Mission: TO NURTURE, SUPPORT AND DEVELOP OUR COMMUNITY THROUGH WHOLESOME PROGRAMS THAT ADDRESS THE ACADEMIC, MORAL, CULTURAL, HEALTH, AND RECREATIONAL NEEDS OF OUR CHILDREN, YOUTH AND THEIR FAMILIES IN THE HILL DISTRICT AND METROPOLITAN PITTSBURGH.
Target demographics: The Schenley Heights Community Development Program (SHCDP) was established in 1995 to provide an alternative to crime and other socially destructive activities that too often plague inner city, low-income communities. The organization's target population is Pittsburgh's urban youth, most whom dwell in the Hill District community. Through a variety of successful programs, over 350 participants ages 3-18 and their families are exposed to various activities that promote academic and life success as well as activities that encourage behavioral and physical wellness
Geographic areas served: SHCDP serves hundreds of inner-city youth between the ages of 3-18. Historically, the majority of participants come to the program from the Hill District, West Oakland, and Uptown communities of Pittsburgh, however, children from all over the city and Allegheny County have also participated.
Programs: After school tutorial and enrichment program (a-step) provides academic and social support to children pre-k through 5th grade. A-step serves 100 children with a focus on reading, writing, speaking and listening, mathematics, and behavorial management.
the summer enrichment program (sep) engages participants from ages 5-14 in academic enrichment, exposure to the arts, participation in sports and recreational activities, involvement in community service projects and numerous other experiences that encourage them to explore their talents.
