Ruff House Rescue is a very caring group of dedicated animal lovers who open their homes and hearts to abandon animals showing them the love and compassion they so desperately need. Anyone who is looking to make the world a little better can do so by rescuing one of the pups that RHR fosters. Saving animals is not easy for those who volunteer but is worth every minute when they can connect a needy pup with their forever home.

Earlier this year we wanted to help out and adopt a pup that needed a home. So we filled out the RHR application and then went through an extensive phone and home video interview and inspection. Everyone involved in the vetting process was very professional. We were impressed at how detailed they were to make sure that if we were approved our home would be safe and welcoming to one of their charges. If every rescue did what RHR does there is no doubt in our minds that every dog placed would end up in great forever homes.

Originally, we were interested in a dachshund/poodle mix but had to pass on her because we were not feeling well to bring her home. A few weeks later we went to a RHR foster home to meet a few potential pups. Our original intention was to adopt a similar pup to the one we had to pass on and decided to trial foster a totally different pup who is a chihuahua/rat terrier mix from Korea who was very shy and not very interested in us.

From the moment we adopted Ozzy we kept in contact with RHR via multiple texts, photos and videos to keep everyone in the loop as he slowly came out of his shell. It took a few weeks for Ozzy to want to fully explore our home and fenced in yard. Then a few more weeks until he found his voice and proved to us, yes he can bark, especially when we were, in his mind, taking a bit too long to cook his eggs for breakfast. Now a few months later he is part of the family, enjoying playing with his brothers and sisters, keeping up with them and showing that he is truly one of the gang.

So if you want to help a pup in need and support the gallant efforts of the RHR organization we would highly recommend that you do so. As a former board member of an Animal Rescue in Massachusetts I can say that this organization truly deserves the support of any animal lover who wants to make a difference by adopting one of their wonderful pups.

I can't believe that it's coming up on a year since I fostered, then adopted Zero. I volunteered to take him into Schwartzman Animal Medical Clinic in New York City from Ruff House Rescue's West Islip facility. When I picked him up the Volunteers (Rosemarie, Cathy, Diane & Rommie) asked me if I was interested in adopting him, at the time I wasn't but they did a great job selling the idea. They let me see him interact with Caleb & despite being blind he seemed to have some vision. After the NYC vet visit they arranged a "meet & greet" with my rescue, Rudy. They got along well so I was warming to the idea. After his surgery to remove his right eye, I decided to bring him to my home to recover. He was "Perfect" & Rudy enjoyed having him. Unfortunately although I thought he had some vision in his right eye, that also has to be removed. Ruff House Rescue covered all Vet visits, medicine & both surgeries. One thing I noticed when I was taking him for NYC appointments is that Zero couldn't wait to get back to the West Islip kennel. I attribute that to the incredible volunteers work that they do. I recommend Ruff House to all my friends that are looking to adopt. They give you the straight scoop on the pet your looking to adopt. Other rescues do not get to know the pets like Ruff House does. They are the best!

I have adopted 3 dogs from Ruff House since 2018. The adoption process was smooth and the volunteers communicated in a professional manner from start to finish. I appreciated the home visit portion of my application as we had transitioned from an apartment to a home with a yard and the safety feedback that the volunteer reviewed with us was invaluable. You would never have guessed that a simple carabiner clip would save you the worry of “the gate being open”. When you have landscapers this is always at the forefront of one’s mind. Now no one gets into my yard without me knowing. The adoption prices are fair, especially since most of the dogs are saved from euthanasia, vetted, spayed/neutered and transported to New York! When you adopt from Ruff House not only do you get the dog of your dreams but you also get the support of the volunteers that loved your fur baby while they were in your care.

This place is not an animal rescue they do not care about the dogs or cats the owner is a thief it's all about money she transports dogs from Texas down here to New York sick dogs she does not have them past quarantine she does nothing for these poor animals she doesn't even have a kennel anymore which she had to go to court and had to pay a $6,600 fine and to be evicted she's still getting dogs from Texas bringing them down here and keeping them in the rough House rescue van for days this woman needs to be stopped she's not helping the dogs she's actually killing them

Recently adopted a lovely little 1 year old terrier/mix named Glorie. She is a little angel. Perfect fit for me. My experience with Ruff House Rescue has been so powerful. Great website with lots of dogs to adopt and their stories. Jackie at Ruff House was a great liaison. Explained the process, kept me informed with phone calls, emails and text messages. During my in person appointment met a lovely women Nancy who listened to my needs. I explained that the 2 puppies I saw and walked were a little too high energy for me. I work from home so the dog will never be alone. Nancy brought out Glorie and it was love at first sight. Glorie is sweet, loving and a perfect energy fit for me.

I am a veterinarian who was looking for a new addition to our family. Within hours of my application, Jackie reached out to me and was wonderful in every way. She guided me through the entire process. The next day Debbie came to our home and thankfully found it perfect for a new pet. Jackie scouted out dogs based on what we were looking for and provided great options. Within 3 days of applying, we were invited to an adoption event where we could meet up to 3 dogs of our choosing. We selected 4 month old “ Zim” and were very happy we did.
Ruff House Rescue is professional and truly works hard to focus on the right fit for each family. There is a thorough screening process designed to make sure that each pet is going to a home that can meet all of its needs and keep them safe. We were very impressed!

My husband was watching news 12 and they had these dogs up for adoption from RHR. I filled the forms out and was interviewed. Also had soneone come toy house to see if it was safe. The original dog we picked was not available so we looked at others and was introduced to Quincy now Queenie a Chihuahua mix and it was love at first sight!! She has been with us for 6 months now and gets along with her sisters who r greyhounds and she rules the roost!! She has found her forever home with us and we love her. She was chipped and spayed so the cost of the adoption also goes to helping all the other dogs as well. I highly recommend adoptions from them!!

Just adopted my pup Stark from Ruff House and it was a great experience! I applied online, Got a call back within maybe 2-3 days and got set up with Chelsey to aid with the application process! After just about a week, a home inspection and a meetup with my pup, I went over to Ruff House’s Adoption day, filled out my paperwork, and got my baby Stark! The people there are amazing and all the hard work they put in to help out these amazing animals is extraordinary!

My experience with Ruff House couldn’t have been better. From Jennifer who initially interviewed me to the woman who handled the home inspection to Jackie, the adoption coordinator who introduced me to my Dave and passed him along to me, everyone at Ruff House was kind and friendly and seemed to have the animals’ best interests at heart. Dave was very fearful in the beginning; everyone was careful to explain his issues to me and to make sure we were a good match. Which we are, happily. Thank you, Ruff House, from me and my new(ish) bff!

My name is Mattia. I have been a volunteer with Ruff House Rescue for the past five years. In that time my sister and I have fostered 171 mostly puppies and some dogs who have gone on to find loving forever homes. One of my favorite RHR stories is about Lamby, a puppy we fostered and have recently adopted. Lamby was pulled as a six week old puppy from a high kill shelter in Texas and went to a Texas based RHR foster. He was rushed to a clinic because he because very sick and remained there for a days. The vets could not figure out what was wrong with him and they wanted to euthanize him because he was not improving no matter what they did. His foster and Diane (our director) disagreed and Lamby was given a chance to live. Lamby couldn't walk or get up but everyday he lifted his head to eat. Day by day he improved and he was ready to come to New York to us.

Lamby was missing most of his fur and did not have much use of his back legs when he arrived in New York. He looked like a featherless chicken--scrawny with pink skin and sparse, fluffy white patches of hair. He only weighed about 3 lbs. Lamby ate like he was catching up and his strength improved day by day. In a few weeks he was running around our back yard--jumping and playing with our dogs. He demanded attention and toys and love. He was vocal and was finally ready to be a thriving, highly-adoptable, beautiful puppy. But Lamby was set on staying with us. One hour-long meet and greet and he jumped up on us the entire time. So he stayed. His strong-will kept him alive when he was dying. And Ruff House Rescue gave him the chance to live and to thrive.

Today he has grown into a completely healthy and gorgeous dog. His hair is shimmery-white and long. He is vocal and will let you know when he wants something. He will push you with his nose for belly rubs, over and over until he is satisfied. And he spends most of his days sunning himself in the window or playing with his brothers and any fosters we have. Lamby brings us so much joy. He is a miracle and I will be forever grateful to Diane and Ruff House Rescue for saving his life--for giving me the opportunity to foster him and for allowing me to adopt him. Because of RHR I will continue on with determination and dedication to rescue the forgotten. Rescue is life and the Lambys are what it's all about.

I have too many amazing, heart wrenching, bittersweet, emotion filled stories with Ruff House to choose just one but I will start with my first encounter...What first started as transporting dog food quickly escalated to driving the transport van of deserving babies rescued from kill shelters to the safety of the undeniably best rescue around, Ruff House Rescue. I originally thought fostering dogs was unattainable-it was only for people heavily involved. I always admired it,but never thought it was something I could do. One day my director told me a foster she had for “4 tiny puppies” backed out and she was desperate. My sister and I have since fostered 171 dogs to date and continue to volunteer in many other ways with Ruff House! Since my first time fostering Ruff House has walked me through everything there was to learn. I have learned so much from the 6 years volunteering with this rescue than I have anywhere else in my 33 years of life. Ruff House Reacue, especially Diane, has an undeniable love for animals and gives their all for every single dog. Ruff house has taught me passion, dedication, patience among many other things..Above all; Diane has taught me selflessness, that no matter what is being thrown our way the dogs need us, rescue never stops! Ruff House is the real deal, Ruff House IS reacue. I have adopted 3 of my fosters, created many memories, and made many lifelong—more like family, friends. I admire every single volunteer at the rescue because I know how hard we all work with the same mission in mind, to get the dogs home. We host adoption events every weekend to give all of our dogs as many opportunities as we can to get adopted, and so we can rescue more innocent dogs and cats from death row. Ruff House’s priority is sending dogs & cats to the best homes we can find. I can from the bottom of my heart say rescue is the most difficult and rewarding thing I have every experienced in my life and I am so grateful for Diane and the volunteers at Ruff House Rescue for letting me be apart of it, I’m so proud to be here doing this with you all!

I have been volunteering at Ruff House Rescue for over a year and am in total amazement as to the ability of this Rescue to step up and help and Rescue dogs. They provide a safe haven for their rescues to live in foster homes as well as provide a kennel where they are loved and cared for. Adoption events, application reviews and and home visits of potential adopters are part of the volunteer system that sure a great placement for ALL ruff house rescue pups. Much time is spent with the process and dogs that need a bit more medical help or in home attention with training help these dogs on their road to recovery and their second chance. I function as a dog walker, application processes and currently have two medical fosters. I am proud to be a part of Ruff House Rescue and in total awe of all the pups that find their forever home while in their care.

what I don't understand is being told that an adoption event means they load up a "van" of dogs that we're rescued as is. The dogs at the event come as they are while rescued in another state straight off the van.(With health issues and all) Then told you have to find a dog within that pile that got rescued? I feel like for the well being of the dog they should at least have the dogs evaluated by a vet first or something with some sort of animal health knowledge? I have other animals at home and was told am I willing to risk taking in a sick dog and be able to cover the medical expenses. It sounds like id bring home a dog with kennel cough, parvo, mites and ticks. To me this rescue turned me off and it didn't sound like they really cared about the well being of any animals they so called rescued. And the fee's we're ridiculously explained with the whole spay and neuter scenario?

Our pets are not loaded up "as is" . We have a new adoption van since 2019. We ask fosters to care for animals that may need medical prior to adoption such as heart worm disease, leg or eye surgery etc. I do not know if an eager RHR volunteer requested this posted to take a dog that needed medical care prior to adoption so I can speak to a conversation I was not privy to as the Director but this post does not represent our adoption process. In 2020 during covid we lost the ASPCA services to spay and neuter our pets for free however rescues in the 5 buroughs of NYC were able to maintain free altering for their adoptable pets. None of our cats and dogs can be adopted without surgery or if HW positive. RHR'S medical expenses have increased triple fold with no outside financial assistance available to help us maintain our normal adoption fees. Rising veterinarian costs have been our biggest challenge to date.

If you live on a busy street and don't have a white picket fence around your yard, don't waste your time with this "non" profit adoption agency.

My husband and I own a home with a third of an acre of land in our backyard which was the playground to our two incredible fur babies we have rescued over the years.

We just tried to adopt a puppy from Ruffhouse We installed 24 feet of fencing in one area of our yard that they pointed out. It was installed the day after our home inspection to satisfy their requirements. We sent over proof that the work was done.

A relative of ours adopted a puppy from Ruff House. We tried to adopt the puppy's sibling so the dogs could grow up together.

We were denied because Ruffhouse doesn't like the look of the fence we have in the backyard? Told us that our street is too busy for a pet only after we invested in this fencing. EVERY house on our block has dogs. Our fence has never allowed another dog in or our dogs out of the yard in the past.

Your denial is discriminatory. Not allowing this adoption because the fence wasn't good enough for you (it certainly kept our children and pets safe) and the street is too busy. We live on Long Island not in the countyside

You didn't do what was best for these two dogs. Now they won't grow up together. Shameful and disappointing

I’m very sad and disappointed. I applied when the love of our lives Dexter passed away. It took a very long time to even get a phone interview and a home visit. They said we needed a “ caribiner “ lock on our gate even though it clips and locks on its own. I purchased one and they still didn’t approve us because we ha e a small fire pit in the backyard, I was like do you think the dog is going to jump in a fire? We had it going all the time around Dexter our previous dog and he loved it. They are not doing these dogs any favors by being so critical. We have a beautiful home and a lot of love to give. I’ll be looking elsewhere

RHR does their homework and makes sure the dogs are going to a home that they feel is the best fit for the dog.

Maverick was treated with such great care during his time during RHR, with his brother at a foster's house. Working with April was such a pleasure.

On the day we came to pick up Maverick, all of the volunteers were so nice and even let us walk some of the dogs before it was time to get him. Every one of the volunteers we dealt with at RHR were great and we appreciate they work they do more than we can say.

The adoption fee does not guarantee the dog you adopted has actually received anything they claim it covers. Being a naive adopter, first-timer really, I was taken advantage of. I adopted a dog, paid the adoption fee plus a "hold" to ensure I will take him to get neutered since the dog hadn't been neutered at that point (although it was included in the adoption fee). Only to find out what the adoption fee was supposed to cover WAS NOT done. He had kennel cough, had not received all of his vaccines, did not receive a heartworm test, 4dx test, and was NOT dewormed. How do I know you ask? My puppy tested positive for 2 parasites, one of which can be transmitted to humans! AND after thoroughly reviewing his record, I found there was no record for treatment of worms or anything else. Almost $500 later in treatment/medication, updating vaccines and multiple vet visits, he's free and clear of worms, and up to date with vaccines. Meanwhile, ruffhouse rescue DID NOT return calls, txts or attempts to resolve the issue. When someone did finally respond they denied it, and basically told me the only option is to return the dog, maybe so they can get another $650 from another naive adopter. This has been a horrible experience. I question how their animals are being treated and maintained. Please consider another organization and thoroughly investigate their ethical practices as well as the condition of their dogs.

My neighbor Jodi and my dog George passed away during the same summer. I learned about Ruff House because my neighbor used to share their fb posts. I wanted to donate money in their honor, so I tracked RH down at an adoption event at Bethpage's Old Village Restoration. I was impressed with how passionate the volunteers were. Of course I was familiar with the big rescues, but something about this group, particularly the Director, impressed me and I wanted to be part of this rescue. In fact, even though I live 15 minutes from North Shore Animal league and Little Shelter, I was driving 35 minutes one to four times a week to be part of this dedicated rescue. For a rescue of its' size RH really makes a difference by saving animals that were going to die in the shelter system. Over the 2 years I have volunteered there, I have seen hundreds of animals get adopted and while they wait, they are cared for by this group. No animal leaves without ID tags and a microchip. RH's spay and neuter initiative is run week after week by the Director herself, and she was even cited by the ASPCA for the rescue's successful efforts. This is a rescue that is not fancy, but it gets the job done, day after day, week after week. My 2nd dog was adopted from there after a few months of me volunteering there, so I am also a client. Ruff House is a great rescue and should be commended for all its efforts and success in the rescue world.

We can't say enough great things about Ruff House! We adopted two awesome dogs after a very thorough family screening. I have worked in the pet industry since the late 1990s and they still put our family up to a thorough litmus test before they would allow us to adopt any animals. Even though the organization is still fairly young, they do an amazing job saving hundreds upon hundreds of dogs (and now cats!) every year from kill shelters. They make sure that each and every animal gets the best chance for a fresh start. They never give up on their rescues. I interact with a lot of wonderful shelters and agencies in the course of my work, but they do stand out as being extra exceptional. They have very devoted volunteers and are very responsive; you never wait long for a reply. If you are looking to adopt a rescue dog or cat, they will help you to find the perfect fit. Adopt don't shop and please consider Ruff House Rescue when you are adopting or donating.

We have adopted 1 dog and are on the way to our 2nd dog from Ruff House Rescue. In addition, I have been a volunteer for the last 3 years helping out at the rescue. RHR gives love and care to the dogs they rescue and they also carefully select the adopter that will take home one of their special dogs. The dog we are fostering to adopt was a dog no one wanted, with a cataract, 5+ years old, and missing teeth. RHR saved this dog from a high kill shelter and brought it to their rescue and have given her the greatest opportunities to remedy all her medical limitations. No other shelter wanted this dog, but RHR will always find an adopter that matches each dog, cute or not-so-cute, athletic or handicapped, puppy, young adult, adult or senior, pitbulls or poodles. They love and care about saving lives and finding forever homes. If you want to adopt a dog from a rescue that cares, RHR is the rescue for you.

My family and I were suffering from the sudden loss of our beloved 8 yr old Golden Retriever Isabella. Since her sister, 10 yr old Maggie, was so depressed that she wouldn't even eat we knew we had to act fast. I did some research online and sent out several applications to many different rescues. Well, Ruff House Rescue was the ONLY rescue to get back to me by the next morning! I had a volunteer call me that same day and by that weekend ( I applied on a Thursday ) I was at Ruff House meeting all their doggies! The kennel was clean and all the dogs were wagging their tails, clean and in good weight. They asked me many questions and made sure their precious baby would be going to a good safe home which made me very happy. The adoption process was timely, organized and I was made to feel very comfortable by all. We adopted Lily, a beautiful brindle terrier mix. She was housebroken ( at about 7 months old ) healthy, happy and knew how to walk on a leash with manners :) Maggie and Lily are now best friends and my family has been able to begin healing from our devastating loss. Lily saved us way more than we saved her. We have Ruff House Rescue to thank for this! I waited weeks until I began receiving responses from the other rescues we applied to. I truly believe if the adoption process hadn't been so smooth, professional and friendly we would've passed up this life changing opportunity. I highly recommend Ruff House Rescue to everyone! You can be sure you'll get a happy, healthy and loving pet from this organization. They really care about each and every animal in their care. The volunteers spend a lot of time with them and give them unconditional love and hands on care every single day! My family and I will be eternally grateful to Ruff House Rescue!!!

When a nonprofit has the ability to make your family whole it's hard to Top that. Our family has adopted, volunteers and fosters dogs for Ruff House Rescue.

Our first dog Cooper was rescued from a High Kill shelter. When he arrived in NY he was in rough shape, sick and very down on life. He was love at first sight, he is now perfectly healthy, one on the most handsome and love dogs out there.

Our second little boy Spot, from Ruff House stole our hearts and never left our house after his litter did. Spot is a special pup, came to NY with some heart issues. Ruff House has not let us or Spot down one bit. They have made sure he saw the best doctors and has been well taken care of.

So they have completed our family for now... Our house is always full of dogs and love. None of it is possible without the work Ruff House Reacue does and the love and care they put behind making sure every dog goes home, happy and safe.

I have adopted two dogs within the past two years and couldn't be happier. everyone at Ruff House is so nice and they really care about the dogs they have for adoption. I think what they do for these dogs requires special people who really want to help. both my dogs came from kill shelters. Ruff House brings these dogs up to New York from kill shelters in the south where they get another chance with loving families. I have and will continue to donate to them and adopt dogs from them. I highly recommend them.

I have been fostering and volunteering for Ruff House over a year now and I am unbelievable impressed at how caring, kind and compassionate they are to all of the dogs and cats that come in. Everyone works tirelessly to ensure wonderful homes for these animals, and they do an amazing job at placing the right pet with the right family. Love Ruff House and love fostering babies for them!

I honestly don't know where to start...Ruff house rescue has changed our lives. We as a family have always had dogs all rescues but Ruff House rescue not only welcomed us to their fantastic organization but gave me my beautiful girl Chanel. I am a mother of three boys and I finally got my princess and she is in every sense of the word a princess. Melissa and Diane and the volunteers at Ruff House rescue have taught my children the importance of volunteering and because of their social media pages I was lucky enough to not only make a great friend but have Chanel be reunited with her sister Chelsea. This rescue group is so special I have and always will recommend them to anyone that's looking to rescue a dog they truly are angels

An amazing rescue where many hours are spent tirelessly caring for animals by so many people but the women who run this organization pour their hearts and souls into every animal. It is such a great organization to work with it is so overwhelming the amount of work that they do every day no matter how early or late simply a remarkable rescue!

I adopted a rescue pup from Ruff House Rescue last May and saw how the volunteers and Director truly cared for each and every pup, while they were there and where they were going with their new adopted families. I started volunteering there and got hooked. I since adopted another rescue from Ruff House and I believe my family is complete and volunteer at least 5 days a week, giving my life so much more purpose. Loving these scared pups, socializing them, walking and cleaning up after them and seeing how wonderful their lives are with their forever families has shown me unconditional love in a way I never knew. Ruff House Rescue has amazing volunteers and is funded by personal donations and adoptions. Rescue is 24/7 and our Director has dedicated her life to this amazing cause and won't stop until there are no more kill shelters, all dogs spay and neutered, no more stranded pups, in other words her plight will never end.

Ruff house rescue has changed my life. Being a part of this organization and having the opportunity to help in so many different ways is truly rewarding. So many lives are saved each year all because of the dedicated volunteers. It is amazing to see all of the pups we rescue find their fur-ever homes.
