Mission: Sea is a global teaching, learning and research community dedicated to the exploration, understanding and stewardship of marine and maritime environments. Sea empowers students with life-changing sea voyages of scientific and cultural discovery, academic rigor and personal growth. Our sea semester program features an interdisciplinary curriculum and dynamic leadership development experience - on shore and at sea aboard tall ships.
Programs: 177 undergraduates participated in sea semester programs: boston university accredited study abroad programs focused on the ocean environment. Sea semester students enrolled from 117 different colleges and universities. Over 50% received some form of financial assistance; of those, 95% received aid directly from sea. Students began their studies on our campus in woods hole, massachusetts and then joined one of our two 134-foot sail training vessels for a sailing research experience in the atlantic, pacific, or caribbean. While at sea, students acted as full members of the sailing crew and scientific team, operating all aspects of the vessel while completing self-designed research projects in a variety of topics.
55 students participated in sea high school summer programs, 3-week programs designed to offer an interdisciplinary approach to the marine environment through science, history, literature, and nautical science. Seminars focused on the coastal marine environment around cape cod. Sea high school summer seminars were attended by students from over 40 different high schools.
four collaberative programs were held with 4 other institutions in which students from those institutions participated in 9 to 30 day programs designed to offer an interdisciplinary approach to the marine environment through oceanography, maritime studies, and nautical science. Such programs were held in the atlantic, pacific, and caribbean.
