Mission: Schoolyard farms creates healthier communities by teaching kids how to grow nutritious food that goes from their schoolyard farm to their plate. They do this by building farms on unused schoolyards that serve as outdoor classrooms and as sources of fresh produce for the community.
Programs: Schoolyard farms served 1,324 students through their food and farms education program. 295 students from candy lane elementary received 12 on-site garden lessons, with each student averaging 10. 35 hours on the farm. Over 700 students tasted nine local fruits and vegetables through a monthly tasting program that lets students explore the diversity of our local produce. Ten students from new urban high school spent 12 hours working on their school farm while receiving service learning credits. 8,708 pounds of fruits and vegetables were harvested and distributed to 68 community supported agriculture (csa) members over the course of 20 weeks. 110 pounds of produce was donated to the community. 335 students spent an average of 4. 5 hours on the farm during field trips.
59 1st-6th graders attended schoolyard farms summer camp where they spent all day on the farm learning where their food comes from, as well as how to grow and cook it, increasing the likelihood that theyll eat fresh vegetables in the future. 8 of those youth attended camp more than once. 6 low-income youth received a scholarship to camp.
