Two years ago I had to make the decision to put down my childhood cat of 20 years. A few months ago I started thinking about getting another cat, but I wasn't sure if I was ready yet. So I decided I'd give fostering a go. It didn't take long for Cherish, who I quickly renamed Churro, to weasel her way into my heart. After a few weeks with her, I knew I was going to be a foster fail and I eventually adopted her. I'll be forever grateful for Second Chance for helping me find my favorite adventure buddy.
We have adopted both our dogs and two bonded pairs of kittens from Second Chance. Our pets are the light of our lives and none of it would have been possible without Second Chance. They are the best!
I have personally gone to Second Chance Animal Services for numerous years for varying reasons. I’ve utilized their various vaccine clinics, their spay and neuter services, veterinary clinic services and will foster/adopt from them in the future when the time comes for another companion. The organization itself does more for the communities around them than any other in the areas. There are so many people and animals they are assisting. The low cost services they provide to those in need is incredible. Anytime I hear someone mention needing pet care or looking to adopt we recommend Second Chance Animal Services. Thank you for everything you do!
As an Operating Room Tech in High School and then a Psychiatric Registered Nurse, I spent my life caring for people at inpatient state hospitals. I always loved working with people and enjoyed meeting so many different people in times of crisis and seeing them on to their better times. When it came time to retire and having moved to Central Massachusetts from the North Shore, I had a few family members in the area but no friends. I needed to find something different to occupy my time. As a cat lover I figured I would start volunteering at an animal shelter. I did some research and found that Second Chance Animal Shelter had the best reviews. Fourteen years ago, I began volunteering at the shelter in East Brookfield, Massachusetts caring for the cats and helping with the paperwork for adoptions and adoption follow ups. Shortly afterward the Second Chance Veterinary clinic opened in North Brookfield, and they asked if I would assist at the weekly Rabies clinics. I did and that expanded to clinics in communities where animals got injections for $12 making it possible for people to afford to keep their pets. This also included clinics at low-income housing and elderly housing where care was provided for free. My role was to interact with owners as I checked in animals who were then taken into the treatment room by staff. Along the way I made lots of friends (a lot of crazy Cat ladies like me) which has meant so much to me. What I realized after a while and I hold onto dearly now, is that I am still helping people, lots of people. This is thanks to Second Chance now called Second Chance Animal Services because it is way more than a shelter for everyone and way more than something to occupy my time for me.

The most important thing to understand about Second Chance is that is a no kill shelter. When I researched a charity to volunteer at I looked for an established shelter whose mission was to actually save animals not just advertise that they do and allow the "unadoptable" to be (as they say on TV) humanely euthanized. The vast majority of the people who turn to Second Chance are understanding of a process that checks references and with potential adopter's Vets to ensure that their already owned pets are up to date on rabies vaccine and spayed or neutered. This is a process to maximize the plan that the animals are going to a forever home that already values and appropriately cares for their animals. There are however a few people who become irritated with process and strike out at things they do not understand. Animals come in sometimes in the most deplorable conditions that cannot be cleared overnight. It took one dog months to put on the 50 pounds he had lost along with his body hair due to severe neglect. Not only was this dog, who had been dumped at the shelter given vet care, food and grooming, he was given love and held on to until he was ready to be adopted. This process was very expensive but Second Chance never wavered in their mission to get him to the home he now has. I get to see the level of caring by the staff and volunteers. At times they have to deal with people who show up and demand to be able to take a cat or dog right then. They are unwilling to wait for the spay/neuter, vaccines, vet checks and grooming if necessary that the shelter insists be done before an animal can be adopted. I have heard staff called uncaring and rude when it was the complainer who was being rude in their demand to not be held to the standards needed to approve an adopttion. Second Chance is a place where the mission is carried out as it is stated. No Kill, adopt, vaccinate, spay/neuter and love animals. One look at the happy endings page should be testimony that the misson is realized.
it started about thirty yeas ago. I had recently moved the the area and was scanning the local newspaper when I saw this shelter asking for a donation. They had recued a dog that needed surgery and was asking for help to cover the cost. To make a long story short, I had a check to one of the employees and turned to walk out. I got as far as the front door and I see this beautiful Siamese cat in a cage. She became my first Second Chance adoptee. I think several years went by and again I read where they have just opened a clinic right up the street from me. My Niece was visiting me at the time so we went up there to check it out. At that time it was one huge room split down the middle. Their main goal was to do as many spay/neuters as possible to keep the stray population down along with low cost vaccinations. Their door was and still is open to volunteers. I knew I couldn't volunteer at the shelter which was a different location because was at a different location as I would want to adopt every animal there. However the clinic would be safe as these animals already belonged to someone. So after going through a painless introduction I became a volunteer. On my first day I met two women that basically ran the clinic ,Wendy and Michelle. These two made me feel like the main reason they came to work that day was in hopes I'd be there! Each person I met after that was the same.. So, as I began, this was thirty years ago and sadly I cannot do as much as I'd like but take it from me you will never find a group of people with more compassion and love for the animals they treat or the volunteers that help make this all possible!

Shortly after I moved to N. Brookfield, I read an article in the news paper about a shelter near by that had rescued a dog and needed just a little more donation to complete the surgery it needed before it could be put up for adoption. I folded the paper, slipped on my shoes and headed to Second Chance with a check in hand. Not having adopted a rescue in a long long time, I was surprised to see quite a number of people there looking for a furry companion. As I waited to get someone's attention, I walked around scoping the place out. I was not there to adopt as I already had my own furry babies at home and did not see any one I wanted to add to my family. My presence was finally acknowledged by a staff member and I handed her the check, exchanged a few words and was headed out the door when I spotted a one year old female Siamese cat in a cage tucked in a corner. As I stopped in my tracks and my eyes widened the staffer told me that the cat had only arrived about fifteen minutes before I got there. So you can probably guess the rest of the story. Yup, home she came with me and was renamed "Kismet". She remained part of my family for seventeen years before she was cancer stricken and had to be put down. Within those seventeen years I have adopted another Siamese, volunteered at their clinic, worked for them and remain a volunteer and loyal client. I have never ever met a group of people more caring not only the the animals but to their owners.
I adopted Missy and Oreo from Second Chance. They're the loves of my life and are getting me through a tough time. Thank you Second Chance!!
We adopted Parker from Second Chance 2 months ago and the staff/volunteers there were very helpful and informative. Parker is high energy and a bit fearful so we got to know him and he got to know us over multiple visits. Very happy with our adoption experience. Highly recommend Second Chance Animal Shelter.
i've had pets all of my life but at age 75 and after losing Remy I wouldn't plan to have any more pets. In August '24 Second Chance started to tell their story online of Sophie, the tiny 9 year old shih tzu. She was surrendered to them and they took a chance & removed a baseball size malignant tumor from her abdomen. I sent a contribution, but (remember) I wouldn't have another pet at my age. I picked up my grandchildren from camp and in the parking lot I showed them the picture of precious Sophie. We went immediately to Second Chance, fell in love, and adopted her. I ... wasn't going to .. have another pet ...... :-). She is 'the love of my life', and the entire family absolutely adores her. By the way she is energetic, fun-loving, cuddly, absolutely perfect, and seems to be doing very well. If love can keep her healthy she'll be with us for a very long time (heart emoji). The folks at Second Chance are devoted and loving, and I wish each of them well in their work with the animals.

I'm a 75 year old retired hospice nurse and wasn't going to have another pet after my last dog passed away, but noticed a Facebook post from Second Chance about a little 9 year old Shih tzu who was going to have surgery for a baseball size mass. In a couple of days it was good to see that her surgery had gone smoothly. I was so drawn to this little one's story. A few days later it was posted that the mass had shown cancer cells. I wanted to bring her home. The staff at the shelter was so warm, welcoming and friendly and provided plenty of time for my grandchildren and me to get to meet Sophie, and to tell us as much as they could about her to make sure that all would be just right for her and for us to adopt her. My entire family is head over heels over this adorable little bundle (she's only 8 pounds), and Sophie is doing very well & has the energy of a 9 month old puppy instead of a 9 year old pup. We adore her! The shelter staff has followed her through vet reports and the pictures that I send to them. Kudos to these genuinely caring people, and to the work they do. Thanks to them for providing Sophie with her 'second chance' ~ she is such a love!
I fostered a mama cat and her 3 babies from Here Today Adopted Tomorrow, it was a great experience!! I did turn into a "foster fail" but I very much would like to foster with them again. I love that they have a "common" room for the kitties, not only does this give the cats a chance to interact with other kitties but with people too and I think this is wonderful and a great benefit. The facility is vey clean and everyone is very friendly and helpful. I know they care very much for the cats in their care and want only the best for them. They also help those in the community by giving pet food to those who need it. I always recommend them to others looking to adopt or foster.
I highly recommend supporting Second Chance Animal Shelter, a dedicated organization that provides a safe haven for abandoned, abused, and stray animals. Their mission goes beyond basic shelter, focusing on medical care, volunteerism, and finding loving, permanent homes for the animals in their care. The shelter operates through a combination of volunteer efforts, donations, and community outreach, making a tangible difference in the lives of countless animals each year.
Hello all I fostered the most handsome furry kitten through second chance. He was the only one found no mom or litter mates. Second chance helped me w everything I needed to bottle feed him and care for him back to health. Thank you second chance for all you do

I fostered Maggie Mae after losing my shih tzu months prior. I love little dogs she was a boxer big but very skinny she had just came into second chance and needed to be medically cleared before adoption. I took her to her appts loved her back to health and then when she was ready to be adopted out I just couldn’t do it we kept her and loved her since she still sees her vet at second chance Dr Celmer who is amazing in every way.
I am a fairly new voluteer at the Second Chance Adoption Center.I was hesitant about voluteering, worried that it might be too sad.As it turns out ,my volunteer day is on of my favorite days of the week. The animals are so well cared for,the staff is so dedicated and kind.I wish all of the animals a forever home, but while they are waiting, they could not be in a more loving and safe place.
We have done multiple fosters and adopted from second chance. Seeing the incredible work they do for the animals they serve has been a great experience. They are by far the best rescue we have ever worked with or adopted from.
Second Chance is such a great organization. My family have been donating/volunteering for years and we’ve been so impressed by how well they treat their animals. Recently we’ve also taken our dog for grooming services and continue to be impressed!
We love Second Chances Animal Services ! The staff is so nice and always helpful with any questions. We are fostering for them and adopted our baby boy Leo. It is truly a pleasure to volunteer and help the shelter achieving their goal: keep helping as many animals as possible.
After losing my dog to a neurological problem, my grandchildren were encouraging me to think about getting another pet. I didn’t think I was ready until Second Chance animal shelter posted a story about Sophie, a little nine year-old Shih Tzu, who was to have surgery for a baseball size tumor. They gave an update when the surgery was done, and then again when the biopsy report came back positive for cancer. Second Chance animal shelter posted that once healed from the surgery she would be available for adoption as a hospice pup. My grandchildren and I went to meet her and then were able to adopt her once her stitches were removed. My adult children, grandchildren, and I are undeniably completely head over heels in love with this loving, sweet, adorable, happy cuddly tiny bundle of fur. The several staff members with whom we had contact on the phone, meeting Sophie, and then for the adoption, as well as their follow up contacts were so helpful and supportive. Sophie goes to Second Chance Veterinary in North Brookfield and the staff there have been incredible with her (including the little nervous-incontinence issue Sophie had — thanks for your awesome sense of humor, Chelsea. I’m sorry about the scrub pants and shoe :-). My family and I are deeply grateful that you gave this precious pup her second chance and wonderful care. She is dearly loved.
I first became aware of Second Chance from a charity dinner I attended. I was thoroughly impressed with the organization of the event, the silent auction items, and after shedding a few tears listening to their recap of the year of all they have done and all the animals they helped, I wanted to become more involved. Fast forward, I have been a volunteer with Second Chance for the past couple of years and continue to be impressed with how hard they work to not only help and care for the animals they rescue, but also the resources they give to animal owners in the communities they serve. From veterinary services, vaccine clinics, pet grooming, food banks, and more. They truly are an impressive organization. When my 14.5 year old pup passed away in 2022, I new two things #1. I wanted to rescue a pup and #2. I knew EXACTLY where it would be from. Oliver has been part of the family for 1.5 years now and we couldn't imagine life without him. He brings us so much joy and he is the BEST snuggler! Thank you Second Chance for all you do and thank you for bringing me Oliver.
I have been volunteering with Second Chance Animal Services for over six years, and I have adopted both of my dogs from their shelter. They are an excellent animal services organization that does incredible work in the communities that they serve - offering excellent veterinary services, a pet food pantry, and an adoption center among other things. The staff are professional and work hard to make sure that the animals are well cared for and go to good homes. They provide excellent training and support to the many volunteers as well. I have been bringing students from the high school where I work to volunteer at the animal shelter and I can say it's the highlight of their week! Here is a photo of my two Second Chance alumnae.
My daughter and I volunteer at Second Chance 3 or 4 times a week caring for the cats. The staff is so welcoming and the shelter is very clean and well organized. The cat's gets extra snuggles and playing Everytime we come.
Of course, we couldn't spend that much time with the cats and not fall in love with at least one. Two weeks ago we adopted a sweet 11 year old cat. The adoption process was as smooth as every other aspect of this shelter. An amazing organization full of generous people doing great work for the animals, and people in our community.
Our family got involved with Second Chance a little over a year ago because my girls were interested in volunteering with animals. We are animal lovers and all of our pets came from shelters or rescue organizations. Volunteering and giving love and attention to pets with no homes is a cause close to our hearts. We have since volunteered with the cats at the adoption center and I can attest to the great care they receive and the affection the staff and other volunteers have for their animals. The hope is that one day they will all find their forever homes, but until then, they are truly in good hands at Second Chance.
Second Chance Animals is ALWAYS, constantly, tirelessly leading efforts to provide quality care and forever homes to animals in the New England area. Their mobile adoption units connect people with the adoptable pets, improving both the animal and human lives. I love their fundraising initiatives, and i think Second Chance does an amazing job educating the local (and online) communities on best pet practices, sharing helpful spay-neuter info and above all - giving all the animals the second (third, fourth..) chance in life that they all so desperately need.
SCS has caring staff and goes beyond to help out all animals in need, dedicated staff always willing to go the extra mile. they bring pets in harms way from other states and give them shelter, love, warmth, and hope. I adopted my miles AKA muppet from SCS and was so grateful that they took him in from a terrible situation from Ohio. Miles did not have it very good in Ohio, but lived nearly 8 years with us and had a great life, All this was due to SCS caring and dedicated staff.
Everyone is very welcoming, and they try to take great care of all the animals. Even if it’s one sneeze, trying to make sure all the animals feel safe. I would say this nonprofit it’s the best one I’ve been to, they keep everything clean and organized. I would say the past 2 times I’ve been there were better than my other experiences.
The staff are always super knowledgeable and kind. And when they don’t know something they are eager to find answer for you. I’ve never had a bad experience when volunteering here. You can tell by how happy the animals are, that they are well loved and taken care of.
I have had the opportunity to volunteer with Second Chance Animal Services each week for the last 2 and one half years. I can sum up the experiences with them as simple efforts with amazing returns! ! Friday morning I go to the shelter to help care for the dogs. Initially the puppies and dogs are barking their greetings! After being out for for some exercise, breakfast and having their kennels cleaned ,they are remarkably calm and very appreciative! Staff is amazing in their commitment and other volunteers are extremely hard working and compassionate. The impact of Second Chance is far reaching. I have been able to volunteer doing outreach activities at The Overlook in Charlton . Puppy Yoga at Timberyard Brewing, Cruise for Critters in Monson, monthly tag sales and helping deliver cat and dog food to local food pantries. People light up when they speak about their pets past and present. To a person they have had such an positive experience with Second Chance.. I am most fortunate to be one of them also! I have adopted to my dog. Ned and cat Callie from Second Chance!
I volunteer at SCAS in East Brookfield. The cats are delightful and are treated as one of a great big family. They all have their own distinct personality-nice, cuddly, playful, sassy etc. The staff is incredible in finding homes for all the pets, whether a cat, dog or bunny. They care. All receive food, shelter and love as they prepare for their next home and adventure.
Got my dog from them years ago, and still use this place for his vet care and he is the best thing that ever happened to me.
Aegon is my best friend and constant companion. As a service dog, he is my shadow and saves my life on the daily. In 2021, when Aegon was turning four, I was in the process of getting ready to hopefully welcome a new member of my pack home, as I know that Aegon will not be able to work forever and it is my wish to allow him to have a well-pampered life as a pet with me for his senior years. Part of this preparation was having him sterilized to promote well being between any pup that might come into the home and himself, as well as foster a good starting relationship with the breeder I was speaking with at the time. As a disabled individual who has to watch where the pennies go very carefully, I was having a hard time, even with my regular vet, in coming up with the funds for the procedure while at the same time attempting to save for a puppy and the expenses that come with that.
Enter Second Chance Animal Services. My mom had adopted a mixed breed dog from Second Chance a few years before, and knew that they offered a voucher program. She found a post on Facebook about their upcoming Voucher Day Spay/Nueter, and I went directly to the website and was able to get the LAST SPOT.
I dropped Aegon off in the morning and was able to add on a microchip to my little off-duty Houdini. Understandably I was nervous, not for him as I know the reputation of Second Chance very well, but for myself. When it came time to pick him up, I walked in with the rest of my group, and watched the informative aftercare video. He must have been the third dog that came out, drunk as a skunk but wagging his tail as soon as he smelled me. I was informed by the tech that had brought him out that he had been a star and done super well before, during, and after his surgery, and that they wished that they got more akita in that were like him. They made me feel amazing about all of the training that I put in to him, and were available for any questions I might have during his recovery, though I didn't have any. Aegon healed fully within a couple of weeks and by the next month was back in harness and ready to work. We haven't gotten his understudy yet, but since his sterilization I have noticed an increase in his wanting to be with his people. Other than that, he's the same old Aegon, running around like he's a puppy and taking his work as serious as any dog.
I never would have been able to get this done without Second Chance, and the care that they gave him really put my fears to rest for the day. The vets and techs are allstars.
I love SCAS! I help as a volunteer when I'm able and that's how I first came to love SCAS - as a volunteer cleaning the cat areas. At the time, I already had a cat but every day I would see all these kitty meows and want to take all of them home. One day my own cat never came home and I was devastated. The staff and other volunteers there were great! They helped me move through this hard time AND I got extra play time with the cats and kittens. And that's when I fell in love with this one feisty little calico kitten named Moxie. Every time I would walk past her cage, she would climb the cage and swipe at my arm as I walked by. When it was time for her cage to be cleaned, I would hold Moxie in the crook of my arm and one of the other volunteers would hold her sister Evie (a beautiful and docile little black kitten). Moxie would curl up in my arm, perfectly content and go to sleep. WELL.......that was it! I decided to adopt her! She still has the name Moxie (the shelter names all the animals) because it totally fits her personality. She's a feisty little spitfire! And I love her oodles and bunches! SCAS provides THE best of services - to the animals, to their staff, to their volunteers and to all of their customers. Moxie was my Second Chance and I'm so thankful to SCAS. Here's some photos of the queen diva herself!
We adopted our pup from second chance when he was 8 weeks old he’s now almost 6 months old and we are so grateful that second chance helped us give our pup his loving and caring forever home.
I adopted my dog Reeses from Second Chance. He has been, for the past seven years, a great addition to my family!
We adopted our dog Brady (formerly Octavian) from Second Chance 3 years ago. I cannot tell you how awesome the whole process was! Brady has brought so much joy into our lives, and I am so grateful for Second Chance!
We adopted two dogs through Second Chance at two separate times. Our first dog was a 6 year old beagle that we named Bailey. About a year later we decided to adopt a second dog. They made sure that Bailey was compatible with the new dog. We then adopted an almost 3 year old cocker spaniel that we named Aubrey. We have used Second Chance vaccine clinics and their Veterinarian services. We have always found the staff friendly and helpful. Just a month ago we had to bring Bailey in due to the deterioration in her health. She was almost 16 years old! The veterinarian and staff were compassionate and explained all of our options. We were able to have a few more days with Bailey before we let her go as she was really declining. The staff comforted us and explained the process. They gave us time and helped us along the way as we said goodbye. It was a difficult thing to do but we had almost 10 years with Bailey. Aubrey is 9 years old now and we continue to utilize Second Chance Services.
We adopted our latest dog from Second Chance. He has been a great addition to our family. The staff is very friendly and helpful.
When we went to Second Chance Animal Shelter to adopt about 8 years ago, my boyfriend said to me that if a dog looked at him and sneezed then that was the dog. His childhood dog did that. Bailey, a beagle, was about 8 years old then and was in the kennel when Dave noticed her. I was looking at another dog. Next thing I knew Dave had a leash in his hand and we were taking Bailey (known at that time as Polly) for a walk. At the end of the walk we sat on a stone wall and at that moment Bailey looked at Dave and sneezed! We adopted her that day! A couple of years later we were ready to add another dog to our family. I had always wanted a cocker spaniel. Second Chance had just rescue about 14 cocker spaniels from a hoarding situation. We didn’t think about going anywhere else but there. We adopted an almost 3 year old Aubrey (known as Jeannie) then.
We have taken both of our dogs to Second Chance Animal Services for vaccinations and care. Unfortunately a few weeks ago Bailey wasn’t doing well so we had to bring her in. The staff was honest, compassionate and caring as they helped us to navigate the end of her life. It was a very difficult time for us but they helped us through it. I highly recommend Second Chance.
I’ve been volunteering here every week for a few months now and it’s amazing!! I can honestly say all of the staff genuinely care about the animals and do their absolute best to help them
We adopted our Georgie Girl (formerly Fumble) in September of 2020 after losing our family dog of 15 years. We had no idea the amount of love and light she would soon bring into our home. Second Chance made the adoption process easy while still ensuring we were the perfect match for her. Our Georgie loves going to our house on Cape Cod, which we have lovingly dubbed “Georgie’s Dog House”. She loves the beach, snuggling and playing with whatever toys she can find. Second Chance gave us the gift of unconditional love on four legs. Georgie is our whole world and we are eternally grateful for her. Thank you Second Chance Animal Services!
I started volunteering to take care of kitties to honor a perfect kitten I had who died at two years old. He was gorgeous and he knew it. That was over eleven years ago and it is one of the most rewarding and heart-healing things I have ever done. I have taken care of thousands of kitties and fall in love every week. I have spoon fed them, wiped their noses and butts and loved them all to the moon and back. Some of the staff have become like family, and I love them.

We adopted our pup Rocco (formerly Tackle) from Second Chance Animal Services in September of 2020. The staff there are awesome and the process was smooth, but also thorough. We immediately fell in love with Rocco and cannot imagine our lives without him now! He is the sweetest, funniest, smartest, most handsome guy. He won the Redemption Rock Brewing taproom dogs calendar contest and is the proud cover dog on their 2021 calendar. He loves all people and dogs, loves going places, loves to play and go on hikes, loves the beach, and loves food. We've taken him on two big road trips this year (to the Southwest and to Florida) and he did so well! He just turned a year old and we can't wait to take him on more adventures this year. Thank you Second Chance!
Thanksgiving 2020 was all planned, not at our home and 2 days before at 11PM I decided to look one more time at the Second Chance website. There she was..adorable little white fuzzy face. I woke my husband up and we decided we would be there long before they opened the very next day. We loved Gracie (formally Margo) and called our family to see if all the Thanksgiving stuff could be transferred to our home. Never looked back...Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all you do..
We did a foster to adopt with Elsie (black & white lab mix) as she was heartworm positive. Second Chance never gave up on her and she finally recovered after many months and we were finally able to adopt her. Being a very shy girl, we then adopted Luke (black lab) to help bring her out of her shell. They are such a happy pair and we are so thankful to Second Chance! Staff at the shelter and the vet clinic are wonderful and always so happy to see the dogs when they come in for a checkup.
I have never wanted anything more than a dog and we adopted Ellie (formerly known as Sunday) over five years ago from second chance! she is a sweet, happy, funny girl with a whole lot of fire and personality. her favorite activities include going on walks, playing outside, cuddling on the couch or in bed, and going on adventures and vacations with her family. she loves her people the most and enjoys hanging out with her doggy friends. we even did a DNA test and discovered that she’s mostly beagle and poodle with a little bit of yorkie! we love her so much and can’t imagine our family without her, thank you so much to second chance for rescuing Ellie and so many wonderful animals!
Adopted my dog Oscar from here nearly two years ago while working at Second Chance. He was rescued by a Good Samaritan after his previous owner, overwhelmed and not knowing what to do, tried to place him in a dumpster. I am so thankful that this man knew Second Chance would help find him a loving home. They got him neutered and all up to date on his vaccines before adoption. He was quite a handful when I took him home, but he has truly changed my life, I knew he was meant to be my dog the minute I meant him, and I’ll be forever grateful for Second Chance and the man who saved him for bringing him to me.
best place ever to adopt your for ever friend love them and they are very help full on what you need for your pet they are wonderful people lovely staff it was an excellent experience to get a dog with them
I had a excellent experience adopting my dog Ranger (formerly Oreo) from Second Chance Animal Shelter in Nov. 2020. The staff were very friendly and helpful during my experience and I utilized the complimentary Vet Wellness Check too. I highly recommend Second Chance to anyone interested in adopting a pet from a great organization.
I adopted both my super mutt Coco and epic cat Sherman from Second Chance, and have them both there for medical care. They're the nicest people on earth and genuine animal lovers. We're fortunate to have them in our community.
My name is Igor and I wanted to tell you my story. This story starts out sad and it ends happily. SCAS was called to an emergency hoarding situation that was horrifying to say the least. I was one of 27 cats living in this filthy home. One day we had several heroes walk into our house to save us and our lives were forever changed. The day they found me I had an upper respiratory infection which caused my eyes to weep. When my rescuers saved me they didn’t know that not only that I had weepy eyes, but I was crying for love and attention. Soon my brothers and sisters found ourselves being escorted to SCAS for check-ups, flea treatments and anything else we needed. My time at SCAS started in a quarantine state and I was completely shut down. I never knew a loving hand so I would hiss and scratch anyone who tried to love or care for me. After I was released from quarantine I was sent to spend my days at the adoption center in a small cage and I would not leave the shelf and was still very angry. Then a glorious day in June happened when I got released into a foster home. Was I a nice guy when I got there? I will admit I was not on my best behavior but the foster family didn’t want to give up on me. The first two months I lived there I would not come out from their dark basement. At least it was summer because it was like living in an air conditioned building which was fine with me. The only way I would eat was when they slid my bowl across the room to me and leave. One day I ventured up the steps to explore the house. The people were surprised to see me, but they stayed still so I would enter the room. This is where I found my new best friend, Doug, the orange cat. I felt that after hiding for two months and giving out many war wounds, that maybe I was ready to be a nice guy. At first when I came upstairs I would only stare at these people and sit on a pizza box. My foster mom was promoting me all over the place to try and find me a home but no one was coming forward. Seven months and I was still a foster cat with no hope of a home. My happiest day finally came on Christmas morning 2016 when I received my adoption papers under the tree stating I was my dad’s Christmas gift! My life has forever been changed and now I participate in regular photo shoots from being all natural to wearing a suit. Also, I have two sisters (cat and dog), a brother (Doug), a mom and a dad. I knew where my home was before my family did. Life can’t get any better than it is now. I am proof that with a little time, love and a pizza box a broken heart can be healed and a shut down animal can become a gift for all who know them.

It all started a little over 4 years ago when our beloved beagle passed. We went to SCAS 6 days later and met Lucy who was timid. She was also the oldest pup in the bunch so we took a chance on a girl that was barking and showing her teeth. Took her 2 years to accept her Poppy but now she gives us unconditional love. Lucy is the reason I decided that day I was going to volunteer. Since then we have adopted 3 others from Second Chance, two we fostered first. We took in Igor who was from a hoarding case of 27 other cats and was the most shut down and I was determined to find him the best home, but we became a "failure" and he already knew he was home. Billie is wonderful and we fostered her when she was 4 weeks old, adopted her soon after we started fostering and she thinks she is the princess. Jethro we got nearly a year ago after I went in and took his photos I came home and told Joe all about him. However, by the time Joe met him he was on hold but that fell through and the next day we decided to adopt him. Joe started volunteering with me 3 years ago and he goes in every weekend (and any other opportunity he has) and for 2 hours he walks the dogs nonstop. I have been involved in almost every volunteer accept there is from walking the dogs to being the photographer. Nothing makes me happier than the opportunity to help SCAS and I love taking the photos. Second Chance is a great place and consider them when you need to find the love of your life.
We adopted Douglas in June. the whole experience was very positive; Second Chance staff clearly cared about Douglas getting the right - even though he had been there for 6 months they were very patient in trying to assess whether we were the right family for him. The staff knew him very well and answered all of our questions and interviewed us - observing how we were with him when we met Douglas. . We love our new family member! He was nervous at first - quite a change for him but after a week or so he settled in and gets calmer and more comfortable every day. Second Chance was very honest about his issues but they gave him basic training and all he needed was love and some boundaries and he has done extremely well. He was a little wild at first and a little nippy as you said he would be but with plenty of chew toys and discipline that has almost gone away. It is really exciting to see how a dog with "issues" can do so well with the right environment. We are so thankful for your work and wish we could do more.
We went to the emergency room and was told Dash needed surgery to remove fabric he had ate. If he didn’t receive surgery he was going to die a painful death or need to be put down. The emergency room needed $5,000 up front. I didn’t have the cash or credit to cover that. I was told to try several nonprofits and had until morning to find some one to do the life saving emergency surgery. Second Chance in Worcester saved Dash. Dash is my daughter’s and son’s life line. Their father was deported and will never be seen again. Dash came in to their life and that’s their shoulder to cry on. To talk to. And to run wild hiking and swimming. Dash is our everything and Second Chance allowed our family to keep our Dash with us. Second Chance saves more than just one life at a time. They save the family when they save the beloved pet.

Thank you for sharing Dash's story. We are humbled to have helped Dash and the people he loves.
Second Chance is by far the most wonderful place in animal care. The staff members legitimately care about animals. They treat all animals as if they were their own pets. I have 6 dogs and I trust Second Chance with all of my fur babies. They are AMAZING!!!❤

Thank you for your kind words.
Second Chance is staffed by very professional and caring staff and volunteers. The animals are treated with kindness and given much attention. The adoption process is very thorough with much emphasis on the appropriateness of the match.
I have fostered for Second Chance and I can't say enough about the care and support provided to foster families! They are always ready to assist with any questions and their vet staff is top notch! I then became a volunteer and that too is a great experience
We LOVE Second Chance!!!

My family & I adopted 2 dogs, different times. Staff are very friendly & helpful & caring for their animals
My son & I volunteer there also, great volunteer opportunity to share our love for animals
I have 2 cats and 2 dogs. They are amazing and their prices are very reasonable. Compassion is another’s quality, when one of my last pets had to be put down, they sent me a beautiful card with her actual paw print on it. Love them!
I've known them since their inception. They where a true blessing to the area back then, as they are still roday.
I am a volunteer and have seen the care of both humans and animals with the staff. They really make sure that the adoptive pet and potential family are a good match.
I adopted the perfect dog there a couple of years ago. All the staff seemed extremely dedicated and were very nice.
Fast forward a year later and that same dog that I adopted had to have surgery and the only local, affordable place to have it done was at the Second Chance Vet Climic in North Brookfield. They did a great job removing the corn cob from my dog’s digestive system and she lived to tell (or bark) the tale!
I volunteered at the Brookfield Second Chance Animal Shelter. I was always impressed with the care given to each animal by the staff and volunteers.
We adopted Daisy from second chance about 11 yrs ago. She was rescued from a puppy mill. Then just this March we adopted Neo from second chance, she was transferred from a shelter down south. We love our dogs, second chance helped us to rescue the two loving snuggly dogs.
Absolutely excellent, I go to the office in Springfield MA. Have 2 dog and a cat all getting up in age.dealing with Allergies, kidney, heart and thyroid problems pulse regular issues. I’m there all the time. Without them I don’t know what I would do. When I got my animals finances was not a problem but life has a way of changing, changing not always for the best. With Second Chance they give subsidies so I can meet my girls health need. This place is wonderful and treat my girls like their own pets. I need and we need this place please keep funding them. I would do anything for this place if I could.
Amazing! They do so much great work helping the community and providing much needed services.

We now have 3 family members who started their lives at Second Chance. 10 years ago we were lucky to find our first fur baby Aspen. He's a big loveable cat who keeps us on our toes even though he's getting up there in age.
He is a constant cuddler when you're having a bad day, recognizing that you need a little snuggle.
And recently we were double lucky to be chosen to be parents to two bunnies named Hoppy and Oreo. It has been quite the adjustment going from 1 cat to 1 cat and 2 rabbits but they all get along great!
Our family is more than grateful to Second Chance for all that they do for these animals and not giving up on them!
We adopted Sam from Second Chance Animal Shelter several years ago. They were wonderful to work with!! Sam is great dog and a special part of our family.
Baylee is the best edition to our family. Second Chance in East Brookfield helped us fill a void in our lives and our hearts! Her brother and her are inseparable. Thank you!!!
We’ve adopted both our dogs from second chance and they’re both wonderful! The staff was very friendly and seemed to know their stuff. Before we got our second dog they made sure we had a meet and greet with the first one to ensure they got along before allowing us to adopt. I recommend them to everyone who wants to adopt!
I’ve been volunteering at second Chance for almost 2 years now. I love being around the animals and working closely with the employees, both learning and helping to educate potential adopters. The work they do there is tireless and at times can seem thankless but the continue to make a difference inside and outside the community! I’ve volunteered at many different shelters and sanctuaries and SC is far and above the most dedicated to their mission! A great place to donate your time or money or find your new best friend!
My sister-in-law adopted a puppy from Second Chance Animal Services. The puppy became very ill a week later. Second Chance admitted the puppy to their North Brookfield, MA veterinary hospital and treated her for one week for parvovirus. She healed beautifully, and was returned to my sister-in-law. They were so impressed with the veterinary services provided to the puppy, and REALLY like the veterinarian. Veterinary services were free for the puppy. It was a great experience.
I had adopted 2 wonderful labs from Second Chance years ago. I had to recently put down the last one. Broke my heart again. I made it for 1 week and then looked on their website and found Beatrice. She came to Second Chance through the Grey Muzzle program. She is the sweetest, most lovable dog ever. Her coat was shiny, eyes bright, ans so used to belly rubs. It was very evident the staff gave her much love and attention. She became mine the day I met her and it has been a wonderful experience. The care from the staff was excellent. She was so happy to see them when I brought her back for a visit. Their mission and care hasn't changed since my first experience with them. What an amazing group of people.
This is my little girl Star. She is a rescue. And my heart. When she got a lump on her neck I was a very worried mom. Second Chance helped me. They took excellent care of her. Even when she was a pain in the butt and didn't want to stay long enough to wake up from her surgery. I think she thought I was not going to get her. The staff is fantastic, I love them all.

I live on a fixed income. It wasn't always that way. I have dogs and cats. When one of my dogs needed surgery I was told it would cost over $5000. I was devastated. How would I pay. Then Second Chance Animal Shelter Inc. With their veterinarian services. Helped me with my girl. And lucky no cancer. I don't know how I would get along without them. I thank them every day.
This is Hannah (formerly Ma), my husband and and I adopted her last March from your 2ast Brookfield shelter. She came from Mississippi and had ten pups prior. I Facebook with her foster family in Mississippi, who kept one of her pups. We simply adore Hannah! she's a doll, and makes our family complete!!!
I reached out to Second chance about a year ago for the perfect companion for my four autistic children. I wanted them to have a puppy or dog that would become part of the family as we settled into our new life in a new town. We were introduced to Harley. She came right up to my son and licked his face before cuddling up to my daughter. She definitely found her forever home and we found the dog we were hoping for. She loves to play with the kids and has befriended all my neighbors and their fur babies. Second chance was happy and available whenever I had questions and made sure everyone adjusted happily. We are so grateful!
My three rescues came from Second Chance Animal Shelter. I first adopted Lucy in 2007, then Jenny in 2010 and the newest member of my fur family, Dixie in 2015. I started volunteering at SCAS in 2013 and still continue to do so. All three of my "girls" go to the Second Chance Clinic in N. Brookfield, MA for their vet services. Jenny was diagnosed with Cushing's Disease in February. For the past 6 months Jenny has been going to the clinic for testing, check-ups and treatment. Each time I've taken Jenny to the clinic the staff and veterinarians have all been wonderful. Unfortunately Jenny (she was over 13 years old) recently had to be euthanized due to her illness. The staff could not have been more kind and understanding of the heartache I was experiencing. Hopefully I won't have to go through that again with either of my other two girls, but if it were to be, I know that I could go to SCAS and my girls would be taken care of by compassionate, knowledgeable people.
Herschel is the sweetest dog ever. I can't imagine if my family and Hersch never found each other. The wonderful people at Second Chance Animal Shelter gave Herschel much attention and affection while he lived at the shelter, and he also learned extra good behavior during the time he spent in Project Good Dog (he's a proud graduate). It wouldn't be the same without him. Thanks so much, Second Chance!

I adopted a senior dog from second chance in the fall of 2017. He was not quite ready to be adopted due to medical issues so we were able to foster to adopt while second chance continued to treat Wilbur. Second chance has given myself and my son more love then we ever knew possible. Wilbur will have life time medical issues but second chance took the time to discuss and to make sure we understood before adopting.
My husband Scott and I were looking for a small dog...so I started putting the word out on fb...where I met Gretchen from second chance...and she hooked us up with our little munchkin piney...he is such a sweet boy and we are forever thankful to second chance for our boy!!! The adoption process was so easy and we were able to foster him before adopting him last september... he is our fur baby and such a sweetie!!!! Thank you second chance!!!!!
We had been searching for another fur baby to join our family for a while. Adoption was something that was very important to us and wanted to provide a loving home to a dog in need. At the time, we lived in an apartment and several shelters/rescues turned us down due to that fact alone.
We found our Lola girl’s picture shared by a mutual Facebook friend and fell in love with her squishy face immediately. We filled out an application, and were invited down to Second Chance with our Boston Terrier Bentley. Bentley and Lola instantly connected, and so did my husband and I. The adoption process was completely seamless.
Lola holds an irriplaceable role in our family and we are so grateful for Second Chance for giving our family a chance!
I answered a plea for help. Ace is a black lab mix who needed hospice. Second Chance removed the tumor from his mouth but oral cancer is aggressive. Ace didn't seem to know how to be a dog and wasn't house trained. Boomer, also a dog from Second Chance adopted a year before, helped Ace learn. They are now inseparable brothers and Ace has lived months past what was expected. He is such a happy guy and shows no signs of sickness. Thanks to Second Chance Ace has a second lease on life.
i had a female Jack Russell dog for 12 years. she got very sick. the vets were so good to her. they helped her all they could to make her life a little better for her. and for awhile she was doing good. but her age and sickness caught up with her and she had to be put down. the vets showed so much compassion and love for my sweet Meiling . they stayed right with her through the whole process. while at the same time trying to comfort me. i will never go anywhere else with my animals . second chance animal hosp / shelter is really the place to go. whether your animals are sick or well. they all are my angels on earth.
We adopted our little Reese boy on June 2nd, 2018. This date will forever be sketched into my mind. We had been looking for a pup to add to our family and were continuously met with failure. A dear friend of mine mentioned Second Chance Animal Shelter and I decided to check it out. I scanned through the photos of their dogs available for adoption and came across Reese, he was categorized as a small breed dog and a lab/terrier mix. I was leaving the next day for a short get away. I found Reese’s photo after hours but decided to make the 1 hour trip to be there when the shelter opened up, hoping he would still be there and not at the mobile adoption. I filled out my paperwork and was shown to the room where Reese was! He was a tiny little fluff ball in the corner of a big crate. I melted when I saw him. He was handed to me and already, I was tearing up (I already knew he’d be coming home with me). We brought him outside and immediately he went to the corner of the play yard and went potty, I thought this was a great sign and I was right. We hardly had any problems with potty training! We played for an hour and loved one another until I had to leave for work. The volunteers were very Courteous and cautious about their adoptions, they wanted my significant other to be able to meet Reese before I took him home to make sure they meshed well. I put down my holding fee and we returned the next day. I was heartbroken to leave him. When we arrived the next day, I went to Reese’s crate and began talking to him, when I opened the door he stayed back but after a few seconds his tail started wagging and he came to the edge of the cage where he put both his paws on my shoulders and jumped onto me. The volunteer immediately left to begin the paperwork and we brought our baby home that day. I am forever grateful to Second Chance Animal shelter for introducing us to our boy and for all of their hard work and dedication for ensuring that these animals are with caring and loving families. I recommend them to everyone!
I visited Second Chance in November, 2013 and saw Hunter sitting quietly in a cage with a cone around his head. I went back the next day and asked to take him for a walk.....he loved to walk....my kind of dog, I said. Finally after discussing Hunter with my husband, I went back and adopted Hunter, who we then named Max. He has been my constant companion, and before my sickness we walked a long way twice a day. We will get back to that walking soon, in the meantime, my husband has taken over. I have called Second Chance on a few occasions for advice and they always talk to me at length. Thank you, Second Chance
We adopted our dog, Sophie, in 2009 (she’s now 10) from Second Chance and have had a wonderful experience with them from the very beginning. We are proud supporters of all that they do and Sophie and I still make visits back to the shelter to see how they are all doing. Their involvement with other rescues, education programs and relief efforts is exemplary! We always recommend SCAS to any other potential adopters without any reservations.
Second chance operates throughout the state and provides support in so many ways - even wildlife in some cases. We are lucky to have them in our communities, they have helped my veterinary hospital many times. Thank you second chance!
My dog was very ill due to 17 badly infected teeth. They made it affordable for me to be able to get my baby surgery! 13 and still going strong! Thank you Second Chance! BTW, Evil is my service dog! I wouldn’t be alive without her.
My wife and I just went to go look at dogs. We were introduced to Henley and instantly fell in love. We were lucky enough to bring Henley home in a week! Staff at second chance made sure Henley was healthy and ready for his forever home in a timely manner and answered all Our questions about him too!
Second Chance let me add the most precious addition to our family. His name is Nolan and he is a 7 month old shepherd mix and weighs 33 pounds now ! When we first got him he was only 11 pounds and 3 months old. The way we found this precious addition to our family was through second chance’s website. We saw his picture and fell in love and we filled out their survey online for him. So Second Chance closes a part of the day then reopens later on and we were there waiting outside a whole hour before they reopened that day. We were determined to get Nolan. We walked in and right then I was like I need to see Nolan please! They brought me to Nolan and he had my whole heart in his paws. Then we got to play with him and then we went through the adoption process which went so well and lady helping us was so nice! That’s how we added the most furry memeber of our family ! He is the light of our eyes and nothing beats that tail wagging and him running up to you every time you go through those doors or right when you wake up. Also, we do use the Second Chance Vet in North Brookfield and they are amazing as well! They are just all around a amazing organization! I always recommend them to anyone who is try to add a memeber to their family. Thank you so much for allowing this to happen Second Chance. We could not imagine our life without Nolan!!!
In November of last year we found out my husband had cancer. The depression that followed, I can’t even describe. My sister in law suggested we get a dog, and sent me a picture of a dog on the Second Chance Animal shelter web site. By the time we got there, that dog had already been adopted. The shelter staff pointed us in the direction of a boarder collie lab mix named Cole. One walk later Cole was coming home with us. He was so anxious being at the shelter he had locked sores on his paws, but he was still so happy. He fell asleep on my husbands lap on the ride home. All anyone knows about Cole is that he was rescued from a high kill shelter in TN. His anxiety has diminished now that he has a home, he is just happy all the time, with a big doggie smile.
With my husbands medical condition we had to have the right, the perfect, dog. That was Cole, after a family vote he was renamed Toby. He takes us for walks when we would rather stay in bed and when we need to be snuggled he is there. He brought joy during our darkest time and now that my husband is in remission he continues to bring us nothing but happiness.
2nd Chance accepted a small dog (Patty) that was surrendered by someone in the south with a loud heart murmur that was a severe problem that she was born with. My wife and I agreed to foster her so she would not die in a shelter. 2nd insisted on a Cardiology consultation and it turns out her problem was repairable. Although expensive they didn't hesitate to do what it takes to save her. Her problem became suddenly life threatening and she had the procedure to save her life. We were told not to worry about expenses, and that they would raise the money, Of course we are contributing to her care. Today she is happy, playful, chases chipmunks, and is a little love. Their only goal was to save this sweet little dog. Mission Accomplished.
We went to Second Chance to look at a dog that we saw and wanted. However, when we arrived we were told that he wasn't good with children so we asked if we could look at some others. While we were waiting we noticed a dog barking and trying to get our attention through the window so we asked if we could meet that dog. Needless to say we fell in love immediately! Her name is Maya and she's 8 years old and has been through a lot in her life including being on the streets with medical issues that required surgery. We met her foster Mom who gave us the tools we needed to provide a happy life with us in our home. We couldn't be more blessed to share our lives with Maya and provide her with warmth, shelter and love for the rest of her life! Thank You SECOND CHANCE!!!
My husband and I had been looking for a puppy to add to our family for a while. We finally saw one on Second Chnace’s website and decided to arrive early on a Saturday morning to be first in line. We ended up first but the puppy we wanted was at a mobile adoption event. The woman at the shelter called the mobile adoption and we were able to go and meet the puppy there. After her getting spayed, we were able to take Zoe (formally Alice) home! Second Chance was great to work with and we are so happy that we found our Zo Zo!
I have adopted 2 kittens from Second Chance, 1 about 4 years ago the other around 2. Both of them changed my life. They brought me companionship when I lived alone. Second chance was great to work with. I thank you for my fur babies!
A little over a year ago we went to Second Chance Animal Shelter hoping to adopt a kitten, but there were none. One of the volunteers suggested that we take a look at the cats just the same. We did and we were chosen by a 3 yo cat who stole our hearts. The whole experience with the staff and volunteers was wonderful. We fostered until adopted. Whenever I had a question I reached out to them and I always either got a call or email from Second Chance. Their responsiveness shows just how dedicated they are to helping animals find their forever homes. Even after the adoption was finalized they reached out to make sure everything was going well. We love our baby! Would recommend without hesitation to anyone looking for a pet to stop by Second Chance and take a look, ask questions, and adopt!
So this little dog had fallen on hard times and needed her "Second Chance." As she was not able to tolerate the shelter environment, SCAS arranged a foster family for her until we saw this irresistible face on their website and charged on up to get her. She is a happy, sweet girl who just wants to tell everyone how grateful she is to SC that they would go to any length to get her into a loving forever home. Thank you SCAS!!
Second Chance does an AMAZING JOB! They save and help so many animals each year and are such an important part of our community. I’m thankful for organizations like them and for giving making me a fur mom again with my little baby Dot!
I have been volunteering at Second Chance community vaccine clinics for 8 years. I assist people in filing out paperwork prior to their visit with the vet. Most of these clinics are set up where many people do not have access to or cannot afford needed vaccinations. Many times these vaccines are free or only five dollars and on many more than a few occasions, serviced over 250 pets lasting hours after the two hours planned in all sorts of weather. For many people this is the first time their animal has been seen. I started doing this when I retired from psychiatric nursing after 40 years. I had been helping people for years and as an animal lover, my plan was to now help animals. I see and pet the animals but what I have most taken away is the reactions of their guardians. Their comments are forever implanted on me. As they wait in lines that are sometimes down blocks and around corners, they keep cheerful and interact with each other and each other's pets. Dogs going around kissing everyone and unhappy cats meowing from their carriers. Labs named Buddy and black and white cats named Oreo abound. Their stories of adoption and rescue are inspiring and their love for their furry family members is never ending. They thank us in many languages and at time with tears. We are helping their lives by helping their animals. I have come to realize that in working at the clinics, I am still helping people.

The Top 10 reasons to adopt from Second Chance Animal Shelter. 1. NO KILL SHELTER. Irregardless of how long it takes, once rescued by Second Chance the animal stays until adopted. 2. No kill extends until past adoption..if you have to give up an animal adopted from Second Chance it is taken back by the shelter and kept till adopted again.3. If a rescued cat or dog is determined to be in need of more than routine Vet care for an illness or injury, the care is given. 4. The kennels and cat enclosures are cleaned ( litter boxes scooped) and animals are fed at least twice daily. 5. Volunteers and staff play with the animals and record behaviors to be passed on to potential adopters. All potential issues are presented to adopters. 6. All adopted animals are spayed or neutered, up to date on vaccines appropriate for age, micro-chipped, cleared by a licensed Vet and clean. Animals in need of dental work are held until the dental work is completed and then released to their adopters. Have you priced dental work at your Vet? 7. Potential adopters must complete an application which is reviewed by calls to their Vet to ensure their current animals are spayed and neutered and checking of references prior to approval. No walk in adoptions. 8. The donation to adopt an animal is appropriate to the age and amount of care needed to prepare the animal for adoption and the fact that it is considered a donation is clearly spelled out in the adoption contract and verbally by whomever goes over the contract verbally with the adopter. 8. Their is immediate access to Veterinary care through the Wellness Center in North Brookfield and through active relationships with local Veterinary Clinics. 10. THE CATS and DOGS ARE CUTE!
I personally, seven years ago, trapped three feral cats, a momma and her kittens. Second Chance loaned me the trap. They took such good care of them. Of course, they remain as pets in my home. Pets who actually don't appreciate petting.
I have my 4 cats and two little dogs vaccinated there. I watch who flows through the waiting room as I wait to see a vet. Everyone is taken care of in a timely, caring way. I have watched the growth of this business in our region to the benefit of hundreds of abandoned creatures. They are incredible and have saved so many animals from hardship and death. I have the utmost respect for them.
I have the pleasure of sharing my life with two rescues from Second Chance. Ace and Boomer are two black labs with very opposite personalities which makes for lots of fun. They give me something to look forward to every day i get out of work. The staff here were very helpful in making the adoption process almost effortless!
Made my dog and myself trip here very easy and mind easing. All for a low cost neutering. They made it happen!!
This is the very best!! The staff was so welcoming, helpful and friendly from the very first phone call through to the wonderful vet doing my dog's checkup and follow-up calls. They are affordable and have convenient locations. I highly recommend Second Chance.
I began volunteering seven years ago on Saturdays, and following my retirement I am now there four days per week. I am constantly impressed by the professionalism and caring attitude of all staff members and the attention and affection shown to the animals by my fellow volunteers. Every animal is treated with the utmost care , particularly the most in need of such treatment. I have adopted two kittens from Second Chance, and both of them have added so much joy to my life that I will be always grateful to the shelter and recommend it to my friends.
I rescued an elderly Chihuahua from the euthanasia list in NYC. She needed a dental...badly. Second Chance Wellness treated her like the queen she was and at about half the cost of "retail" veterinarians. This helps rescuers like me help more seniors. When someone tossed a sickly 5 week old kitten into my yard, Second Chance worked wonders with him! He was underweight, FIV+, and had a botfly larva lodged in his neck. One year later he was FIV-, HUGE and happy! Wonderful organization and the scope of their services is impressive.
On a -14 degree February day, local animal control picked up a skinny, mostly furless, not neutered, Lyme positive, Rottweiler with infected skin and several tumors. Second Chance took him in. A week later I fostered him. They supplied multiple medications, supplies, ongoing medical care, and surgery to neuter and remove the tumors. With my love, medicated baths 4 times a week, and Second Chances' expertise and support, within a few months "Carl," now Gideon was covered in the sleekest black fur and ready to go to his forever home—with me! He is the light of my life, shining love and positive ambassadorship (and a kiss or two) for an often maligned breed wherever we go. Check out the before and after pic.
We love Second Chance Animal Clinic...we get our dog's vaccines there and recently even had a little bunny spayed since they have a vet who is rabbit savvy. Also our cat was very sick last year (I though he was sick, anyway) and turned out he had a bad tooth which they were able to pull with sedation and it didn't cost a fortune. The building is very bright and clean and comfortable. The service is awesome and the staff is very compassionate. We recommend Second Chance to everyone.
I booked appointment for my 5 month old pup to be spayed. I filled out an application only to find out she would be done Free of charge. I couldn’t believe it ... free. On the day of the appointment I couldn’t have been happier with the staff. They all fell in love with my fur baby, and I felt good leaving her there knowing how friendly, and caring the staff was to everyone. It only took 24 hours for her to return to her happy self with no complications at all. I would recommend Second Chance to anyone looking for veterinary care for their pets. Thanks for everything!!
I've been involved with Second Chance for over 10 years and in that time I have seen such devotion and passion from everyone involved that it is amazing. At Second Chance every animal that comes into the building is treated with dignity and love from employees, vets and volunteers. They truly care to make sure each pet gets a forever home and will keep and care for every one until that time. You won't find a shelter that cares more or does more to help animals.
I started volunteering with Second Chance back in 2003, after retiring from the Corporate World. 15 years later I am a member of the Board of Directors. This is an organization that is driven by the passion of its founder to assist all animals and their families in any way that they can. Having begun life as a home based foster rescue at its inception in 1999, it has grown to serve over 26,000 in 2016 and approaching 30,000 this year, with its 3 subsidized veterinary clinics and its 3 adoption locations. With an estimated 23 million animals living in poverty in our nation, it was an imperative for Second Chance to become the ONLY animal welfare organization in the state of Massachusetts to provide full service veterinary care to the under served families of our communities who can not afford private vet care. Their love of their companion animals is as deep and committed as any pet owner. I am proud to be a part of the most compassionate, committed and talented group of staff, volunteers, donors and friends. This organization is helping in so many ways to make the lives of animals as happy and healthy as they can. It is far, far more than just a shelter!

This is an organization that works to bring help to the underserved. By providing subsidized veterinary care to those who would never be able to afford it frim conventional sources. They helped over 26,000 animals this hear. Their mobil units go direction into the neediest neighborhoods providing care to animals that would never get to see a vet otherwise.
Second Chance Animal Services is the best! I have been a volunteer for a few years now and am so impressed with all that they do for pets in need and the services they provide within several communities. We also adopted Sammi from Second Chance, our best dog ever! She was probably about 7 yrs old when she was rescued from a hoarding case and came to SCAS as an emergency placement from HSUS. She then went to Project Good Dog - a prison program where she spent 8 weeks with an inmate receiving 24/7 care and training. This is an outstanding SCAS program which provides such a positive outcome for dogs and inmates alike. Second Chance has wonderful staff, volunteers, vets and vet techs. I'm honored to be a part of this organization and we love our Sammi!!
I have been a cat room volunteer for almost 10 years now at Second Chance and just adore this place! I have 4 cats, 3 of whom have been adopted through Second Chance as well! The love, care and devotion shown to all the animals in all stages from sick to healthy is unprecedented. I also use the full vet service at their North Brookfield facility and love the fact I can bring the cats in for their shots on clinic days there. Please consider Second Chance when you are looking for a furry member to join your family! =^.,.^=
Second Chance took in dogs and cats from Florida after hurricane Irma. I heard from a friend one of the dogs was a "big shepherd female". I inquired about her and they were very honest that she was older and had some health issues. They were GREAT with communication every step of the way. We made arrangements to foster- to- adopt her. They were so helpful. This sweet girl has been with me over a month now. It's sad to say but I believe if she had landed at a different shelter she might not have made it.
She just went back to Second Chance for her spay and to have some tumors removed. Second Chance was amazing!!!! It's obvious everyone there really loves these animals, and cares about us crazy animal people. Nothing but positive things to say about my experience. Thank you Second Chance!
Adopting my dog was an amazing experience thanks to Second Chance. I felt confident in my decision and supported by their team. Thanks Second Chance for introducing me to Tucker (formerly Frank).
Our family spent many years at the Second Chance Walk n Wag event at Westville Dam with our dog. A fun way to raise money and awareness for a great organization. We look forward to working with Second Chance again as we find ourselves looking for new furry friends for our family.
I have been so impressed reading about the programs they have spearheaded over the years. Project Good Dog is that kind of win win situation that I love to hear about. The outreach and training they have done in Puerto Rico astounds me.
My family adopted Roxie (formerly Juno) a few years ago when our other dog passed away from cancer. I never thought another dog could even come close to being as awesome as our first dog but Roxie proved me wrong! I can't picture our lives without her! Second Chance is a great organization as they try to help every animal they can! They are super friendly & help you through the adoption process as smoothly as they can! And above all they blessed us with the sweetest loving dog you could meet! Thank you Second Chance for bringing Roxie into our lives! Adopt don't shop!
I am a foster with Second Chance and to watch first hand the animals they help save is amazing!! They are uncomplicated for those adopting animals... the process always go very smoothly as they are very organized. Their adoptable animals do not stay in the shelter long as they do many events to ensure they are adopted quickly!! Here is a small sampling of some of the fosters that we have been fortunate to help through this wonderful organization...
I have been a volunteer at second chance taking care of the dogs for 8 years now. They go above and beyond to make sure every animal that comes through their doors gets the care and attention they need and to find the best home for their happy ending. Five stars isn't enough to show how I feel about this shelter and their staff!
Our foster to adopt kitty Charlie (previously known as Elvis Pawsly). He was just cleared medically this weekend so we look forward to completing the adoption process soon!
Adopting from Second Chance Animal Shelter was a fantastic experience. From the moment you submit the adoption paperwork, to bringing your pet home and even afterwards, they are with you every step of the way.
The staff really gets to know the animals and they try to fill you in as much as possible so you KNOW what to expect from the animal you are choosing and steer you in the right direction for a good fit into your family/home. You never feel rushed, they allow you to spend ample time with a prospective fur family member.
The animals come vetted as well as microchipped. You are made aware of their veterinary findings so nothing is hidden from you.
The facility was well staffed, clean and the animals in their care were very well taken care of. The staff is polite, knowledgeable and helpful. So much so that they encourage you to contact them for any reason post adoption.
We did see that there were many more animals looking for homes than what was on the website, so definitely go in and a take a look.
If you are looking to adopt, Second Chance should be a first choice.
We adopted two kittens from SCAS. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. They went out of their way to give us time to meet their available pets. In the end, we brought home Luna and Skye and we couldn’t be happier. We have recommended SCAS to many of our friends and they have thanked us over and over!
We have adopted three cats and a dog through this wonderful shelter. They are tireless when it comes to caring for animals...finding them homes and providing low cost care.
We just recently adopted an 8 year old lab, actually still in the fostering stage. SCAS has made sure she's completely vetted before the adoption is complete, and has been very proactive with our new Allie.
Our other dog, Dammit, has been going to their wellness center for 2 years, and just loves them there.
I could not be happier with both the adoption center and the wellness center. The vets have a better bedside manner than MY doctor!
Second Chance has the best, and most caring staff. They love animals, and take great care of them. Very convenient locations, and pricing is subsidized, helping those on fixed incomes. Highly recommend them !!
We adopted Zeke 2 yrs ago. Second chance was phenomenal from starting the application process to questions I may have had after we brought him home. Everyone was very friendly and helpful when it came to finding the "right" dog for our family. When we adopt again we will always come here .
I love Second Chance, not only have I adopted two wonderful family members from them, there Vetrinary team is the very best. They have treated my family like their own!
I have the greatest love and respect for what the folks at SCAS do every single day! We adopted both of our boys from them as pups when they were just starting out and were fostering the puppies in their own homes. After many long, happy years together our dogs crossed the rainbow bridge and although it took us over a year to grieve, we felt ready to welcome another fur-baby into our lives. Enter SCAS with their amazing staff and special animals, we came home last week with a 9-year old "pup" who had fallen on hard times and needed her second chance. We love this organization so much, we have included them in our estate planning wishes.
I work at the Wellness center and have never before worked with such a great and caring group of doctors and technicians who go above and beyond for the animals and owners. Numerous people thank us on a daily basis for helping them care for their animals and appreciate how much we care for both them and their animals. I also volunteer at the shelter with my son and see the compassion the workers and volunteers have over there as well. The care and love at the shelter for these animals is amazing! To see the transformation of the animals from when they first arrive to when they find their new forever home is nothing I can put into words. I am truly grateful for being able to work for such a great organization who never stops trying to help animals in need.
I have the pleasure of working for Second Chance Animal shelter and I have never worked with such a compassionate group of people before! Everything the organization does is for the animals and for the community!
Second chance helps so many animals each year with their programs. They strive to help wherever possible. I have worked there for several years and it has been a pleasure to help so many pets and their families.
Second Chance helps over 20,000 pets a year through adoption, spay/neuter, veterinary care including subsidized rates for pets in need, community vaccine clinics, training, educational outreach, and a pet food pantry. Second Chance is an innovative shelter that is revolutionizing animal welfare by getting to the root causes of animal suffering and abandonment
This is directed to Sweetstuff who gave Second Chance Animal Shelter a poor rating because you decided that the sweet little dog you adopted was too much trouble because he had to go to the bathroom and you were too lazy to clean it up! You then complained because you couldn't get your money back after "returning" the dog.
People like you should not have animals! Your con didn't work! Thank goodness this poor little dog was returned to the good, kind and generous people of Second Chance!
I started volunteering for Second Chance about 15 months ago. While it is not the first animal organization I've volunteered with, it is certainly the most rewarding experience I've ever had. The staff are knowledgable and personable. They never ever fail to express appreciation to the volunteers. Yes, they have some strict adoption policies, such as no same-day adoptions, you must have your adoption application preapproved, but the policies are there for the protection of the animals. And it's all about what's best for the animals
My domestic partner and I had been searching for a new best friend to join our household for about 3-4 weeks with regular weekend trips from Boston out to Second Chance as well as many other shelters in between. During this time we learned that although pet adoption is a much more P.C. path to take in getting a pet then a breeder a lot of the adoption agencies held some serious reservations about young couples (mid-20s) and seemed to treat both of us as though we were making poor life decisions. This, however, was NOT the case at Second Chance. We loved the atmosphere and the adoption fees are INCREDIBLY low. These reasons alone made the ~45 minute drive worth it each weekend to find the right dog for us. After our long search we found 'Betty,' now known as Fenway, the (what was stated as) "Short-haired chihuahua mix." (The jury is still out on her being 'short-haired' and WHAT the mix is because she looks like a golden retriever puppy). Without getting any further long winded I just want to say that I wouldn't change ANY of the choices we made, Second Chance and the staff we had the pleasure to meet and deal with were great, location was as clean and pleasant as you can expect for a building with 20+ animals living there, and the fees, oh the fees are SO0o0o0o minimal!
our family was looking for a small dog to join our family and picked out a dog from second chance...although the dog was a wonderful dog we were lied to and had no other option but to bring her back. we were told she was fully house trained and after having her for over 2 weeks she peed and pooped everywhere but outside.... this posed as a problem seeing i have two your children and having a dog pooping and peeing everywhere is unsanitary. we even tried crate training and she would poop and pee in her crate. so we brought her back and they refused to give us back our money because we singed a contract..........so.... WARNING THESE PEOPLE ONLY CARE ABOUT MONEY NOT THE ANIMALS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BUYER BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

loving pets 07/13/2012
Just to set the record straight..... the dog in question has since been adopted successfully and the adopter has reported NO issues with housebreaking. It is very sad that you did not give the dog time to adjust. As for the adoption fee, the adoption fee is non-refundable, as noted in the contract. We do this so that people will think seriously about adopting and remember that these are living breathing pets, not sweaters to be returned. The adoption fee is very low and does not even begin to cover the costs of helping these animals. It is merely a financial commitment to taking a pet home. We offer free after adoption training and advice which you never used. Pets need time to adjust to a new home, having the dog for only a few days is not a fair amount of time for a pet to get used to their surroundings, your schedule, and the change in their lifestyle. I would encourage anyone thinking of adopting a pet to be sure they are ready to give a pet time to adjust to their home. Houssebreaking issues occur when a pet does not know the schedule and when they get let out. Getting them on a schedule as quickly as possible will avoid any housebreaking issues.
Client, Donor & Volunteer. In February 2003 we adopted our first dog from Second Chance, the little shelter in the woods. We were so impressed by the staff & volunteers that in November 2003 we adopted our second dog. Over the years we have seen how other shelters operate and Second Chance was the only shelter doing it right. They cared about the dogs & cats, they made sure they got the medical attention needed and checked every application to be sure both the adopters and the new family member were perfect for each other. We have donated, sponsored, volunteered, adopted and will keep doing so because we believe in the mission of Second Chance. We just adopted our fifth dog and just as before our family is overjoyed. Thank you from Lady, Brownie, Baby, Miss Molly & Ebby for giving them a second chance at life.
I love Second Chance Animal Shelter. They do a thorough check to make sure that the animals are going to good homes, but they don't make the process overwhelming (like other shelters I was considering). After my adoption application was approved, I went down to pick out a dog. They talked to me and helped me pick out the perfect match. You can see that they genuinely care about these animals, and it has little to do with money. They charge, what to me, seemed like too little for a dog. I was looking at other shelters that wanted $400 plus for dogs (that to me means they work more for profit than the animals best interest). When I got there to get a dog there were many people there waiting to look too. What caught my attention was that as we were looking one of the workers said that they would be going to the Springfield Shelter to get dogs that were due to be put down due to over crowding. I was impressed and I know you will be too.
Three years ago my husband and I adopted a 12 week old Australian Shepherd/Collie mix named Matty. When we went to the shelter we were so impressed with how clean it was and how caring the staff was with all the animals. I'll never forget the day Joe called and said that they would be honored for us to have Matty and how when we picked him up, the volunteer had tears in her eyes as she watched Matty romp away with us. This shelter really does care and takes extra effort to make sure the animals are matched with the right families. Matty turns 3 on Feb 2nd and I'll be sending his birthday pic in to the Happy Endings because I know how much they really do care. Thanks to Second Chance, not only for Matty, his sister Missy and mother Maggie who all found great homes. But also for all the other wonderful animals they cared enough about to find them Forever Homes!
10 years ago I adopted a dog from Second Chance Animal Shelter as the result of a fateful encounter with a volunteer foster family. The dog had come to the shelter as a stray, in poor health, underweight, and had scars on her body indicating an encounter with a moving vehicle. By the time this dog came into my life she was in full health and happy as could be. I was very impressed with the network of people who came together to bring this stray dog to health and provide her a promising future: from the person who found her and thought her worth saving, to the veterinary team that nursed her to health, to the volunteers and the foster family who cared for her and taught her how to trust again.
A few years later, my husband and I were looking to add a cat to our family and we immediately thought of Second Chance Animal Shelter. We visited the physical shelter for the first time and were immediately impressed by the cleanliness of the facility. We adopted not one, but two cats that day. In the nine years since, I have heard much about the shelter. The Second Chance Animal Shelter is so much more than what goes on inside its walls. The SCAS family is wholeheartedly dedicated to the animals in every way, from ensuring the health and well being of the animals, to screening potential adopters and finding the best possible match, to educating the community about pet wellness and the services available. I needed to be a part of this, a part of something good, something bigger than myself. So I signed up to volunteer. Being a part of the mission and knowing I am making a difference has been so rewarding. Not only am I contributing to improve the lives of the animals, but also to help those seeking to add a new pet to their family and those struggling with giving up a pet so that it may be better cared for. Most rewarding of all is the look in the eyes of a dog or cat that just knows something special is going on.
Second Chance Animal Shelter was a life-saver for my two Maltese dogs who needed to be spayed.
Living in Connecticut, the cost to do the two dogs was in the thousands and we just couldn’t afford the fees. Plus the CT Vets wanted us to leave the dog’s over-night and they would be unattended. Second Chance Wellness Center in East Brookfield was able to do both dog’s for an affordable price, and my wife and myself were able to bring both dogs up in the morning and return back to Ct with them in the afternoon. Not only did the dogs not have to stay, but they receive the most advance method of spaying available, receiving less than an inch cut. Both dogs had no post-op problems and are doing great. Thanks to Second Chance Animal Shelter my dogs were able to get the care they needed and we were able to afford it. Great Shelter and Wellness Center worth the ride from anywhere, don’t miss out on this amazing place.
Second chance is an awesome no kill shelter. Got my dog Lady there. I also volunteer there. They make you feel good you came to help. The dogs and cats are in a clean and happy place.
Second chance is an awsome no kill shelter. Got my first foster dog and so happy that they are giving me a chance to do this. They are the best.
Second Chance is the best shelter around. They truly do it for the sake of the animals. Some shelters are all about money and the people who work there don't really care about animals. I have read so many horror stories about shelter workers abusing the dogs, not taking care of them etc. but not Second Chance. I got my 6yr old pug there and he is the best thing that has ever happened to me. He came fully vetted up to date on ALL shots even a doggy flu shot and he was neutered and had dental work done all for a decent price. If you are thinking of adopting GO TO SECOND CHANCE and no where else. If you are thinking about volunteering GO TO SECOND CHANCE, if you want to donate money or goods give it to SECOND CHANCE. They truly deserve it and work hard to take care of their animals and they really do care about their well being.
I just LOVE Second Chance Animal Shelter! I started volunteering in July 2011 after my Beloved BRANDY (German Shepherd) passed away Feb. 2011, to help fill my void. I love that they are a NO KILL shelter. They are always there to help and the animals are in good hands! They are great people! I enjoy going there to help the most innocent loveable creatures. They make me soo happy. :)
Second Chance is the best shelter! I have adopted both a yellow lab/golden retriever/shepherd mix dog rescued from Kentucky and a kitten from them. They are a joy and our family would not be complete without them. Second Chance has given so much back to the area communities with their spay/neuter programs and clinics, and their goal is to educate and prevent abandoned and unwanted cat and dog populations. I am proud to be part of the Second Chance family.
I am proud to say that I am a part of the Second Chance family. This is the little shelter that is doing big things. They are in a small town in Central Massachusetts but they are helping animals nationwide. They are an emergency shelter for the ASPCA so they do get dogs from other states in special circumstances. I lost my amazing black lab, Noir, 5 1/2 years ago and my incredible black shepherd, Dubha, 1 1/2 years ago. I never want to go through losing a dog again but I missed having a dog in the house. My solution was to foster dogs for SCAS. I have had several dogs from all circumstances. I had a Pit Bull that was used as a bait dog for dog fighting, a Lab that came from a puppy mill with a broken jaw that had never been set, a Chow that had been in another town's animal control kennel for six months and dogs that were just surrendered by their owners. A lot of these dogs would have been euthanized at most shelters, but not at Second Chance. They are a no kill shelter and take the hard to place cases. They know the best way to stop animal homelessness is to stop the overpopulation, so they opened a Wellness Center that offers low cost spay and neutering. They also offer classes on training and caring for your pet. A well trained dog is much less likely to end up in a shelter. They take in animals that need extensive care and take the time to get them well and find their forever home. The staff and volunteers go above and beyond what is expected because they truly love the animals that come through their doors. They have enriched my life by letting me care for some of their "fur-babies" until their forever homes are found. The saying I hear over and over is "One by one until there are none". They will help animals one by one until there are none that need them. I hope that day comes, but until then I am glad to be able to foster for Second Chance.
In December 2010 there was a news story about a pit bull puppy who was thrown from a moving car. His name is Blake. He now lives with myself, my husband, my two sons and our cat, Winston. The day he was thrown from the car was probably the luckiest day of his life. He met Joe, who (owns?) Second Chance. Joe brought him to the shelter. Blake was so terrified he couldn't even walk, he just crawled on his belly and he shook with fear. By the time my husband and I went to meet him just over a week later he was the happiest dog I had ever seen. This was thanks to the staff at the shelter. We went through the adoption process and our application was reviewed carefully and all our references were checked. When we went ot pick him up everything was prepared. We got a packet of all his records and Joe spent the time to review everything with us and even offered training tips. They were nothing short of professional. We started a FB page for Blake to educate against dog fighting, BSL and pit bull discrimination. (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Blake-Bait-Dog-to-Part-of-the-Family/343235945687492) A lot of the staff is following him and his story. Their dedication and devotion doesn't end when the animal leaves the shelter. The shelter itself is clean and safe. They have meet and great areas and a fenced in area for the dogs to play outside. The best part about the shelter is they are a no-kill! I would never adopt from a place that euthanizes their animals. Finally, to comment on Donna's review, she said they barely had any animals to choose from when she went. This is a shelter, not a pet store. If there are not many animals that is good, that means they have adopted out a lot and now have room to help more needy cats and dogs. My husband and I will be full supporters of Second Chance for many years to come. Highly recommend!!
Second Chance is an awesome place both to volunteer at and adopt from! Our family feels very comfortable going there. And with the low cost spay/neuter program it is even better. They did almost 4,000 snay/neuters in 2011. Holy Cow!! Awesome!!
I dealt with SCAS twice and was extremely disappointed. In September 2010, I adopted a 3-5 yo male black lab mix. First, I was told by the office manager that the dog was ready to go "home". I then received a call saying the dog needed further medical work--but unknown cause. The dog was diagnosed with a yeast infection in both ears by my vet. The dog died two weeks ago-he had leukemia. When I emailed the director, she said she never heard of canine leukemia (?!). I sent a memorial in for the dog the night of his death--still waiting for it to be posted on the web site. First, I get an email they can't see the picture, then they can "read" it. Finally, they tell me to send the memorial in rich text format. However, they didn't tell me that I had to "update" my application until the last email which I received on a Friday night. When I went to the shelter with my 13-1/2 yo female spaniel mix to adopt her another dog on Saturday, I was told I could not take the dog I wanted-I would have to pick him up Monday 10-1 because no one could perform the vet check on Saturday. I was not willing to lose additional wages because of this pick-up time. The inventory of dogs was slim and the only small dog I could find was a 3 yo old male who had been neutered (3) days before. The dog had matted dried fecal matter all over his rump. I had to ask the staff to put something on the dog to transport him. I returned home without the dog and emailed to complain. I was told by the director that the "update" was a vet check. I told her that I would take the dog only if I could pick him up next Saturday so I would have time to adjust the dog to his new home and my other dog. The director would not make that decision. The director's excuses why the dog had matted dried fecal matter on its rump were weak and ridiculous. The dog should have been kept cleaner. For the record, I had a 16 yo male yellow lab mix (died 2010), a 14 yo female spaniel mix (died 2009), and my other 13-1/2 yo spaniel mix, all puppies, that I had neutered and spayed. Additionally, I know someone who adopted a dog from SCAS. Within a few months, the dog was run over by a car and killed. The town did have a "leash" law. SCAS allowed that family to adopt another dog with no application "update". I guess it's not important that adopters obey the laws meant to protect the animals. I've always wanted to adopt a dog versus buying a puppy from a breeder. However, my last experience with SCAS pushed me toward buying a puppy from a breeder. SCAS is not a great non-profit--not by a long shot!
In the past two years I have had the true pleasure of adopting three pets from Second Chance Animal Shelter- one young cat, one older cat and one puppy. These people genuinely CARE about the animals they take in/find homes for. The animals are healthy, happy and loved by a slew of volunteers, the shelter is welcoming and clean and they really DO put the animals first! When you apply to adopt, they check all your references including your vet- to ensure the animal they are placing is going to a good home. They are very proactive on spaying/neutering and no pet they place goes out without this being done. They also offer very low cost pet health care services, pet training classes- again- fully embracing that the bond that is created between the adopted pet and the fortunate new pet owner is a good fit and loving, enriching relationship for both. Before I discovered them- I had looked at puppies at other so called "pet rescue" groups - local places- several in fact- and was saddened and shocked at the condition of the puppies/dogs and cats/kittens- (kennel cough, intestinal issues, etc.) and the conditions these innocent, loving creatures were being kept in. NOT SO at Second Chance! They are INCREDIBLE there. Truly! I have recommended them to many friends and coworkers- and all sing their praises too as their experiences were like mine.
