Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animals, Wildlife Sanctuaries

Mission: Rooterville's mission is to encourage compassion for ALL animals. Factory farming is the greatest source of the most egregious animal cruelty on the planet, killing over 10 billion animals every year just in the USA. It is the leading cause of environmental pollution and destruction of the rain forest. Eating meat/dairy is the cause of over 95% of human health problems, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease and most cancers. The best thing we can do to help animals, our own health and the environment is to adopt a plant-based diet!

A beyond amazing place. Heaven on earth, not only for the rescued piggies, moos, chickens, goats and turkeys, but for all who enter the gates. Spending time with these beautiful animals is truly a special gift. Elaine is one of the kindest souls I've ever met in my entire life, and I aspire to one day be even half the woman that she is.

We have visited Rooterville and enjoyed interacting with the animals. All are well cared for and happy. We donated comforters that are needed when northeasterly winds blow cold during winter months as well as Fig Newtons which are the pigs favorite (and hide their medications nicely). All the workers are dedicated and compassionate. They are very thankful for any help you can give them.

I have been volunteering at Rooterville the last few months and absolutely love and look forward to each visit. This sanctuary is like a well oiled machine. Everything is very organized and the animals receive excellent care. Elaine West is wonderful and never seems to run out of energy caring for all the animals. All the employees are great and very helpful if you have questions. I’ve always loved pigs,

The kindergarten classes at St. Patrick school have had an amazing opportunity to learn about the concepts of an animal sanctuary and reinforce respecting life in all its myriad forms. As the children tour this amazing facility they see the clean and spacious environment, the well fed and happy animals and the care, attention and dignity that is afforded to every animal. There is no fighting for food or attention. Their needs are met. I have never seen such contented animals.

Rooterville is a true sanctuary with beautiful gardens, tons of shade trees, and lots of happy animals. The staff has always been very helpful, kind, and considerate. They genuinely care about their animals, their visitors, and the mission of Rooterville. It is such a peaceful, serene place to spend time and learn. Not only is it is my favorite place to visit and volunteer, it is also a privilege to do so.

This is by far the BEST farm animal sanctuary I have ever been to - we are able to interact with the animals on a more intimate level than if they were behind cages. I get in lots of piggy belly rubs and pass out treats to all of the resident critters, which makes them uber happy. We even joined as members and give a monthly donation we were so impressed with Rooterville and the care they provide. If I could give more stars, I would.

Where to begin... Rooterville not only rescues and rehabilitates a variety of animals, the fabulous owners teach both children and adults about compassionate living and eating (free of cost) at the farm. I have volunteered at the farm a few times, and look forward to taking my daughter there when she is old enough to be of service to the amazing and unforgettable animals who call Rooterville HOME.

Last November (2017), I was interning with Vegan Outreach and we were traveling throughout the state of Florida going to various college campuses. Each time, I am impressed with the amount of care the animals receive and the dedication of the staff and volunteers. The pigs and other animals are treated so well, and I am happy to be a monthly donor and to spend as much time as possible with the animals at the sanctuary!

I have loved pigs from the time I was a little girl. This place it's heaven to me. The pigs and all the animals are are so loved there. The grounds are also beautiful and a pleasure to walk around. The people are so dedicated to the animals.
I have volunteered once at a fund raiser and walked the grounds with fruits and veggies and gave out to the piggies and chickens.
I'm so thankful to be able to go to a place and be surrounded by pigs!!!
Thank you Rooterville.

We went for a visit two months ago, and what a fantastic experience! We were accompanied by one of the volunteers there. Not only did he introduce to us all the animals, but also shared with us the stories behind Rooterville. We were able to get belly-rub all the piggies and fed the giant Tinsel. We really appreciate the idea of letting the piggies go free in the sanctuary, as that should, in our opinion, be the natural way for any animals' lives. Of course, for giants like Tinsel, boundaries are needed, yet sanctuaries should make it as comfortable as possible for these unfortunate but beautiful souls, brought to this sorry world by human's unchecked gluttony. For that, we feel that Rooterville is one of the best sanctuaries we have ever known.

I am So Greatful for Rooterville. I was so afraid for the future of our 2 rather Large farm pigs. We took them in to save them from becoming BBQ,, but when our house burned down & my husband died,, i found myself having to rehome them. Plenty of people were willing to take them, but only for food. Having already lost so much,, i couldn't bare to face what was going to happen to the girls. Rooterville came to the rescue giving Ruby & Ballerina a forever SAFE home. THANKYOU ROOTERVILLE ♥

She knew all of their names and they clearly loved her back, laying down for a belly rub as soon as she came near! We were especially impressed at how well run and well kept everything was, this sanctuary is over 30 acres big and they have 300+ pigs plus goats, cows, ducks, chickens, dogs, everything! They are a very organized organization too and everyone that works there loves what they do. What a wonderful experience, we will be back again!

Rooterville is a well taken care of sanctuary where the animals receive the care they need. Elaine West shows her face as the face of Rooterville but without Doni, the sanctuary manager nothing would be possible. Doni is an amazing woman that always stays when everyone else quits because of the toxic work environment founder Elaine West exudes. If there is anyone out there that would like to take Elaine's position, that would be amazing, and welcomed!!!!!

I made my first visit to Rooterville in May and the event really changed my life. Seeing the animals up close, making contact with them, and hearing their stories really brought home to me the reality that they are the same as we humans -- in every way that matters. They have families, interests, and desires, and want to enjoy a life free from pain and want, just like we do. Elaine, Doni, Lynn, Dane, and all the staff and volunteers were friendly, informative and inviting. My friends and I slept in the "barn" enclosure and it was magical to wake up to the sounds of happy animals every morning. I highly recommend this sanctuary to anyone who wants to experience the natural beauty and contentment of farm animals living freely to express themselves -- the way it should be. Thanks for all you do, Rooterville! ♥

We finally got around to visiting Rooterville, and we are so glad we did! The love for the residents is evident in all the hard work that goes on there. People who have complained about it being dirty obviously don't go outside very much, let alone to see how animals live outdoors.( by the way, this is NOT a petting zoo!) We found it to be clean and peaceful. We plan on visiting and volunteering regularly.

After looking at the other reviews, I thought Rooterville would be a kind of fantastic petting zoo, but it wasn’t like that at all. We were very surprised. I never write negative reviews, but I think this may be a public service. My family and I love going to animal sanctuaries and zoos, and this is the worst one we’ve ever been to.

It was honestly filthy, gross, and it’s full of pigs swimming around in a big mud puddle. Some of the pigs are pushy and scared our youngest. They only have two ponies, and one of them is too scared to get near you. Plus they don’t tell you they’re Christian and vegan, but those are the focuses of their educational outreach. They spent a lot of time trying to preach to us about being a good Christian by never eating meat again. If you want to get preached to at a dirty, stinky place where you ruin your shoes and get pig snot on your clothes, then perhaps a trip to Rooterville is fine. Otherwise, go to that impressive wild animal sanctuary outside Miami. That was incredible. Or just go to any of the other sanctuaries.

I have been following Rooterville for about a year... They are Amazing Huge Hearted people, who are very Passionate about their Love for animals. Just for example their recent rescue, Precious "Lucy" the Sweet little piggy with pox. Amazing treatment and recovery. I have a situation where I have recently injured my back and through treatment have learned that I also have Degenerative Disc Disease. I contacted Rooterville and explained my situation and the fact that I have several pets that myself and my family own and care for, two of which are female potbelly pigs. Without a hesitation I was told to bring them to their rescue. I will be bringing them as soon as I can provide safe transport. These 2 piggies are part of our family and I am heartbroken that I have to do this, however I have a 10 year old and several other animals and my husband works out of state as well as our families are all in New England. So not having help right now has become extremely difficult on me. I am very comfortable with my decision to place my Beloved Piggies in the care of Rooterville and will plan to Donate as well as visit/volunteer when I can. Again Rooterville is Amazing xoxo

We have donated, volunteered and spent time at Rooterville. The owners, Dale and Elaine West, are superb. The animals are well fed, cared for, socialized and paid attention to. The facilities are always clean and well kept, and my family and I learn something new every time we visit.

We came upon Rooterville by chance. We adopted a baby pot belly pig who we loved and cherished from a farm near our home in Clermont. We named her Penelope. Unfortunately, Penelope wanted to be the queen of our herd and would challenge our daughter. After nearly a year of trying to work it out and get past this challenge, we had very little success. We found ourselves having to make a very tough decision - finding a new home for our little piggy we loved so much. We tried finding a home locally, but after hearing horror stories of pigs being adopted then slaughtered in numerous horrifying ways, decided against it. That's when we found Rooterville. Elaine tried to help us get past the dominance issues we were having with our pig and taught us new methods of trying to tame her. That didn't work. After numerous conversations and lots of unsuccessful added efforts by our family, Elaine agreed to take in Penelope.

Penelope has grown and flourished at Rooterville. She is no longer aggressive towards others and seems to have found her place there. Dale and Elaine continue to take care of the animals and help those in any way they can. They feed their animals fresh foods and make sure they are satisfied nutritionally and mentally. Dale and Elaine are educators and care takers. Rooterville is one of the cleanest facilities I have seen that deals with animals....as I am sure keeping up after animals - whether it be a cat, dog, pig, or any type of animal sanctuary - can be an all day event.

They do it though. The place looks great, there's always something to learn, and most importantly, the animals they take in are cared for, nourished, loved and happy.

Rooterville saved my pig's life....we would have never put her down or given her to someone who we would suspect of doing Penelope harm. But we know Penelope is loved, and safe and in a place where it's much easier for her to just be a pig.

We'll definitely be up again soon.

I work at a Horse Rescue facility in Florida. We do a good job with horses but our solo pig (rescued from euthanasia by a good hearted animal services employee) was not getting what he needed to live a good life. Francis grew from a baby to maturity VERY FAST and we knew he needed to be in the right place to thrive. No one was willing to take on Francis as a pet locally ( we were very worried about the motives of some people who did make inquiries :( After a thorough search we found ROOTERVILLE and although resources were tight and there are sooo many pigs that need a home: Elaine/Dale agreed to give Francis his forever home. A fellow board member and myself traveled to visit Francis in his new residence. We could not believe the paradise where he now lives. The folks at Rooterville work hard to create and sustain a welcoming facility where the animals COME FIRST. They do an incredible job with education and outreach. I always try to remember them with a check when I can. They really do fabulous work and deserve to be recognized as an extremely well run sanctuary.

I met the folks at Rooterville a couple months ago. I volunteer at a large animal rescue in another part of the state, we needed to find a forever home for Francis (a piglet found by animal services that grew too large for us to care for properly). The folks at Rooterville worked with me to adopt, transport (not so easy) and neuter Francis. I took the 4 hour trip to visit Francis in his new home at Rooterville and I was amazed at what I saw. Elaine and Dale have created a heaven on earth for pigs and a few other large rescued animals. They work extremely hard to make their sanctuary a healthy, safe and beautiful environment for their critters. They are committed to their mission of vegetarian lifestyle and to prevent animal cruelty. They have outstanding educational outreach. These are truly humans acting humanely. We owe them our gratitude and support for how much they contribute. They did not choose an easy life nor an easy mission but I have to say, they do an excellent job day in, day out. I have been there, I know :)

After my daughter got a pig for a pet there was little information on the internet that could be trusted as true since the pig she got was misrepresented as being, at the most, 20 pounds at full growth. I'm guessing at about 175 pounds past that 20 pounds we became suspicious of any information we found on the internet. Rooterville was one of the FB pages we came across that gave sound and great advise on what we needed to know from feeding piggy, her name is Emily, to why she does what she does. The one thing I learned is Emily goes to bed at dusk and doesn't get up until dawn. Really helped knowing that she really wasn't sick. I look forward to the post this page puts out because I learn a lot from them. I would like to see them win this award as they are very valuable to my daughter and myself. Thanks Rooterville, you've made owning this piggy fun and a learning experience. she's been a blast to have around.

In February of 2007 I lost my sister to cancer and because of that I took ownership of all her animals one of which was a potbellied pig, and mean as they come. After a period of a few months which the pig needed to acclimate himself to his new home he became a beloved pet of mine. Unfortunately he died a few years later at a ripe old age. I came upon Dale and Elaine West owners of Rooterville in search of another pig that needed a home and what I came to see was both beautiful and pathetic at the same time. The farm was corner to corner pigs and dogs and chickens and it was like they all had died and gone to heaven and probably for most of them that is exactly what happened! Every animal I saw was happy and healthy and living the dream....and the ones that made it possible were two people that had given their all to make it possible. Thing is that for the majority of the mostly pigs there it was their last chance and Dale and Elaine could not deny them the life they deserved. Now however they are in dire straits and the last option for all these animals is now in jeopardy! THey both have given every bit of energy and money they have and it is a sacrifice that few of us would be willing to make. Please, whomever reads this story,do what you can to help this organization to get back on its feet so they can continue to care for these animals that others chose to ignore. For the hundred or so pot bellied pigs as well as countless other thrown away animals they are there last resort!

In the many years I've been involved in animal rescue I've never met anyone as passionate about what they do as Dale and Elaine West at Rooterville. Each time I've visited the rescue I've been amazed at how clean and orderly the entire farm is. Their organizational skills, attention to detail and their overall dedication to the welfare of each animal in their care sets a model image for all of us. They are the definition of compassion.
