Mission: The mission of the seattle classic guitar society is to make classical guitar music available to a wide audience in a variety of venues, to present both international and regional artists, to educate the public about classical guitar music, and to give guitar students at every level a chance to learn and perform.
Programs: International concert series scgs brought world class performers to nordstrom hall at the benaroya music hall in downtown seattle for four different concerts. Performers included thibault cauvin, the los angeles guitar quartet (lagq), michael partington, and antigoni goni. Total attendance was 1,260.
frye art museum concerts - scgs sponsored a free informal concert series at a local museum. Four programs were presented featuring up and coming guitarists. Artists included travis johnson, martha masters, mark teicholz, and lily afshar. These programs were presented free to the public in an effort to give exposure to the classical guitar. Total attendance was 534.
master classes - scgs presented four master classes with our visiting international artists (noted above). In these classes, selected students received personal lessons from the artists in a class setting. Non-performers were allowed to audit and ask questions. Total attendance was 128.
school outreach program - we funded four local professional performers and teachers to give 48 sessions/performances in various school and community settings, with a total audience of 2,060.
guitar orchestra - scgs was proud to sponsor a guitar orchestra, which varied in size from around 15-35 members, with space for various levels of ability. Scgs provided funds for rent for rehearsal space at a local community center and for copying music. This performance group is an ongoing entity that is open to scgs members and non-members. The guitar orchestra gave 12 performances at various functions throughout the year, to a combined audience of 765.
guitar festivals - scgs co-sponsored two guitar festivals, one at pacific lutheran university, and one at the university of washington. The festivals provided opportunities for guitarists and guitar enthusiasts of various levels to participate in guitar classes (actively participating or auditing), and to hear performances. Total attendance for the two festivals was 155.
guitar soundings - this is the bi-monthly newsletter of scgs. It features upcoming events of interest to our members in the puget sound region, reviews of recordings, and other items of interest. Six issues per year are mailed to all members, and made available to the general public at some of our events. Total printed per issue was about 350 or 2100 total for the year.
social events - scgs provides opportunities for our members to meet each other and visiting artists at functions such as our annual holiday concert, and at monthly open-mic meetings held at the phinney ridge neighborhood center and in west seattle. We feel that it is important for our members to have the chance to become involved in the society at any level that they choose. We sponsored 18 events, with a total attendance of 499.
