I have had the opportunity to volunteer with Shield Bearer for nearly 2 years. I love the way the support community and how they love every person who crosses their path. This organization is the true definition of what a non-profit organization should be with the love and ministry they give to others!
Shield Bearer is a great place to get the help from top counselors that you need to deal with what life throws at you. My son, Roy Wooten does not lead anyone astray. He can see in just a few minutes what you need to get you on your way to a better life. Only God knows all the good this non profit does for the Greater Houston Area.
I volunteer at Shield Bearer because their staff and volunteers "Walk their Talk!" My interactions with this caring and giving staff far exceed expectations. Their counseling services and programs truly serve the hearts of struggling individuals and families with much compassion and caring. 1 John 3:18 reads: "Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth." (NIV) Serving as a volunteer I have personally seen how the organization has been and continues to be obedient to God's word. I find myself constantly encouraging hurting people, and others, who are looking for somewhere to volunteer their services, to contact Shield Bearer. Shield Bearer is certainly a Great Nonprofit organization.
I have never worked in a place where everyone is a Christian before and where waht we do is so so important to our clients. Everyone here is really really great at counseling. I don't counsel but in my job I get to meet some clients and I get to see the counselors concerns and love for helping them. I thank God that i get to work here.
Shield Bearer is a blast to volunteer with. Melissa Rotholz and the rest of the team there make volunteering easy and fun. At the 5K, I met a few of the people they help and was so impressed with what Shield Bearer is doing to help them after the horrible things that happened to them. I recommend this nonprofit to volunteer for every chance you get.
I am a case manager at a local non-profit in Houston which serves survivors of human trafficking. Shield Bearer has been providing counseling to our clients for about a year and we've heard nothing but positive feedback from all of our clients. The counselors at Shield Bearer are trauma-informed and give each client the respect and dignity they deserve. Our clients have voiced how "relaxing" counseling is and how they appreciated being able to "get stuff off my chest." We will continue to utilize Shield Bearer in the future because of how much they care.
I have been blessed to be part of the Shield Bearer team for over 5 years now and am still impressed with staff and volunteers belief in the mission and desire to provide counseling services to those in need. Keep up the good work!
I am so thankful for the incredibly gifted people God has assembled to serve in this vitally important nonprofit in North, West and Northwest Houston areas. It is an awesome organization that does what it says it does. I refer frequently.
Shield Bearer is the only agency that I know of that provides high-quality, skilled counseling and support to the Houston community without regard to ability to pay. They never want finances to be a reason someone doesn't get the help they need, and they will work with you to find a rate that is affordable for you. The counselors are highly trained, warm and caring, and able to address a wide-range of issues. Shield Bearer is a blessing throughout NW Houston with several locations: Main Office on Jones Road (77070), and satellite offices in West Houston (Barker-Cypress/West Little York), Tomball, Conroe , and Cypress Station (1960 and I-45).
I have been involved with Shield Bearer for 3 year now. The programs they provide for the community are in desperate need by many. I personally have benefited from the Mother Daughter Strong Program which has strengthened my relationship with my teen and giver my teen valuable information as she navigates these precious years. I am also a supporter of their Celebration of Hope Awards Dinner. Whether you are are in need of services or looking for a non-profit doing amazing works, Shield Bearer is here for you!
"The goal at Shield Bearer is to say "YES!" to anyone who needs our help."- Executive Director, Roy Wooten.
At Shield Bearer, I have worked as a donor, volunteer, and more recently, as a counselor in their offices. I have been a part of the Shield Bearer family for many years. When I met Roy, their executive director, I was invited to meet other staff, clients, and to attend fundraising events. Every person I met who was associated with Shield Bearer- Board, staff or client- was an inspiration. After going back to graduate school, I am now a licensed counselor and work for Shield Bearer. After working on the inside with staff and my fellow counselors, I can truly say that there is no finer organization of people who want to help others. And who make a real difference every day in our part of the world.
I have worked for, or volunteered for, non-profits for 35 years. Currently I am affiliated with three non-profits, one being Shield Bearer Counseling Centers. SBCC is an outstanding organization providing much needed services for individuals, couples and families. The environment at SBCC is professional and friendly. Any investment of time or finances by anyone provides a priceless return.
I am a counselor at Shield Bearer and have seen clients from all walks of life. I love working with a group of people who really care about the hearts of others and are dedicated to helping those who are hurting.
I choose to spend my time and efforts with this organization because I believe in their mission, and have seen first hand the dedication of their staff and volunteers. They make a real difference in the lives of people in our community.
I am honored to work for an organization that not only believes “strong communities are built by healthy families” yet understands that “healthy families have their strongest link in the marriage relationship.”
Shield Bearer continuously strives to heal “hurting hearts,” with a unique relationship-centered philosophy which has resulted in discernible, positive change with couples/marriages that expands outward in the family. There is a newfound family wholeness, and this felt sense then expands outward from the family into the community, in that the family takes an active interest with getting involved in philanthropic services.
With an understanding that strengthening marriages becomes an agent for positive change within the family unit, combined with an in-depth knowledge in evidence-based therapy models, such as Emotionally Focused Therapy and The Gottman Method, Shield Bearer’s counseling team has been able to improve and even “save” relationships from trajectories toward marital dissolution.
As a relationship therapist at Shield Bearer, I have seen that when couples learn how to heal from emotional wounds, nourish their love and honor one another’s dreams, they are better able to cultivate a culture of we-ness and experience a satisfying relationship. In turn, couples have a greater capacity to be conscious parents, to stay aware of their own past conditioning that keeps getting triggered. From both their individual and interpersonal growth, couples begin understanding how to better connect with their children and tune into their feelings, for example. Even more, as couples are learning how to accept their own uncomfortable feelings (e.g., feeling helpless or hurt)--which is a prerequisite in being able to respond to situations instead of becoming triggered and reactive—they then know better how to help their children sit with uncomfortable emotions and respond from an as is place.
Since the initial launch in 2005, Shield Bearer has remained true to their mission and overarching desire to help couples and families in a myriad of ways, such as offering marriage workshops, seminars, marriage intensives, couples and family counseling. In addition, the executive leader of the organization, Roy Wooten, has been working with his wife, Devra, for over 20 years, helping couples restore their love; and they have distilled the knowledge and insight gained from their professional avalanche experience into their book The Secret to Lifetime Love.
At Shield Bearer, our counseling staff shares a passion and enthusiasm for repairing marriages and relationships; we believe in cultivating a culture of togetherness—the same recipe for healthy relationships— and that parlays into a team of knowledgeable, empathic and skilled therapists.
I have worked in the field of mental health for over 40 years, and have been at Shield Bearer for a little over 1 year. I am in awe everyday at the number of calls that come into Shield Bearer, requesting help!! The range of requests are coming from people with zero income to those who have no problem paying the maximum fee. Shield Bearer will not turn clients away due to their inability to pay. That to me is incredible in itself. Professional counseling is provided consistently in a safe, non-threatening, environment.
It has been a blessing to work with such dedicated and caring staff that provide quality counseling services to those in need. Shield Bearer is always looking for ways to meet the needs of those most in need and that is the type of organization that I am proud to be a part of.
I'm a minister at a church. Constantly, we have members and visitors that need faith-based counseling. We at our church handle some of the issues. However, some of it is behind our expertise. The ONLY counseling center I refer people at our church to is Shield Bearer. They make it low cost and offer faith-based counseling upon request. They treat every client like they are the only one on earth. Everyone is special that walks through the doors and it's a very family feel of an environment. I fully recommend this non-profit counseling center!
Shield Bearer Counseling provides a very warm nurturing environment which allows clients the opportunity to overcome life's challenges. I love having a job that doesn't feel like a job but more of a calling in my life. I started working at Shield Bearer Counseling a little over 3 years ago, and I have noticed one thing that always remains a constant is their ability to always go above and beyond to ensure clients receive necessary counseling services despite their inability to pay. The Shield Bearer Counseling team is made up of experienced professionals with a wide variety of specialities and clinical knowledge. Thank you Shield Bearer for helping me grow professionally over the years!
