Mission: The mission of the san jose repertory theatre is to engage, entertain and inspire people. We produce innovative theatrical performances that offer fresh perspectives into the human condition, educational programs that promote life-long learning, and outreach initiatives that benefit our diverse community. The repertory is housed in the susan and phil hammer theatre center which we operate for the city of san jose and make available to numerous performing arts groups in our community.
Programs: Production: our 2009-10 season was the inaugural season for new artistic director, rick lombardo and consisted of shakespeare's "as you like it", the west coast premiere of south african playwright ian bruce's "groundswell", "a christmas story", irish playwright conor mcpherson's "the weir", "ain't misbehavin'" featuring the music of thomas "fats" waller, and the regional premiere of latina playwright melinda lopez's "sonia flew". In addition, the rep presented a summer series of two plays featuring emmy award winning actor ed asner in "fdr", and the jute-box musical, "the marvelous wonderettes". Approximately 90,000 people attended plays at the rep during the 2009-10 season and these fully professional productions garnered high critical acclaim and numerous bay area theatre critics circle awards.
eduction: our education and outreach department served over 40,000 members of our community through our red ladder theatre company, student and senior matinees, asl signed performances, our artist-in-the schools program, recess at the rep - a program for area teachers, on-line study guides for all of our plays and creative play shops and creative dramatic workshops. We also presented "ghostlight forums" before the opening of each of our plays where members of our casts and creative team had a panel discussion in the theatre for patrons. Also, we instituted "pay-what-you-will" nights where members of our community could pay any price and get into the final dress rehearsal of each of our plays.
community: finally, as the operator of the hammer theatre center we worked with numerous local performing arts groups performing in our venue. These groups included the san jose jazz festival, cinequest film festival, hua yi asian opera company and the filipino cultural performing group of san jose state university.
