Mission: SIPAZ (Servicio Internacional para la Paz) is an international observation and accompaniment program. It began in 1995 as a response to a petition sent by Mexican human rights organizations and religious leaders to the international community. This petition was for a permanent international presence in Chiapas that could help to monitor the situation and assist in reducing the violence that followed the Zapatista uprising in 1994. A number of civil organizations and religious groups then joined together to form SIPAZ to respond to this request. Today SIPAZ continues this mission using its international presence and observation to assist in preventing or reducing the violence, increasing awareness and visibility of the peace. It is now also increasingly monitoring and informing about the conflicts in Guerrero and Oaxaca both to provide accompaniment to those affected by the situations in these states as well as to assist in making more visible the connections between the conflicts in distinct parts of Mexico.
