Mission: The San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art was founded in 1980 with the mission of promoting greater awareness, understanding, and appreciation of contemporary art and its capacity to stimulate our imaginations and illuminate our lives, our relationships, and our communities. In order to fulfill this mission, the ICA strives to present innovative visual art exhibitions, offer engaging and informative educational programs, and provide much needed professional support for local artists. At the core of our efforts lies the belief that the arts play a critical role in sustaining a healthy and vibrant community. In addition to fostering freedom of expression, critical thinking, and open dialogue, the ICA’s contemporary art exhibitions and educational programs illustrate the creativity and innovation that have become the hallmark characteristics of Silicon Valley.
Programs: As its core program, the ICA presents a wide-ranging schedule of exhibitions each year. These exhibitions represent cutting-edge trends in contemporary art and include drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, and new media works addressing a range of subject matter and themes. In addition, the ICA's "Night Moves" program presents video projections, sound installations, kinetic light projects, and other new media works in the gallery's front windows after dark, giving the ICA an ongoing nighttime presence that contributes to the vitality of the downtown cultural landscape and reaches out to attendees of local restaurants, theaters, and nightclubs.
