Mission: Shine is a NYC-based nonprofit on a mission to empower homeless survivors of domestic violence through financial literacy. 88% of survivors return to their abusers, mostly due to financial pressure, and we are here to change that. Working in emergency shelters, we provide free financial education to address the day-to-day needs of survivors. Our tips and tools help survivors build credit, create savings, and search for employment so they can get back on their feet and leave the abuse for good.
Results: -Assisted 600 survivors cumulatively in 5 years, without any paid staff, build the skills to boost their credit scores, create savings and search for employment.
-75% of survivors report feeling more prepared to take action to improve their financial situations after taking our classes.
-More than 50% take steps to improve their financial situations before the end of our programs.
-More than 60% of survivors feel more control over their finances after taking our classes.

Shine helps survivors of domestic violence get back on their feet through financial literacy classes. The staff and leadership are dedicated, warm, and fun!!!
Shine is an incredible organization that tackles difficult financial information in a fun, informative way. They bring a lightness to an otherwise difficult time. I've been a volunteer for the past year and a half, and have nothing but respect for all of the wonderful clients we work with, as well as my fellow volunteers.
I have worked with the Shine Foundation for about one year. They provide services to residents in a Domestic Violence shelter for people with disabilities. They have been very compassionate and flexible regarding the unique needs our residents face. In addition, they are receptive to working with people who have various income, education, and language abilities.
I have been thoroughly impressed by all the volunteers at Shine. Their commitment and passion to helping abuse survivors improve their financial health are infectious.
I've volunteered for few events for Shine and every one of them were much more rewarding to me then what I was able to give in return. I was able to talk to other volunteers and to those we were helping. This organization has a strong cause and purpose. One thing that I found that makes Shine so approachable is how little "red tape" there is. And this makes it even more efficient and useful to those who are in need of Shine's services.
I've been volunteering with Shine on their team and everyone there is so passionate about about the cause. Its a great non profit to work with. They are dedicated to get the results and make a difference in society.
1. Passionate, hard-working, and empathetic staff 2. Well-organized, creative, and constantly evolving curriculum that is both informative and engaging
I have worked with Shine in the past and they are a wonderful organization! They are focusing on a specific but very important topic. The group is made up of hard working and creative people.
This is a wonderful effort that targets to empower abused women to get financially fit. Programs are targeted to the unique needs of the groups involved and the volunteers are very carefully selected for appropriate background and experience as well as attitude to relate to people they meant to help.
Worked with Shine several times. The team is passionate about their mission of teaching financial literacy to survivors. Well organized and no big egos - just want results!
