Causes: Environment, Natural Resources Conservation & Protection
Mission: Sjca advocates for clean air, pure water and healthy lands which are the foundations of resilient communities, ecosystems and enonomies in the san juan basin.
Programs: Coal we continued to pursue retirement of polluting coal facilities in the four corners. The focus of our activity during the year was ongoing efforts to force compliance with environmental laws by the four corners power plant and associated navajo mine. This included litigation around the national environmental policy act review of the power plant and mine, and efforts through freedom of information act requests to obtain documents about the operation and permitting of coal development and combustion.
oil and gas (new mexico and colorado combined) we focused on education and outreach to the general public about environmental concerns related to expanding oil and gas development nearby chaco culture national historical park. We encouraged the public to express their opinions to the bureau of land management about potential impacts to the cultural resources, air and water quality, and local residents living in communities likely to be impacted by adjacent industrial development. We specifically provided education about the benefits of a proactive master leasing plan for lands adjacent to and nearby mesa verde national park in advance of new oil and gas leasing and development.
lands protection we encouraged public participation in land use planning decisions by the bureau of land management and forest service. We mobilized public comment in response to specific national forest decisions about travel management on trails and roads in the dolores river and rico areas. We supported public involvement in environmental analyses around timber projects, oil and gas leases, and national monument designations.
