I have enjoyed volunteering at Second Helpings for almost 3 years. The multifaceted mission is something you can’t help being proud to be a part of. Not only does Second Helpings help feed many of the food insecure population of Indy, but it also reduces food waste locally, educates individuals who need a new career base with valuable food preparation skills, and runs a well organized system with volunteers like me who have found something of value and really fun to do in their spare time or retirement. I look forward to every shift I spend there, and have made some interesting friends from all walks of life I may have never met otherwise! Love that place.
Great organization in all respects! The mission is all about food: rescue food from groceries and restaurants, prepare meals from this food for those who would otherwise go hungry, and train down-on-their-luck individuals to cook so as to prepare them for jobs. The guinea pigs for the cooks-in-training are the volunteers who get a free lunch. 2nd Helpings is extremely well run with a small permanent staff supporting around 800 volunteers. The volunteers pick up the food, organize it, prep it, cook it, package it and deliver it to the community organizations who serve the hot meals. Thousands are served every week!
Second Helpings serving a huge need via a far-sighted mission through dedicated volunteers.
