and risk of wildfire through ecological restoration and readying Sierra communities for the impacts of climate change. Through our Public Policy Advocacy program, we advocate for increased investment in natural resource restoration, economic development, climate adaptation and community improvement in the rgeion.
