Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Gift Distribution, Human Services

Mission: A hospital stay is a terrifying experience for a child. It is particularly frightening for a child with cancer and other life changing illnesses and injuries. They and their parents are often facing weeks and months of living in sterile hospital rooms, surrounded by a dizzying parade of doctors, nurses and strangers poking and prodding them with needles. Fear, boredom and loneliness are constant companions when what they want most are the comforts of home, school, family and friends. To make each stay more bearable, conkerr cancer provides cheerily designed pillowcases for sick children. Our goal is to give a bright cheery pillowcase to every seriously ill child in north america. In 8 years, conkerr cancer volunteers have delivered over 1,100,000 pillowcases to children in hospitals around the world. Conkerr volunteers also sew with children in hospitals across the country. These events give each child the opportunity to sew a pillowcase for themselves and as a gift for someone else. T

My daughter was diagnosed with Germ Cell Cancer and was going through treatment. Getting these pillow cases made her smile and more comfy. It was a much appreciated distraction. Instead of looking at the hospital cases, it gave her something colorful or pretty to look at. Thank you for everything you do.

I found out about ConKerr Cancer a couple of years ago. I live in Scottsdale, AZ and wanted to find a way that I could volunteer on my schedule. My son is also a physician and inspired me to look for a way to give something back to patients going through hard times in hospitals. I love to sew and ConKerr Cancer offer me a way to help children who are undergoing extremely painful treatments for different diseases. Volunteers sew colorful pillowcases for the patients. These pillowcases brighten up the patients hospital rooms and the children take the pillowcases home at the end of their treatments. I contacted the national director Cindy Kerr. Cindy put me in touch with the local Phoenix Chapter Coordinator - JoAnn Shaw. I actually got to accompany JoAnn to one one of the hospitals and sew with several patients. What a rewarding experience that was. Any one who is interested in sewing ConKerr Cancer pillowcases can drop the completed cases off at one of several local Phoenix metro quilt shops. If you have questions, feel free to reach out to JoAnn Shaw at cases4smilesAZ@outlook.com or 623 466-6223.
