haiti literacy project - haiti literacy project- from july through december, we continued to operate and support the first rural community library in the central plateau. We paid for and advised the librarian, purchased creole and french books, added furniture, repaired the air conditioning multiple times, paid for supplies, and repaired the white board projector. Our activities ended on december 31, 2016. In january, we began transitioning to new work. The village episcopal priest is currently supervising the library in the central plateau and paying a new librarian's salary. In september 2016 pilh began preliminary conversations with a new collaborator summits education, a 501(c) 3, with an in-country director and staff. With this collaboration we are moving into more rural areas in the plateau, away from the national highway to villages and schools often only accessible by goat paths. Families here live on 2. 00 a day and the region's illiteracy rate is 55%. Since march 2017, pilh has gradually begun to partner to serve 42 rural schools in the central plateau and some of their 9,773 students and 345 teachers. By june 30th, 750 creole picture books were divided among classes, a us book donation drive for the fall was planned, starting a teacher resource center discussed, and furnishing mini-libraries for early primary grades planned. Pilh's mission to add library services to the rural countryside is moving forward.
