The total expense included paying for the spay/neuter of 961 dogs and cats through grant funding and proceeds from thrift shop operations. In addition, special providers were provided to kennel unwanted animals until they could be placed. Some dogs were transported to outside service providers where they were rehabilitated. The program services provided by sammie's friends includes sheltering, feeding, adoption services and medical attention to dogs, cats, farm animals and any other stray animals brought to the shelter. A total of 650 dogs, cats and other animals received medical attention and an additional 147 dogs and 424 cats were spayed/neutered as part of sammie's friends shelter services. An existing volunteer program assisted the shelter staff (5 employees and 2 managers) in maintaining the animals, giving the animals daily exercise and socialization services. A total of about 100 volunteers makes up this vital auxiliary program. For the full year, a total of 1,625 animals came to the shelter, including 734 dogs, 707 cats and 184 other animals. A total of 1,626 animals left the shelter either by adoption (1,147), redemption (370), rescue (52) or, in very limited situations, euthanasia (10). A total of 47 other animals died because of severe injury or sickness.

Each month, sammie's friends takes donated dog and cat food to north san juan and the town of washington to distribute to families who gather at the community center on the day that the food bank of nevada county makes its monthly distribution. We have been doing this for over 10 years. We reach about 60 families with our pet food donations each month. The donated dog and cat food represents a non-cash donation to sammie's friends valued at 60,397. In addition, sammie's friends provides hay and other horse food to disadvantaged families who have animals that they cannot sufficiently provide for. Sammie's friends has a special fund dedicated to this service.
