Causes: Food, Food Banks & Pantries
Mission: Our mission is to ensure food is available to the hungry in our community.
Results: Since opening our doors in 1981, we have distributed a cumulative total of over 300 million pounds of food and other grocery products to hungry families in West Michigan. In 2009, we started doing business as "Feeding America West Michigan Food Bank." That year, we distributed a record 24.5 million pounds - and because of our constant focus on efficiency, the net cost to the community was only 17 cents per pound.
Direct beneficiaries per year: 100,000 hungry West Michigan families
Programs: Feeding America West Michigan Food Bank addresses hunger by addressing food waste, saving good food from senseless destruction so that hungry people might have food to eat. The Food Bank receives surplus or damaged food items as donations or purchases it from wholesale farmers or food processors, which is then distributed to other nonprofits where it reaches people in need.
