Mission: The seattle young people's project is a youth-led, adult supported social justice organization that empowers youth (ages 13-18) to express themselves and to take action on the issues that affect their lives.
Programs: Youth leadership: - youth organizing institute (yo): an 8 day social justice institute about youth organizing and social change. Members learn about social justice issues and build analysis, meet other youth, learn about the history of community organizing and learn tools to organize for change. - training for trainers (t4t): t4t is a 2 1/2 day workshop for youth that will prepare them with skills in workshop facilitation, understanding popular education, and breaking down topics like oppression, racism, homophobia, etc. After completing t4t they will become youth trainers with sypp or they can take their skills to other places in the community. - project liberation (project lib): youth led political education trainings. Pl members lead workshops at sypp and in the larger community about racism, homophobia, youth organizing and other topics. Youth who are interested and passionate about a topic will get support in turning that into a workshop or building a curriculum campaigns: - education justice campaign (ejc): youth-led initiative to organize against the school-to-prison pipeline by fighting for education justice and for liberatory discipline policies. That means changing discipline policies in seattle schools and create alternatives that address issues rather than pushing people out of school (aka, the school-to-prison pipeline). - writing circle: coming together to write and have creative space for youth to express themselves. - cop watch: getting together to prevent police brutality and harassment by recording and witnessing the police when they stop people. Coming together to keep our communities safe.
