Mission: The organization's primary exempt purpose is education and advocacy for the preservation and adaptive reuse of historically and architecturally significant structures in san francisco.
Programs: House - heritage owns and maintains an 1886 queen anne victorian house museum, open three days a week and by appointment to groups guided by volunteer docents. Nearly 4,715 visited the house during 2014. Elementary schools groups visit the house and its neighborhood to gain an appreciation for victorian architecture and life in that era, 47 school groups, containing over 1,000 students, were accomodated. The house is available for rental to members for member-sponsored events. 45 volunteers assist in conducting house tours and educational programs.
education - heritage advocates urban conservation in the public-decision making process by monitoring projects and polices that affect historic resources at the san francisco planning commission, historic preservation commission and the board of supervisors, and by providing a forum for public awareness. Other educational programs include walking tours of san francisco, special tours and lectures (560 attend these) about its significant structures and architectural history, and a book store. Heritage monitors 63 preservation easements, ensuring that the facades of historically significant structures are maintained in perpetuity. Heritage released a book ("port city") chronicling the history of san francisco's maritime past.
