This is such an important organization, especially right now when women have been actively engaged in and fighting for policies that effect them. Using Shirley Chisholm‘s legacy as a trailblazer, activist , politician and a woman of color- the organization centers the voices of women and men from all walks of life and encourages them to see the impact of her legacy from the arts to education. So inspiring!
The institute stands as a powerful testament to the enduring legacy of Shirley Chisholm. This remarkable organization is dedicate to carrying forward Chisholm's unwavering commitment to social justice, equality and empowering marginalized voices.
The Shirley Chisholm Cultural Institute (SCCI) is a beacon of hope due to the efforts of President/CEO Barbara Bullard and the entire organization. As an artist who has created permanent and historic installations on the legacy of Congresswoman Chisholm, it's wonderful to witness her legacy being shared with the world with such dedication and inspiring programming.
During and in the wake of the 2016 presidential elections, I continually found inspiration in Congress Member Chisholm's words, "You don't make progress by standing on the sidelines, whimpering and complaining. You make progress by implementing ideas."
When I learned last year that the SCCI existed and was looking for help to sustainably reposition the organization for the 21st century, I jumped in to offer a few pro bono hours/month for 2-3 months. The more I learned and helped, the longer I "hung around." So, 18+months and many hours later, I am thrilled to still be actively engaged and honored to serve as an Advisor to SCCI to help advance its mission and increase support for its work and robust vision for the future.
SCCI isn't statically honoring Ms. Chisholm's legacy and her words, but rather it actively finds concrete, creative, relevant, and contemporary ways to engage, educate, and empower all people, but especially young women and communities of color. SCCI's dynamic leader, Brooklyn-native Barbara Bullard, IS the driving force behind SCCI's vision, success, and partnerships across the city and the globe! She is a pleasure to work with and support. For too long, SCCI has been operating on a shoestring budget and I hope everyone reading this will take time to learn about SCCI and generously support its work. And spread the word of their good work!
Finally, I have long been inspired by Shirley Chisholm. As a native NYer, I have very early memories sitting on my grandpa's shoulders in local parks so I would not just hear her powerful voice, but see for myself that women and people of all races, religions, etc have a right and need to have a "seat at the table." I am delighted to find even a small way to help honor and keep her legacy alive.
I have seen first hand the impact that the SCCI has made on the community at large. I love how the Institute collaborates with individuals from all walks of life (whether they be prominent and influential members of society or recent student graduates) to incentivize and motivate action that will bring about positive life changes for our younger generation. Keeping Chisholm's legacy alive is a daunting task, but the SCCI, under the unwavering leadership of Barbara Bullard, continues to push through, finding new and innovative ways to make her light shine. Shirley Chisholm's legacy lives through the work of the SCCI, and I'm blessed and so grateful to be a part of it.
What better way to honor the legacy of a global icon than to be part of the Shirley Chisholm Cultural Institute?! I love being a bridge between the past and the future by following the blueprint created and implemented by Cong. Shirley Chisholm. SCCI applies her ideas and ideals to today's issues. SCCI is poised to increase exponentially its global impact. I want to be part of this!
What a powerful combination! The Shirley Chisholm Cultural Institute serving the legacy of an amazing woman and Barbara Bullard, an astonishingly visionary leader with innovation and creativity to take the Institute forwards. Barbara's determination alongside her clear moral purpose is inspiring!
Our charity, based in Liverpool UK, is thrilled to be working alongside Barbara and her team to promote identity, belonging and social justice across countries.
