This is an incredible organization that has gained national reputation for being a model of how to organize to make a difference at a neighborhood scale across a region. The focus of the group is to create a better future for a 52 mile river that had become polluted, a dumping ground and lacked safe public access. Since its founding, it organized volunteers to remove more than 1.4 million lbs. of trash from the river, helping to make it safer and healthier. It has led the charge to conserve more than 1000 acres of scenic and natural lands of global significance. It has also advanced plans for a river long system of parks, trail and preserve. Indeed the San Diego River has a better future thanks to this organizaiton.

Causes: Environment, Parks & Playgrounds
Mission: We are the only community based organization dedicated to the entire San Diego River and work to bring together all interested parties to make the river park a reality and advance a healthy river system.
Programs: This is our program to engage people in promoting a healthy San Diego River Watershed. 440 square miles drains into the San Diego River and more than 500,000 people live in this area. Healthy River, Healthy Communicites has several key components:
- River Blitz - a bi-annual survey of the river
- River Watch - an extensive monthly water monitoring program
- Clean and Green - our incredible volunteer program which takes the data collected in our surveys and targets specific clean-up actions
- Watershed Forum - a program to bring partners together to work on projects and programs which improve the health of the river.
