I grew up in this organization, I always felt loved and welcomed no matter what and the staff was always amazing no matter what.
Both of my children were able to build friendships and bonds with kids they would not have otherwise crossed paths with. I was also so grateful that my daughter was able to be exposed to quality STEM programs at a cost I could afford. Sarah Heinz House did an amazing job and my kids are already looking forward to next time! Thank you!!
when you really think of the word priceless, Sarah Heinz House is what comes to mind! The amount of experiences and lifelong friendships you create here is worth every penny spent!
I grew up with Sarah Heinz House in my life everyday! If I never found them my life would not be the same. It gives the youth a place to flourish no matter the disability, home life, and neighborhood! It is truly a safe haven for everyone!
Huge influence on my future life choices! Provided a safe and caring community after school and in the summers. I’ve been given many great opportunities from The Sarah Heinz House and will always cherish the memories I had from being there!
Sarah Heinz House is a place of feeling like home, staff and volunteers are welcoming and caring. I have seen great things come from those who have attended "The House".
Sarah Heinz House is more than just a boys and girls club. My daughter said it best that Sarah Heinz House is her home. It's a place where kids can be themselves, make friends and experience new things. The staff and volunteers are what makes this place feel like home, a safe and nurturing environment. I was a member when I was growing up, my oldest daughter went and my youngest is still there. It is their home away from home. The programs and camps are amazing experiences for kids from preschool to high school.
I wouldn’t trade my 7 years at Sarah Heinz House for the world! They provide kids with so many opportunities to grow and learn different life skills, and the staff has always done their best to help each person individually. Some of the people that I have admired most in the world are from here, and my biggest regret is that I don’t think I’ll ever be able to fully repay Sarah Heinz House for the help that they gave me to grow as a person during my time there.
My nieces have been going to this summer camp for over 15 years! My oldest niece has even become a camp counselor! They always have fun and can’t wait to start their summer off right!
Our kids have been attending the SHH Residents Camp for years and it's a highlight of their summer. The staff is great and it's a wonderful resource for the community.
Sarah Heinz House is always there for the children that attend. It is a warm and welcoming place for all kids to go and make new friends as well as just hang out. They really helped me in my time of need when I was younger and still help with my depression to this day. If your looking fo an after school activity for your children to do, I highly recommend Sarah Heinz Hoise.
Being a kid from the Northside of Pittsburgh going to Sarah Heinz House was definitely a shining spot in my childhood. They care about kids.
Sarah Heinz House is a great place for kids of all ages to young adults. I was a member as a kid/young adult and then volunteered for years after being a member. I have great memories that will last a lifetime as well as lifelong friendships that were started many years ago. I highly recommend Sarah Heinz House as a place for our youth to flourish and grow.
I walk in the doors of Sarah Heinz House when I was 7 years old and 58 years later I am still at Sarah Heinz House. It is the Greatest Place on Earth. It would take a book to tell all of the wonderful experiences I have had. I will tell you that of everything it has done for me it has given me my Big Wonderful Loving and Supporting 2nd Family that I can always count on.
Sarah Heinz House provides exceptional after-school and summer programming for our area's youth. Their staff is amazing...they provide exceptional role models for the youth that they serve.
Between regular programming, robotics, and camp my kiddo has spent a ton of time at Sarah Heinz house and he has loved every second of it. I have loved knowing that he is learning life skills, camaraderie, and robotics in a safe and fun place. My younger one is making the leap from preschool programs to big kid programs this year and we are all so excited.
Spent 8 summer here growing up! Sarah Heinz House helped me grow into the person and leader I am today
My children have been going to SHH for summer camp for the last few years, and have really enjoyed the experience, between swimming, making friends, doing robotics. There are plenty of opportunities for enrichment. This year, Heinz House offered more flexible scheduling, which allowed us to participate as full members. It's early yet, but so far, for the few times I've picked them up, I've picked up happy children. They love it. They are being active, making friends, and gaining independence. It is a wonderful place and an asset to our community. Thank you, SHH!!
I have been a donor to Sarah Heinz House for many years now. I have watched young people grow into amazing young adults with the help of the caring staff. Sarah Heinz House is a safe haven for many children.
Sarah Heinz House has made a significant impact on my life both as a child and as an adult. This wonderful institution played a vital role in making me into the person I am today by teaching me the values of cooperation, community, generosity, dedication, and communication, amongst many others. Whether it was the guidance of the volunteers or the bonds that I made with fellow members, I always knew that I had a place at Heinz House with people who cared. Into my adult life, Heinz House has continued to make an impact on my life as I have become a volunteer. I still look forward to all of my time that I get to spend at the house and the ability to make an impact on an organization that is such an important addition to the city of Pittsburgh and the North Side.
Sarah Heinz House has been providing a safe place for children to laugh, learn and lead for over 100 years. It is a second home to many at risk children and a place where they are accepted for who they are, as they are. Here they are safe to be themselves secure in the knowledge that they are being surrounded by caring volunteers and staff. Children here are free to explore, learn and grow in ways they would otherwise not be able to experience. It has and continues to positively change young lives in our region. I am proud to be a part of supporting the organization and its mission.
Every year I am more and more impressed by the quality of the staff and services at Sarah Heinz House. In addition to its core after school Boys and Girls Club programs, the Club provides services to the elderly through Silver Sneakers, to the very young through summer day camp and swimming lessons, and to a variety of other populations from throughout the city. Heinz House and its staff are truly remarkable assets for the city of Pittsburgh.
When I was asked to serve on the Board of Sarah Heinz House, an organization I did not know, I was not confident that I would be able to commit the appropriate amount of time given other obligations. From my first visit to "The Club", however, I realized that I simply could not say "no" to the request. The "vibe" of SHH is overwhelming - from the energy of the kids to the commitment of the enormous number of volunteers to the integrity and passion of the staff. Once you've been there, you simply want to contribute whatever you can to help such a special place. Of particular note is the staff's focus on continuous improvement and desire to make a great institution even better. Their professionalism surpasses that of most institutions with which I have had experience, from small companies to large corporations.
I only wish I had known about Sarah Heinz House when my children were in school! I recently began to work at SHH and I found myself amazed! Not only is the staff warm, welcoming and engaging; but the children were even more so. The values of leadership, learning and laughter are evident each day and by each member, volunteer and staff. I feel privileged and honored to say that I work here. When I tell people were I work; most times I get the "hey I went there" or "what a great place" and I get a thrill knowing that I am a part of something larger and helping SHH continue its mission to brighten and impact the lives of our children.
SHH is one of the most impactful organizations for youth development in the Pittsburgh area. Their motto is laugh, learn, play and the children that attend live by these pillars everyday.
The Sarah Heinz House provides opportunities and experiences for kids to learn and grow. During the open house last year my family and I met a few students that attended the After-School activities as well as the summer camp. Their testimonials of what the Sarah Heinz House meant to them drove me to get involved. They discussed the fun, educational and amazing programs offered to them after school and the camp in the summer. The facility itself is amazing. I had driven past it multiple times and until the tour I had no idea the size and offerings it has with space, gyms, swimming pools and fitness center. The Sarah Heinz House is one of the best kept secrets in Pittsburgh and I can only hope this testimonial provides some insight for more to help participate in their success.
My father was a Board member of Sarah Heinz House in the 1970's and 1980's. I remember his comments about the fine work that SHH did. I became reconnected to SHH earlier this year, and was reminded of my father comments. Meeting the Executive Director, other staff members, Board members, and program participants of SHH confirmed for me that the fine work my father commented on continues to this day. My wife and I are honored to have become financial supporters. Rob Spicher
The position of SHH on the north side of Pittsburgh in a neighborhood with many issues makes it a potential haven for all the kids and families they serve from near by communities. Their programs enrich both body and mind and cater to all. This non-profit with a long history of community service is a gem in our region and a true oasis for many kids. Mike Kauffelt.
Several years ago, my colleague and I started raising funds for children from an underprivileged school district in Colliers, WV. It broke my heart to see some of these kids without enough food, with no notebooks or pencils for school. We started a vending service in our office and used the proceeds to purchase clothes, school supplies, snacks, etc. for the kids and have been doing so every year. The feeling of making a difference in their lives is unparalleled. When I heard about the Sarah Heinz House and what they do for children in similar situations, I was immediately drawn to the organization and wanted to play a part in aiding their mission. Once I joined, I was amazed by the intelligence, drive and kindness in each and every one of the children who come through SHH. It's sincerely an incredible organization that I'm more than proud to be a part of. SHH is a vital outlet for so many kids – impacting their lives in the best way so they can achieve everything they dream of.
I have been involved with Sarah Heinz House for about a year now and am very impressed with the work of the organization. They show a deep interest in developing the childrens' skills in teamwork, responsibility, discipline and respect. Shh is an outlet for kids to learn outside of their daily life activities. SHH cares and helps cultivate youth into becoming respectable members of the community.
I attended summer camp there a few summers when I was in elementary school. The counselors were great - they were nice to all of us and made the days fun. The climbing wall in the pool was awesome.
I had the honor of working with the Sarah Heinz House staff and the 911th Air Wing to conduct a drill that would keep SHH students safe. I continue to be highly impressed with the SHH team, its students and the entire program. SHH delivers a valuable service to our region's youths: helping them to grow up to be productive, safe, healthy and strong people who can make a positive contribution to the region!
This organization and its programs are indispensable to our region's youths. It has a rich history and a team of leaders who possess high integrity. Outstanding role models for young people.
This place truly molded me into the woman I am today. Words could not express my gratitude for all of the opportunities in leadership development, beginners employment, and friendship that this organization had given me. It was here that I felt comfortable to find my voice and be a leader in my community. This is arguably one of the best investments you can give to your child.
Sarah Heinz House Association (SHH) delivers a highly valuable service to our community! The team is outstanding, providing very positive programs to our region's youths. This is a dynamic, energetic organization that fulfills its mission each and every day!
Sarah Heinz House delivers outstanding mentoring and creative programs to the youths in our region! I am so impressed by the work they do for families!
Girls Camp Rocks! Camp is one of those experiences that will last a lifetime.
The staff at Sarah Heinz House are an amazing group of people that are very dedicated to serving the youth of the region. I greatly enjoyed working with the staff and was so impressed with everything they do.
Love this place!
Everyday I get to experience the benefit that Sarah Heinz House offers to the members and families they serve.
Every day, I look forward to 'goin dahn to Heinz, n'at!' : )
I am continuously amazed at what the staff/volunteers accomplish and the relationships they form with our members and their family's.
This is not just an organization of employees/volunteers. It is a community of people coming together, for the sole purpose of putting kids first.
I've been a board member for just about 2 years. I cannot express the dedication of the staff and their impact. The loyalty created by the programs here displays the significant role this organization has with the community. I'm so proud to be associated with the House.
I'm inspired by what this organization represents. Though I wish I had been a member of the house as a child, I am proud to be involved with Sarah Heinz House today to witness firsthand (and hopefully contribute to) the immeasurable impact it has on Pittsburgh's youth.
Lives are changed by the folks at Sarah Heinz House!! Keep up the good work.
Sarah Heinz House takes great pride in providing a trusted environment that welcomes and challenges students of all ages and provides a social and educational framework for them to become successful members of their community. The staff and volunteers are absolutely dedicated to maintaining and enhancing that environment, which is one of the reasons why Sarah Heinz House has become such an important part of students' lives for more than 100 years.
I've been a Board member for Heinz House for almost 10 years and continue to be amazed by the quality of staff, programs and members, in particular how that quality persists over time and across changes of staff and membership. There is a spirit to the organization that is passed on from person to person, generation to generation. It is a pleasure to serve them.
I am a eight year volunteer with this organization that provides a safe place for children after school hours, on Saturday and camping experiences during the summer. Sarah Heinz provides recreational,STEM,leadership, homework help and mentoring for children from several school districts in Pittsburgh,Pa.
My son,Lawyer , attended ten years at Sarah Heinz. Sarah Heinz help develop him into the man he is today. I give praise to this organization, club leaders, and the volunteers who had impact on his life. Lawyer is now a teacher and is involve with children that live in his community.
I really can't express in words how much Sarah Heinz House has changed lives. Being a member at Heinz House has given many opportunities to become someone. Sarah Heinz House has become many people second home and second family. At Sarah Heinz House you feel safe and welcomed when you step through the doors. I will never be able to thank this organization enough for all they have done for me. They teach the real meaning of happiness, to take risk and step outside of comfort zones. Sarah Heinz House has given me long-lasting relationship. The staff and members have inspired me to go out and change the world. If it wasn't for this great organization I would not be where I am today. This organization has helped me find out who I am. Sarah Heinz House offers so many programs such as dance, swimming, robotics, leagues, cooking classes, sewing, and so many more. I would find myself at Heinz House from 3:30 till 9:00 everyday, volunteering, hanging with the staff and members, catching up with my friends, and making new friends. When your apart of Sarah Heinz House you feel something so great you just never want to leave. I grew up at Sarah Heinz House, and I couldn't be any happier. When your having a bad day this organization is always there to cheer you up. Most people feel very well appreciated at this place and that's not something you get to feel everywhere. Sarah Heinz House has brought unimaginable joy to life. I feel like a better person every day because of this amazing organization. I am so grateful I am apart of something not every kid gets to be apart of. At Sarah Heinz House I have made so many memories that will last a lifetime. My future started with Sarah Heinz House and so can yours.
Sarah Heinz house is a great asset to our community. Not just recently, but over the last many years! I hear wonderful stories from my aunts and my mother, who all went to the Sarah Heinz house Camp when they were little, some of them over 50 years ago! I've been to a few fundraisers there, as well as have seen the way that the kids are excited to be involved...I can't wait to enroll my children in the Sarah Heinz House programming someday!
I could never thank this organization, and the people inside of it, enough for how much of an impact they have had on my life. This place gives every member an opportunity to learn something new, a safe environment to take risks, step out of their comfort zone, step in the spotlight, take that leadership role, and unlock their potential to grow into responsible and mature individuals. There are so many different activities to take advantage of SHH that it is hard to find something that wouldn't catch your interest. From swimming, to dance, to sports, to robotics, to art, to hanging out with friends, to playing games, to media lab, to working on your education, and to positive youth development programs SHH really tries to make sure you can have a taste of it all. I know that for several of my peers, and myself included, Sarah Heinz House quickly become our second home. We were able to create a small family, separate from our ones at home who understood and could relate to how much they loved attending Sarah Heinz House. I would find myself at SHH from right after school at 3:45 until 9 at night, going in and out of programs or trying to catch a few moments to talk to my friends. Sarah Heinz House is primarily responsible for inspiring me to continue to work with children after I graduate. The staff and volunteers have left a memorable impact on me, one that I only hope to have the privilege to make on another person's life. Sarah Heinz House enabled me to figure out who I was, to develop my leadership skills in an area I felt comfortable and has given me opportunities that I would never have been able to take advantage of had I not been a member. This organization is truly one of the most affordable, influential, safe, diverse, and amazing places I think that the northside of Pittsburgh has to offer for children in grades 1-12th. And this review only scratches the surface of the dynamics of what life with a membership at SHH has the potential to do to you.
Sarah Heinz House has touched four generations of my family. From my grandfather who served in WW1 , my mother, myself, my siblings, and to our children.
It has always and still is a huge part of my life, I am proud to carry it forward with a passion to serve the next generation to experience and benefit all the organization has to offer. Where else can a child come 6 days a week and swim, play, laugh, learn, lead and just "have fun".
I have been a part of Sarah Heinz House for over 20 years. I should really say that Sarah Heinz House has been a part of me for over 20 years. As a member, it gave me confidence when I needed it most and allowed me to meet some truly amazing people, many of whom I am still friends with today. As a volunteer of SHH, it allowed me the opportunity to give back to a great organization that offered me so much. I am forever a "Heinz Houser"!
I was a member and volunteer here for many years, and SHH impacted my life positively in many ways. It promotes strong character, good values and allowed me to form many long-lasting relationships. It truly is a wonderful place for youth. In fact, I am honored and proud to share the tradition with my children who participate in the tot programs and plan on enrolling them as members when old enough. It is much more than an after-school program, it is a second home!
Sarah Heinz House has opened their doors to provide our students an amazing learning environment during the school day. Their team has been very welcoming and accommodating to our school staying true to their philosophy of serving the youth above all else.
A great organization!
I am proud to be associated with this organization for over 30 years. I can honestly say that it has and continues to mold me into the man I am. As a member I gained so much from the programs, friendships and mentors the "House" provide me with. As staff I still continue to benefit from all Sarah Heinz House has to offer. I feel as though I have come full circle... As a child I came and learned from the adults and now as an adult, I come to learn form the kids!
I've recently became involved with Sarah Heinz House Association due to me being the Community Outreach Coordinator for the Pittsburgh Pirates. There are many great things I could say about them, but the one that hits home with me is the environment and opportunities they provide our local youth. They have a great, clean, safe facility and endless programs to support our youth throughout their adolescent years.
Good leaders are trailblazers, making a path for others to follow. Great leaders, however, can inspire the children to reach higher, dream bigger, and achieve greater. Perhaps the most important leadership skill you can develop is the ability to provide inspiration to the children that attend the Sarah Heinz House. If you inspire them to reach for the stars, they just might bring you back the moon. This is what my children where taught from the staff and volunteers here at SHH. I am grateful for the new family we have gotten as a place we can all call home and be inspired by everyday a child opens the door and enters this unique organization. Today I feel my children are always striving to be a role model and are carrying on the values that they learned here at SHH
I recently had the opportunity to take an in-depth tour of the Sarah Heinz House Association as part of an article that I was writing. I was completely blown away by every aspect of it. The staff is tremendously talented and caring, the facilities are absolutely beautiful, the programming is fun, interesting, and educational, and the kids and teens were amazing. I wish I had grown up in the area so that I could've gone there growing up! Instead, I'm looking forward to taking advantage of opportunities to volunteer at this amazing facility.
Heinz House, as members from my era called it. I was an active member there for 10 years and it influenced me tremendously, shaping my values and providing a pathway to developing leadership and collaborative skills that I use on an every day basis today. The program exposed you to many different types of activities - from sports to public speaking to running events and leading a tent-full of campers. The greatest strength of Heinz House is the path the develop for you - as a young member you get introduced to structure while having a ton of fun - both during regular activities and at summer camp. As you continue through the program, you quickly begin to value the concept of service, responsibility and the duty for assuming a leadership role in helping the younger members. This institution carries many multi-generational families - including mine - and the one common trait every member possesses after being a member there is the idea of respect and servitude for "the House".
The staff members and volunteers are excellent - they really care about the kids and they are committed to every member becoming the best they can be. Sarah Heinz House provides a place for young people to get together, have fun and at the same time develop social and educational skills.
I AM NOW 71 YEARS OLD, STILL REMEMBERING FUN , HAPPY MOMENTS AT SARAH HEING HOUSE, INCLUDING THE BEST SUMMER CAMP. BECAUSE OF MY GREAT MEMORIES THERE, I TRY TO DONATE IN MEMORY OF MY FATHER CHARLES PFEIFFER, AND MY BROTHER RICH PFIEFFER WHENEVER I CAN. I WILL ASSURE YOU HAVE CREATED GREAT STRONGER PEOPLE BECAUSE OF YOUR CAMP AND ACTIVITIES . I DO ESPECIALLY REMEMBER DAISY AND MIDGE TWO OF MY MENTORS AT HEINZ'S.THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO FOR KIDS. CHARLENE PFEIFFER MARUSICH
All three of my sons have attended Sarah Heinz House. They grew, learned, and developed skills. They also learned how to help and mentor younger members. I also teach swim lessons and enjoy the times that I get to spend with the students, I love teaching a skill that will last them a lifetime.
I have been a member since I was a migit and i have considered it my second home since then.
I was a member, am a volunteer, was a parent of a member, and am also part time staff. I love what Sarah Heinz House represents to me, my family, and to the community. Until you become part of this organization and learn first hand everything it has to offer you can't fully appreciate the difference they can make and have been making for more than a century.
"It takes a village to raise a child." Bob, Jen, Charlie, Dave, Chris, Chuck, Lynn, Cathy, Mr. P., Val, Paul, Kyle, Dan, Gary, Cindy, Mr. and Mrs. Basil, Miss Kitty, Miss Dee and Mr. Bill, Phyllis, Jim, Gary and the hundreds of others that have touched our lives, Those mentioned are the staff, volunteers and Board members of Sarah Heinz House that have helped in raising our two boys. Without each of you (and all of those not mentioned) Liam and Nick would not be who they are today. THANK YOU.
Review from The Pittsburgh Foundation
20+ years ago I was introduced to SHH by my best friend and subsequently became a member and volunteer. Initially I thought SHH was just a place to go however, many of the experiences and opportunities I had while being a member and volunteer have shaped me into the person I am today. Throughout high school SHH became my second home. It truly was and is a great place to learn, grow and build relationships. SHH is a special resource for youth/adolescent development. Programs encouraged us to think, explore, and be responsible, to try new things, to be creative and accepting of others. And….they were fun!
Sarah Heinz House has been a part of life since I was born. My grandfather was a former program director and executive director there for many, many years. My parents met there as members of Sarah Heinz House. I too was a member of Sarah Heinz House, where I took dance classes and attended their summer camp program in Ellwood City. Now all these years later my daughter is in going into her 5th year as a member of Sarah Heinz House and her first year as a junior volunteer. The best thing I can save about Sarah Heinz House is that after all these years, the same core values and rules still exist and are followed to this day. You learn respect from the moment you walk in the door of Sarah Heinz House and are asked to take your hat off. However Sarah Heinz House has not failed to keep up with the times either - now offering programs such as day camp, robotics, media lab and silver sneakers. These are just some of the wonderful addtions made to the Sarah Heinz House over the years. Sarah Heinz House has always been a safe and fun place for school kids of all ages to go. Everyone is made to feel like they are part of one big happy family while they are down there. The staff and volunteers are exceptionally patient, caring and fun. They go out of their way to make every kid feel special and apart of the family. My daughter just loves Sarah Heinz House. She says she feels like she fits in and belongs more there than at her own school. Sarah Heinz House is truly a treasure to be shared by all.
Review from The Pittsburgh Foundation
Inn 1991 being between jobs I applied and got hired as a camp counselor at Heinz House Camp. Had the best time of my life. Met great people and great kids! I was invited by Charlie Chmura to come to the club and be a volunteer. 22 years later I am still volunteering and enjoying this boys and girls club. The facility is state of the art, has multiple activities and offer so much opportunity. But the best part of this place is the kids and the volunteers. Many of my best friends have come from meetings them or volunteering with them at Sarah Heinz House. Growing up in south suburbs of Pittsburgh I never really knew what the Northside was. This club and it's people not only welcomed me into their group, I became like one of the family. If you donate to Heinz House know that your investment is reaching lots of kids if you volunteer know that it will become a life of friendship and fulfillment.
Our organization, Carnegie Mellon's Robotics Academy, has worked with the Sarah Heinz House since 2003. Each year we team with SHH to host several robotics competitions. In the fall we team with them to host a middle school tournament called FIRST LEGO League and a high school competition called the VEX Competition. Several teams that have competed in those competitions have qualified to go to the National Championship. Each spring SHH sponsors a "May Madness" robotics competition that is open to both middle and high school age students. The spring tournament draws over 30 teams and several hundred kids. They have been an incredible partner and are making a difference in kids lives across the region.
Sarah Heinz House provides youth with the skills necessary to succeed. The staff members are genuinely concerned about every members development. The staff members and volunteers are top notch. The members love being at Heinz House and it's great to know that these children have a place to call home.
