I had the unfortunate circumstance to need the services of the Ronald McDonald House in Lubbock, Texas. I was referred by a social worker at the hospital because of my child's unexpected stay in the NICU for two weeks. Without the RMDH, I would not have been able to be in close enough proximity to be able to breastfeed my son. I am positive he did so well because they offered this service.

At the house, I met many women in a similar predicament. The rooms were clean, and so many people in the area donate their time to help clean the facility and all the community organizations rotate to bring us food for dinner. Really wonderful people. They provide fridges to store breastmilk. There is a shuttle service that serves both of the children's hospitals in the area -- Covenant Children's Hospital and University Medical Center. They have a great laundry facility, and a clean well-kept kitchen and dining area. They provide a breast pump if you don't have one. It's really a labor of love. I looked at the tax forms for 2011, and it's as I expected. There is some pay to the people who help to operate it, but mostly it's their donation in time.

I am now a donor because I know what a wonderful service it provides to mothers (and fathers) in need of some place to stay close to their child, due to unexpected events. We also bring food and diapers and paper towels when we can.
