I have had the pleasure of knowing Mutima Jackson-Anderson and witness her calling in life. Mutima started the foundation in honor of her beloved mother Ms. Ruby. Mutima decided to honor her Mom in an extraordinary way by becoming a teacher, advocator, motivator and help to prevent this dreaded disease. From the moment Mutima started the foundation she has not slowed down. In just a few short years she has taken her brainchild from a community outreach to a well respected organization in the healthcare community. Mutima has been asked to attend and speak at various symposiums that not only benefit her, but benefits the people she tirelessly works to educate and assist. What makes Mutima different from a lot of leaders of organizations is her drive, love and passion to help and prevent others from this disease. She doesn't just talk the talk, she most certainly walks the walk everyday. Her dedication to finding the healthiest foods and also incorporating cooking classes with a chef to further educate the community speaks to her mission. She hasn't stopped at diet she also included exercise classes. Even if they're low impact she stresses the importance of getting the body moving. I am always so impressed with her dedication to helping others and zeal for them to build and live healthier lifestyles. I think a lot of people aren't aware of the impact of how they take care of themselves, eating and exercising is in direct correlation to their health. It seems obvious, but its not obvious for everyone. The Ruby A Neeson Diabetes Awareness Foundation Inc. bridges that gap by teaching about diet, exercise and putting health first. After being diagnosed with Pre-Diabetes and also having gestational diabetes with two of my pregnancies I knew I had to make some lifestyle changes. I began a search for information to build my level of knowledge on the diseases. While doing an internet search information came up about the Ruby A. Neeson Diabetes Awareness Foundation and it C.U.B.S. support group. I loved the idea of becoming a part of a support group. A group with a common goal of learning more about diabetes. I enrolled in an upcoming meeting that was conveniently located at a near-by library.

At the meeting I was introduced to Mutima Anderson-Jackson, the founder of the Ruby A. Neeson Diabetes Awareness Foundation and was instantly drawn to her personality and her dedication to build awareness of diabetes and the preventive measures that can be taken. We watched the movie, “The Debilitator”, which increased my knowledge of the diseases and practices that prevent Type 2 Diabetes. Each meeting is full of information including delicious diabetic friendly recipes. I learned that eating right and exercising was key in decreasing my chances of attaining the disease that my mother and several others in my family had and have. I began increasing my physical activities and trying the new recipe ideas I received at the awareness foundation and support group meetings.

I now proudly volunteer as the Community Outreach Director for the Ruby A. Neeson Diabetes Awareness Foundation. As the Community Outreach Director my job is to create activities in the community to build awareness to diabetes and the fact that it is now an epidemic.
