At ROOTS Young Adult Shelter, the cold tile of the basement floor and the vinyl mats where 27 homeless youth sleep every night, doesn’t look like much. It wasn’t until I spent my evenings preparing meals, providing shower supplies and sleeping alongside guests as an overnight volunteer, did I realize how important this place is. It’s safety from the streets, and a place where the stigma of homelessness is left at the door. It’s where our community surrounds youth who’ve been abandoned, abused, or misunderstood and helps them find the stability to move forward. These kids have so much potential.
