Dear RHP,
You have been there for me every time I’ve had an emergency. I didn’t know where to turn to until you. My roof was leaking and RHP came and put a new roof on for me. I desperately needed heat and air and you came out and put in a heat and central air system. You are a GOD send. Thank you my angel’s of mercy.

RHP stretches every dollar like no other nonprofit I have ever seen. It does its work mainly with volunteers. Lots of volunteers. The board members have a true sense of mission and a diversity of talents; some of us don't actually work on the projects but all of us are active in helping with the operations, out front or behind the scenes, each in our own way. It is very fulfilling to me to find myself among people whose purpose is not only genuinely compassionate but also deeply practical. It is very moving to hear the testimonials of the people who receive our help. It is also inspirational to see the positive way the board conducts the business of the organization. The need is so great it is almost overwhelming. RHP just keeps on working away at the problem day by day and in so doing is making a meaningful difference in the lives of the people it can help.

On behalf of my mom and dad they would like to thank Rutherford Housing Partnership for all they have done. They moved here from Kentucky, and purchased a home here in North Carolina. They needed help from the community to get our home winterized so we could stay here and not have to move back to Kentucky. A friend of the family suggested that we try Rutherford Housing to try to get help. We explained our situation to the Housing and they took our information and said we qualified for the help. I am on oxygen and my husband has health issues also. We are very appreciative of the hospitality that we have experienced with the help within the community from the Rutherford Housing Partnership. We would recommend anyone that needs help in winterizing their home, to contact the Rutherford Housing Partnership and see if they qualify for the help, if it had not been for the help of these people we wouldn't have been able to stay here, they all were very nice to work with. Thank you Rutherford Housing Partnership for your help we are very appreciative.

If it's free, it's to good to be true.Rutherford Housing Partnership is an exception to that saying. I,Myrtle Phillips, did get free home improvements to reduce heating costs and maneuver safely with a handicap ramp.
Rutherford HousingPartnership insulated my attic, caulked a window, serviced my furnace, checked air vents, blocked some holes around water pipes and gave me some light bulbs. I really appreciated those energy saving measures.
Rutherford Housing Partnership also built me the best ramp to get outside safely. The church group that built made it most convenient to push a walker or use a wheelchair. I can even hold onto the sturdy handrails and walk down with my cane.
The Partnership even gave my daughter the phone number of an organization that made my bathtub into a shower, added a seat, installed a safety pole, and reversed the door. All free.
All the people who worked at my home were very nice. They also told me exactly what they were going to do and asked if it was OK with me. Their kindness and generosity makes a 90 year old grateful. Thank you, Rutherford Housing Partnership.

Sincerely,

Rutherford Housing Partnership is an organization defined by compassionate action. I first became involved with RHP as a donor because I believed in its mission. Wanting more hands-on, I became a woman roofer. When asked to be a board member, I hesitated at first because of prior experience at meetings where talk was the order of the day with little action. This is not the case with RHP. It is amazing to me the amount of work that gets done by such a small non-profit. The word partnership in the title refers to more than housing to me. There are partnerships formed between grateful clients, volunteers, board members, supporters and the general public. I cannot say enough about this incredible organization and it is truly an honor to be connected with it.

RHP has been in existence since 1995. Begun with a handful of volunteers and a few donations, the organization has grown, but continues to remain small with a large impact in addressing housing issues in Rutherford County, N.C. Having been involved with the iniial organizing of RHP, it has been humbling to see the response and support from people, groups, churches, businesses and foundations to help with the mission of RHP over the years. In the last 10 years or so to see from 100-400 volunteers on an annual basis roof houses, repair floors, porches, plumbing, windows, doors, and build handicap ramps out of their own sense of caring is grafifying. The use of volunteers has allowed far more to be done with the limited resources of RHP. To finish a roof for an elderly lady who is on a restriced income and see the joy in her face as her worry is relieved concerning her leaking roof motivates volunteers to do more. To build a handicap ramp for a person bound to a wheel chair ensures that in case of a fire they have a greater chance to get out of their house is a relief. To take care of plumbing issues that create unsanitary conditions makes a house safer. For many of the clients of RHP, limited income excludes house repairs for the important needs of food, medicines, utilities, etc., consume a monthly income check so quickly.
RHP has become an important agency in Rutherford County along with other agencies in addressing housing issues. Currently, over 130 clients have an application with RHP for some assistance with housing issues. Any and all funding will be carefully used to help address this list of clients. RHP is grateful for any consideration.

I am an elderly woman recently widowed. I am fortunate to be allowed to live in an old house for free. It was badly in need of paint and the steps were very dangerous. I live on $350 per month and have no money left at the end of the month to repair my home, Rutherford Housing Partnership came in and painted my entire house and replaced the steps with new ones and even installed a small deck and didn't charge me a penny. These people were a God send for me and I am so thankful for what they do in my community.

Rutherford Housing Partnership is the only organization of its kind in our area. We provide urgent home repairs such as new roofs and floors as well as building handicap ramps for low-income homeowners. Our clients include the elderly, single parents and the disabled. We raise funds by various means to purchase the building materials needed for each project. We then enlist volunteers to complete the work. We partner with other local nonprofits to make our resources go farther. Our clients have no other means of accomplishing these repairs and are so grateful for the assistance. Once the repairs are completed they no longer have to worry about getting wet when it rains or falling through the bathroom floor or how they'll get into and out of their homes. I can truly say that Rutherford Housing Partnership models professionalism and passion in fulfilling its mission. It is a great example of people-to-people community service.

RHP has been a blessing to me. When they learned that I could no longer navigate the stairs on my front porch, they had a ramp built from my porch to my driveway. RHP provided all materials involved and coordinated the labor between two volunteer groups. I feel so fortunate that this organization is active in my community. Thank you RHP.

Last year Rutherford Housing Partnership roofed my mother’s house. She is on a fixed income and could only pay for the shingles. They did all the labor free and went above and beyond the call of duty. I hope you will consider this great organization to receive the $5,000 Prize. They are very deserving and I know they will put the money to good use.
Thank you,

Dear GuideStar USA,
My name is Dorothy Daniel and I turned 90 years old Christmas day of 2010. I live alone and, other than some minor ailments that come with age, I’ve been very blessed healthwise, and for that I am thankful.
Last year I began noticing leak spots on the ceiling of three rooms in my house. I found a few of my shingles in my yard that had blown off my roof and, after having someone check the roof, I was told that I needed new shingles on the whole roof. After learning about Rutherford Housing Partnership, I applied for the grant to roof my house and was approved. I was able to pay for the shingles but RHP provided the labor free of charge making this affordable to me.
Several skilled volunteers sacrificed their time and labor for four different days to do this work. Everyone who had a part in this project was extremely kind and thoughtful. They ordered my shingles, removed the old ones, repaired a couple of rotten boards, put the new shingles on and did an excellent yard clean-up. Their work was very professional. They all worked very hard and wasted no time in getting this job done. It was very well organized.
I have been very pleased with the results and will always be grateful for their sacrifice and for this program that has helped many other people like me.
This service is greatly needed in our county and I am very pleased to write this review for such a worthy cause.
Sincerely,
Dorothy C. Daniel

In addition to working as a volunteer with the "Women Roofers", I donate my time but also financially to the organization. I KNOW the money is spent on recipients needs. The recipients include the elderly, disabled, very worthy people.

I am a pastor in this county and have also worked with some projects with RHP. They do wonderful work in a county which has been hard hit in these hard economic times. I have been here for 16 years and watched the textile and furniture plants close. We were recently ranked in the top 13 counties which are depressed in the country. Were it not for RHP,many homes would be leaking, many handicapped would not have ramps into their homes, and many poor and elderly would not have the necessary repairs to their home which allows them to stay in their homes. This is one of the most frugal and compassionate organizations I have ever been around.

I have volunteered with Rutherford Housing Partnership in helping to build handicapped ramps for citizens of Rutherford County. When we get to the site, the materials are waiting for us to build. There is always a seasoned volunteer that knows how to complete the task on hand. I am an amateur but have enjoyed learning new skills (using a miter saw) (Thanks to Bill F. !) Staff and other volunteers come by to check on us. I have been impressed with the number of families and individuals we have been able to assist. The families are so appreciative of what has been done. The volunteers and staff don't boast of their accomplishments, except to raise funds to help even more citizens. It is great to see the citizens of Rutherford County pull together to help those in need. I think the Rutherford Housing Partnership has been able to improve living situations in the county and hope that it will continue to grow!

I work daily with rhp. I see first hand how this group is making a difference in the lifes of people that need their assistance to bring their house up to living standard. They have very little money and a lot of volunteers. They have to make their money go a far as they can.

Rutherford Housing Partnership is well organized and uses volunteers efficently. Donor monies are stretched as supplies are used wisely. A very smal administrate budget is incurred. My experience with the organization has been very positive.

I am connected with many people who are volunteers with RHP--my parents and a number of our long term family friends are dedicated to the mission of RHP. I have seen these volunteers and board members work for years now to say "no" to substandard housing and "yes" to safety, dignity and freedom.

I have been inspired by their creativity--in defining the mission, carrying out the mission, and funding the mission of RHP.

1) RHP volunteers have "nailed" a significant need--shorter term home repair projects that often times volunteers can carry out. In this way, they do not duplicate services that are provided by other local agencies, and can actually work very closely with them.

2) RHP volunteers give a great deal of time and effort to reach out to local citizens, gather materials, make repairs, and ensure the completion of each project.

3) RHP volunteers also spend a lot of time and effort on fundraisers--on dinners and gatherings and mailings that are effective in their local community. They are also good stewards of the money they raise, to ensure maximum impact.

I am impressed with the energy and priority RHP's volunteers offer to those in need in their county. They have impacted many lives for the good.
