I have been working with the San Gabriel Mountains Regional Conservancy for almost 20 years. I love the mission and objectives that this 501c3 tackles. From hiking trail maintenance to environmental stewardship and awareness SGMRC is doing wonderful thing for our planet and local ecology.
I've been a Board Member and volunteer with SGMRC for 15 years. We provide 'social capital' for the San Gabriel River watershed, implementing projects that benefit the public--for example, I'm Lead for a Waterless (no water once established) research garden that is generating findings for water conservation. Another part of SGMRC's work is to help students and youth groups gain volunteer experience. We also provide public education through workshops and interpretation at our Santa Fe Dam Nature Center.
In my opinion, the best part of SGMRC is the volunteer projects. We hear about potential volunteer projects during Board Meetings or through our web of contacts, and it's inspirational how with a little bit of support from SGMRC--perhaps help with grant writing, or an introduction to a third party--people can make their dreams come true. You have to be independent minded, resourceful, and interested in working with volunteers, but the projects are very rewarding.
