Mission: To provide opportunities to low-income persons of ages 55 years and over located in northern nevada and northeastern california through the foster grandparent and senior companion programs.
Programs: The foster grandparent program provides opportunities for low income persons ages 55 years and over to offer supportive services, such as tutoring and mentoring to children and families with special needs and at- risk youth. 112 foster grandparent volunteers are represented at 43 different sites in northern nevada and are under supervision of teachers and counselors.
the senior companion program matches older volunteers as companions to frail, elderly individuals who might otherwise be forced into nursing homes or hospitals. Companions provide a variety of assistance, such as medical transportation, meal preparation, light housekeeping duties, etc. 59 senior companion volunteers committed to a minimum of 15 hours per week, 34% contribute 30-40 hours per week.
