In August 2015, (one month after losing our precious almost 13 year old furboy) I saw a cute little puppy available for adoption at Save A Pet Port Jefferson...he was rescued from a high kill shelter in Texas where he would have been euthanized...he was now safe at Save A Pet and ready for adoption...I filled out the application and my husband & I drove to see the puppy. Our Vet and our references were checked and we were approved to take Jessee (formerly Asher) home on Aug 28 2015...he is a loving, super smart little furboy...and we are delighted to be his "mommy & daddy" We are very grateful for all you do saving & caring for all the animals...Thank You so very much
Very easy to work ,they love all the animals, they get excellent care. I’ve never had a problem at all. Dory is the best!
Save-a-Pet has played a role in helping so many animals - but for me most importantly brought me to my soulmate little old man who was by my side for 17 years. I miss him everyday but have Save-a-Pet to thank for all of our memories!
I will always be grateful for this amazing organization! I found a beautiful little kitty that I took in but I already had three rescues and wasn’t able to take in a 4th as I live in a one bedroom condo and wasn’t supposed to have more than two pets.
Save A Pet was so kind and caring to accept this sweet boy and within days he was adopted out by a wonderful family!
Around 2002, I decided I wanted a dog, in particular, a bull terrier. I found Save a Pet on the internet, and found McKenzie, a mini Bill Terrier.
Dorie found that McKenzie's real name was Lucy, and she was an escape artist. Her owners didn't her back.
We talked for a while, and I decided I really wanted her.
I traveled to the Bridgeport ferry and went to Port Jefferson Station.
Dorie picked me up and I met Lucy. It was love and first sight. All these years later, I remember that day. I had Lucy for 7 years, until she passed from cancer.
I rescued Bella, another mini, right away, and loved her until March of this year. 14 awesome years with her. I am now fostering Prince, another Bull Terrier. I will be adopting him very soon.
I have Dorie to thank for my 20+ years of being loved and rescued. And to Save a Pet, who saved and rescued thousands of dogs...and people, like me❤️
The animal shelter is kept up beautifully, and the animals are happy and well-cared for. Finding homes for dogs on euth lists is a never-ending task for Dori and her staff.
MOST AMAZING animal rescue you will ever find. Dori is absolutely the most kindest soul you will ever meet. She LOVES animals so much she lives, eats, sleeps, breathes to protect animals of all kinds. Thank you for everything!
Save A Pet is such an amazing organization that help pave the pathway for unwanted dogs and cats to have the best life they could have ever imagined. I adopted Pearl through Save A Pet and was very impressed with the adoption process. This rescue truly strives to rehabilitate and save animals that are in their care. If you want to adopt a pet in their care or donate to their amazing rescue you definitely will not be disappointed. I love Save A Pet!! I cannot thank you enough for giving me the best pup ever, my precious Pearls!
I have fostered for them and adopted from them. They have helped me with multiple kittens having them spayed/neutered and adopted out. I can’t say enough about the dedication and commitment that is put into each animal that comes through their doors!
Save A Pet is the rescue that cares. They never give up helping homeless animals and finding them loving homes. The owner,, Dori, continually fights for animal rights. Save A Pet truly is the Voice of the Voiceless. I have adopted 2 of my fur babies and 1 grandpup from Save A Pet. The adoption process, handled by Sue, was smooth and loving. I recommend Save A Pet to all who want to adopt and/or donate.
Save A Pet back in 2006 gave me a pup who my daughter named Nikki. They told me she was American Eskimo/Cocker Spaniel. She passed in 2017 October 25 :( She was my heart and soul pup. Never lost her puppy face . My love for her was so deep. She lived in Brentwood at first. When my parents died we had to move and of course where we went, Nikki went. Even spent a year in Florida ! I am very grateful to Save A Pet for allowing me to adopt my baby “seal” I’ll always be grateful to Save A Pet!
I have adopted from Save-A-Pet twice. The first was a senior Lab/Pit mix named Rocky. They were so good to him and only wanted the best for him. They always asked how he was doing and I felt they still loved him.
Our second guy is a little Yorkie/Poodle/Westie mix. They got his character so right! He really does love being held and is a fun lil guy.
I really feel that the rescue wants the best for each creature in their care.
Started volunteering at Save a Pet 2 years ago and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Everyone there is so caring and always puts the welfare of the dogs and cats as the top priority.
This is a FABULOUS establishment. Our president is there for any animal brought our direction. Everyone there is so caring and has a genuine love for each and every one of the animals. Dori does such an amazing job and goes out of her way to save dying animals and stays with them at all hours tending to their every need. Such a fantastic woman and an amazing animal shelter. I absolutely love volunteering here, I am here almost 5 days a week! I couldn't be happier :)
I joined Save-A-Pet as a volunteer in the summer of 2001. It was a fledgling organization at the time, having been operated out of the home of its founder, Dori Scofield. I have seen many changes over the years, but one thing remains the same: this organization's total dedication to improving the lives of homeless cats and dogs (and, at times, other animals). Being a volunteer here has opened up many aspects of the animal rescue world to me. Among my favorite things to do (aside from helping with the dogs at the shelter) are outside events at local venues (such as libraries); these give me the opportunity to educate the public on shelter adoption as well as responsible animal care. I also have been enriched by my involvement in participating in, as well as coordinating, the pet assisted therapy program. My two sweet girls adopted from SAP are pictured below. Both have crossed the Rainbow Bridge, leaving me grateful for the opportunity to have had them in my life.
Review from Guidestar
I have 4 cats all which I have adopted from Save-a-Pet. After adopting the first cat, I had such a good experience, that I decided I wanted to volunteer there in my spare time. Well needless to say about 5 years later, a bunch of fosters and 3 foster failures, I’m hooked! I ❤️ everyone at Save-a-Pet, they are the true definition of rescuers and I’m so happy to be part of the fam.
I have been volunteering with Save-A-Pet for about five years now. Dori, the founder and CEO is a loving person who cares about her animals and the people who help her. She does everything she can to provide them with care and love, and its inspiring to watch. Save-A-Pet has a great staff, as well as a selection of animals you can tell are truly cared for. Dori and her staff go above and beyond to make sure each animal goes to a great home, whether they're going to new families or families who have adopted in the past. There is a reason that people who have adopted from her in the past come back around!
Saveapet Animal Rescue and founder Dori Scofield care for orphaned animals with remarkable integrity, love and compassion. Saveapet truly cares about each orphan that comes through the door. They provide the best care possible to every soul they can. Miracles happened here. Everyday Saveapet works non stop for these babies. They are more than a shelter. They are Outreach, Rescue, Advocacy and Community.
Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue is by far the most caring organization when it comes to animal welfare. Everyone there truly cares about the animals in their care. I adopted my pit bull from there almost 6 years ago. She was saved from a horrible situation. I am so thankful to this organization for saving her and her siblings!
We got our little girl from Save A Petand we love her and them! The whole process was flawless and they were professional, friendly and supportive. When we are ready to add to our family we will definitely be going back to Save A Pet!
Save a pet is literally the best rescue i have had the pleasure of dealing with. As a professional dog trainer I have clients asking for rescues needing homes. I always refer them to save a pet where they take the time to match the perfect dog to the perfect home. They thoroughly screen their adopters as well as their dogs to ensure the very best match. Save a pet is top notch caring for whats best for both potential adopters as well as the dogs in their rescue. They pull locally as well as a southern division that aides municipal shelters in the south with resources as well as matching dogs with homes up north. I cant say enough wonderful things about this rescue!
Dori & everyone at Sav A Pet truly love & care about each & every animal they have. I’ve fosterd many kittens ( kept 3, & adopted a senior as well).
Sav A Pet has been there with any & all medical issues including surgery on one of my kittens.
If you’re looking to adopt go to Sav A Pet!!!
So many people and organizations call themselves "rescue"--but the concept has changed drastically over the past several years. While intentions are good, I'm sure, so many adoptions are done in parking lots, at highway exits, and with little to no adoption process to ensure the lifelong safety of each adopted animal. Likewise, it seems like many rescues have the cutest puppies with not a PitBill to be seen. I'm not criticizing the good work of these people, but when I think of true "rescue"-- the ugly, tragic, in-the-trenches, hard-to-adopt--rescued animals, I put Save-A-Pet at the top of the list. I have adopted my companions from Save-A-Pet for the past 25 years because I know what the day-to-day life is like for the SAP rescuers and volunteers who are devoted to this cause. With all my companion pets, there was a back story that nearly destroyed my faith in humankind. But Save-A-Pet took them in, gave them the care and devotion they needed in order to move on tho the lives they so profoundly deserved. They were the "brown paper-bag dogs", the misunderstood Bully breeds, the old, the disabled, the traumatized... and every single one that came in to my life because of Save-A-Pet has made my life complete. What I especially appreciate is that SAP is committed to their adopted pets for LIFE! They supported me when I had questions, and while I would NEVER have given any of my fur kids back, I appreciated that they have a strict policy that no adopted pet should ever end up anywhere other than back at their shelter should a situation ever change.
Today, I have my 90 pound AmStaff, Ani. She came into my life when everything else had fallen apart. She is my savior, my confidante, my therapy, my joy, and my constant companion. Every day, I pray for all the animals in the world who are alone, scared, abused, neglected, and unwanted. I pray that Save-A-Pet finds them because once there, all that's left of those tragic lives is love...never to be alone again.
No words exist that can adequately describe my experience with Dori and her staff when I connected with my new rescue buddy Moe. After 4+ hours in a car they welcomed me with smiles and a parade of loving and excited furry friends. To accommodate my cat allergies they introduced me to each dog, one by one, in their wonderful courtyard with benches, shade and secure fencing to keep all safe. When I met Moe, (Carlito at the time), I knew he was the heartwarming friend I needed to spend the rest of his/my life with. Knowing that I was making the same ride home after a brief rest, they expedited the process. I then had a wonderful meal with my beautiful sister and headed home with Moe. If you're considering an organization to meet and rescue a pet, please give Save-A-Pet a visit. Dori has a heart made of gold. My deepest gratitude, Alan.
My name is Chris C I started volunteering upon retirement approximately 8yrs ago l love being a part of the Save A Pet family They care so much about the animals I look forward to coming in to help with whatever the new problem is. Helping people who need to surrender there animal for a lost loved one or loosing there home. Dori is a wonderful caring person with a big heart Always wants to rescue all in need but unfortunately unable to get to help All in need
The love & compassion shown by Save A Pet is beyond a typical rescue. They do not give up on any animal. Save A Pet sees every rescue to the end, even if it takes years. Save A Pet is truly the voice of the voiceless. The folks there are Angels on Earth.
Without the help of the passionate and caring people at Save-A-Pet I would not have found my best friend. A little over four years ago I rescued my German Shepherd. I am so glad I came to the shelter and chose adoption. The people at Save-A-pet were so helpful and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.
