This organization has helped the community in a number of ways. With opportunities for volunteer and service work, and the fostering of countless animals, it makes itself an indistinguishable institution. From a first hand view, the Sanilac County Human Society has, and will continue to help the community in any way they can.

I've been a volunteer for 7 years and a board member for the last year. I'm proud of the way SCHS transfers from other shelters who find themselves with overcrowding. Particularly, the transfer of expectant or new moms and their newborns. A "maternity suite" has been created in a quiet area for mom and family. They are well-cared for and loved and socialized and when they are ready, we find them a forever homes. ♥

I'm so grateful for their help for over a year to get her happy and healthy. She went from 28 lbs. with skin infections all over, to 80 lbs. and a big part of our family. Sanilac County Humane Society is amazing! I was looking for a dog for months but no other shelter would let me in to see the dogs or answer there phone. They where the only ones that got back to me and I got to meet our family's best furend and take him home with us. His name is Harvey and he's been the best addition to our family. It might of been and hour and a half drive but the lady's there where very nice and friendly and if we ever decided to add another furend to our family we would go back there.

Tulla, as she was previously called, came to the society because the owner said she was too stupid to breed. She was tied to the fence there before the volunteer stopped the woman from leaving her there. I was asked to keep her for a weekend by a volunteer I know while the society did their vaccinations that weekend.

Stella, as she is known now, was very scared and wouldn’t come in the house as she I don’t believe she was ever in one before. After 30 minutes of coaxing she came in and never left. ❤️

Stella loves belly rubs, camping, her toy skunk and mostly her people. Her people love her most.

They make sure not only their physical health is in tip top condition but also their mental health. The puppies, dogs, kittens and cats are socialized with a variety of people so when the right home comes along they are ready to go! I have adopted from Sanilac County Humane Society in the past and they have all been wonderful. Last year I found myself in an unfortunate living situation and had to surrender one of my pets. Everyone at the shelter was so kind and understanding of my situation and no one made me feel like I was a monster for wanting to give my little girl the best second chance possible. They reassured me that surrendering her was the best thing considering my current situation. Sanilac County Humane Society took care of my Kiki and found her a wonderful new family. I follow them on Facebook and got to see Kiki's adoption photo!

With the December 2020 "Empty the Shelters" even coming up and knowing that's when they get an increase in adoptable pets, I contacted the shelter and told them that I was ready to open my heart and home to another dog since losing 2 within the year. I told them that I had 2 dogs and 3 cats, most of which are elderly. I requested, if possible, they find me an older or handicapped dog that may have issues finding a home otherwise. I had adopted 6 family members from them so they were familiar with me. They ladies did not disappoint. They contacted me and had me come by for a meet and greet with Mr.M. He was estimated to be 10 years old and had just lost both of his owners. He has his old man quirks, but fits in like he's been with us for years. I have forgotten what it was like before him.

My wife and I were introduced to the Sanilac County Humane Society by our neighbors. For the next 10 + years we volunteered to care for the dogs at least one night a week. We also helped with fund raisers, cut the lawn for a few years and did some maintenance work. We adopted our latest pet, a Scotty-Yorkie we named Ceilidh, from the shelter. The volunteers and director are hardworking, dedicated pet lovers. Due to age we no longer work at shelter but still help at fund raisers and donate funds. Great shelter serving a need in our county for over 20 years.

On December 22, 2019 our family got an early Christmas gift.

I saw a posting for Stuckey, the beautiful Siamese cat at the Sanilac Humane Society, about 1:00 p.m. Our family had just lost our cat, Tora, at Thanksgiving and our house didn't feel right without a cat. Since we live about 90 miles from the Humane Society, I called and let the staff know my husband and I were in the car, heading north.

Once we arrived, staff made sure we had time to talk about Stuckey, his behaviors and needs. They even let us bring in our two rambunctious Boston Terriers who also wanted to "check out" their new brother. We decided that Stuckey would make a great addition to as our newest fury family member.

Again, staff was very helpful and quick in processing our paperwork, contacting our vet and references to make sure that Stuckey would be going to a safe and happy home. Just as the sun was starting to set, on that cold winter day, we loaded Stuckey and the dogs into our car for the 90 mile return trip home.

Fast forward to September 2021. Stuckey doesn't care to be in the presence of the dogs, but, he loves to cuddle in bed with my husband and I, while purring contentedly, or sleeping curled around my head, sharing my pillow. We are happy that he's part of our family.

Thank you to the Sanilac Humane Society for helping to make this possible!

Ive been a volunteer, board member, and client over the years and I can attest that this organization is amazing! The board and volunteers work tirelessly to make lives better for the animals and people! They respond to requests for help from high kill shelters and pull out dogs no one else thinks can be saved, work with them, and match them up with just the right families for happy-ever-after stories. They help neighbors keep their animals with food or medical needs, they have a low cost barn cat program, have worked with medical students to provide large coordinated TNR programs, and have even provided urgent housing for pets who's people are at the women's shelter or deployed. The way the shelter is set up allows the animals lots of space, comfort, and enrichment. I fostered a Chihuahua who was so sick she didnt lift her head the first night but they knew she had a great heart. She's been mine for 2 years now and is the light of our family! We're so grateful for SCHS!!

Hi! My name is Sansa and I would like to tell you about this great place called the Sanilac County Humane Society. I’m actually a rescue from Puerto Rico but my family likes to volunteer at this place. I’m not always thrilled when my humans leave for the day to do this but when they get back I love hearing the stories about all my animal friends! And all the smells they bring home are so awesome!! Lol! I’m so happy there are amazing temporary care places for pets to be loved on and cared for until they find a furever family like I got. Us rescue pups have to stick together so I really don’t mind lending my human mom and siblings out once and a while so they can show the shelter pets what love is. Way to SCHS!!!

The SCHS has always been a love of my late mom. She always spoke so highly of the staff, the services provided, the community events and cleanliness of the facility. When my mom passed, my sister and I brought donations from friends and family to the shelter. We had a nice heart to heart with the lady working that day, and right before we were about to leave she asked us if we wanted to have some pet therapy. My sister and I got to sit in the middle of a pen full of adorable puppies who were ecstatic to get some scratches! My overall mood leaving the shelter that day was completely changed all by an act of kindness from that lady just going that extra mile for us!

I have been volunteering for 14 years at SCHS. It's a no kill shelter and we have a great group of volunteers. We all take pride in taking good care of our furry guests until they find their forever home. Our shelter is very clean, we all work very hard to keep it clean and odor free.
I adopted my "heart" dog from SCHS in 2006, her name was Bella and she had severe separation anxiety. Other volunteers always stepped up to help me with taking care of Bella when I needed to go somewhere and couldn't take her with me. I always knew she was in great hands with them especially when she was old. I adopted another dog earlier this year from a different organization and even though I love our new friend, the adoption process was not nearly as smooth as adopting from SCHS.

Sanilac County Humane Society changed my home. I went in looking to socialize a few kitties and fell in love. It wasn't 24 hours and I was back to adopt my new kittens. My once quiet home now filled with pounces, purrs and laughter. The people at there were friendly and helpful! I tell everyone to get their new kitties there!

This is a no-kill dog and animal rescue. All animals find their forever homes! Once that match is made, it is forever. Saving animals and people for 20 years!

Our pooch came from Sanilac County Humane Society and our family volunteers with them occasionally. We've had a great experience with every interaction!

You can't deny the passion and compassion every single volunteer, board member and supporter has for the animals at the Sanilac County Humane Society. All of the animals are cared for and loved immensely by all the helping hands at the shelter. The effort they are putting in to making the whole thumb region of Michigan a No-Kill area is remarkable. Being able to volunteer at SCHS has truly been a great experience! I look forward to seeing what this wonderful organization accomplishes in the future!

We just adopted our first rescue dog a few weeks ago! The shelter was clean, the pets well taken care of and the volunteer that assisted us with our new little lady was so helpful and kind! We will be adopting from here again in the future!

This no-kill facility is an excellent example of a care facility for our voiceless animals. The passion of its staff and volunteers is amazing. They are constantly raising awareness by hosting various community fun-raisers so they may provide the quality care for our furry friends. Any financial support would be waved in, just sayin!
