My name is Clara and I am eleven years old. I partner with my sister, Eliza, and my brother, Eirik in our business, Sutton Academy, found online at https://www.facebook.com/SuttonAcademy/. We started our business to help support our various extracurricular activities. We are homeshooled and all are very involved with arts. My brother and sister are competitive highland dancers. My sister also plays violin. My brother plays double bass, guitar and drums. I play bagpipes and enjoy fiber arts such as spinning, weaving, sewing, crocheting and knitting.
In order for us to take classes, go to competitions, and enjoy our arts, our parents sacrifice a lot to afford it all. So, we decided to open a business to make some money to help pay for some of our activities. In addition to helping, we are learning a lot about running a business and being entrepreneurs. We were taught that it is very important to give back to our community, so each of us chose a charity where a portion of our profits are sent.
My brother chose San Antonio Dance Umbrella, My sister chose the retirement Sanctuary for Laboratory Animals. My chosen charity is San Antonio Threads, found online at https://www.facebook.com/4ourteens/, an organization that allows teens in the foster system and otherwise in need, a chance to shop for new and new-like clothes in a boutique like environment. This helps them with their sense of self esteem and allows them to shop with dignity.
We are encouraged to also volunteer our time at our chosen charities in addition to simply sending money. Even though it is my charity, my brother and sister always join me to help volunteer at Threads for Teens. We are volunteering about once a week to help out in any way we can. So far we have helped organize clothes, set up the accessories counter and stuffed stockings for Christmas. It is not only rewarding but a lot of fun.
Volunteering here helps us understand how fortunate we are and how we should be humble and give back where we can. I look forward to my volunteer time with San Antonio Threads and hope that they get more exposure so others help those kids who need assistance.
