The non-profit world is tricky, and trying to be a successful non-profit, that holds true to its mission and values, and having real impact, feels impossible. But witnessing SEJA's work gives me a lot of hope for what a successful model for a non-profit could be. SEJA's work revolves around focusing on generating real bottom-up change, that reducing systemic inequalities comes from redistributing resources, empowering local leaders, and lifting up local culture.
I worked with SEJA in both strategic planning, and have witnessed their events first-hand. I have never seen more of a united and inspired team, and everyone that SEJA touches leaves more empowered and inspired.
Dylan and George's leadership is one that seeks to empower, not just to direct. Their decision making is collective and gives voice to those that have the right context to both social problems and solutions in spaces they are working in.
They believe so strongly in the power of the local leader, and I am so excited to see the organization grow and thrive.
SEJA exemplifies a community-first approach, distinguishing itself by actively listening to the needs of the community before taking action. They lift-up local changemakers, individuals deeply integrated within their communities, to lead successful and sustainable initiatives. This method contrasts sharply with many third-sector organizations that often dictate terms to those they hire from within the community. SEJA reverses this dynamic, not only hiring individuals with lived experiences but also placing them in positions to guide the organization. The sector would greatly benefit from more organizations like SEJA, which genuinely prioritize local voices and insights in shaping their actions and strategies.
SEJA is not just about providing resources; it's about empowering grassroots changemakers to drive lasting change in their communities.
Seja’s unique story, amazing managers and teachers are what make this beautiful project so beautiful. They inspire the hearts of people all over the world with their hard work, dedication and impact in their communities of Rio de Janeiro
I have been following SEJA's work over the last 5 years. I am very proud to see the positive impact that SEJA has on the lives of young people and community leaders through its programs. SEJA Community Battle has become an event of great importance for the promation of break dance and hip hop culture in Brazil.
Being a part of SEJA has been an incredibly rewarding experience for me. The organization excels in fostering a sense of belonging and involvement in their work. The team is consistently accessible and supportive, making me feel valued and empowered to make a meaningful global impact.
I had the good fortune of coming across SEJA towards the beginning of their journey. I was immediately impressed by the vision of the organization and by the fact that the founders had their boots on the ground and were doing the work with their own hands. From the start, I knew exactly how my donations would be used - it was clear to me that my donations would be put to good use, and they have been. SEJA's growth is beyond what my optimism anticipated and the number of lives the organization has impacted in positive ways numbers well into the thousands. Each step along the way, there has been full transparency between the team at SEJA and myself as a donor. I feel part of something truly special. Knowing that my small contributions have helped SEJA develop to its current level is a priceless feeling. If you are a donor and you are in search of a trusted organization doing genuinely excellent work for people who need it, you've found it.
SEJA… a great organisation with an even more impressive aim. Empowerment for the Youth of Rio de Janeiro’s Impoverished communities.
SEJA are kicking goals no other organisation could imagine. Making huge increases in areas such as working with leaders in other cities, investing back into the community , the amazing fundraising achievements, hosting multiple cultural events around Brazil.
But most importantly I think, engaging with the youth of each community and giving them a chance to express and excel to reach their full potential in any chosen field they wish to pursue. This is what makes SEJA such a great organisation.
I have volunteered in many different countries around the world for multiple organisations.
But after researching and seeing how the leadership team at SEJA work together to achieve a common goal is most impressive. I believe teamwork makes the dream work and that starts at the top which has a ripple effect through the whole process.
The young men and women that SEJA works with have a Strong future ahead.
Sport is a great outlet for young people to channel their energy into something positive. Breakdance and the Hip Hop culture in general takes that one step further, giving youngsters a voice aswell a chance to express there own unique identities through breaking. SEJAs breakdance battle epitomizes this idea and to be to attend there events was a privilege and the talent was incredible.
I’ve been a donator to SEJA for the past 2 years, since I found about the work they are doing in the Favelas of Rio, empowering communities from within. On my last visit to Rio I had the opportunity to see first hand how the young people are reveling in the opportunities SEJA has provided for them and the pride that the young mentors take in their roles within the organization.
SEJA holds a special place in my heart, as it's been a beacon of hope and inspiration in my own journey within Rio de Janeiro's vibrant cultural scene. Through my experiences with SEJA, I've witnessed firsthand the incredible power of art to transform lives and communities for the better.
What sets SEJA apart is its deeply ingrained commitment to inclusivity and empowerment. From the bustling streets of underprivileged neighborhoods to the stages of cultural events celebrating diversity, SEJA's programs have touched the lives of individuals from all walks of life, including mine.
As someone who has benefited from SEJA's inclusive approach to programming, I can attest to the organization's transformative impact. Whether through providing opportunities for emerging artists like myself to showcase our talents or through initiatives that address pressing social issues, SEJA has been a driving force for positive change in my life and the lives of countless others.
But SEJA is more than just an NGO – it's a community of passionate individuals dedicated to making a difference. Through collaborative partnerships and grassroots efforts, SEJA has created a network of support that extends far beyond the confines of its programs, fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment among its participants.
What truly sets SEJA apart is its long-term vision for sustainability and lasting impact. By investing in the development of resilient communities and empowering individuals to become changemakers in their own right, SEJA is paving the way for a brighter future for Rio de Janeiro and beyond.
In conclusion, my journey with SEJA has been nothing short of transformative. Through its unwavering commitment to creativity, inclusivity, and social change, SEJA has not only inspired me to pursue my artistic passions but has also instilled in me a sense of hope and optimism for the future.
