We had an amazing experience with Romania Animal Rescue, and we can't thank them enough for the kindness and support they showed us and two stray dogs while we were on vacation in Romania. Their incredible work goes beyond just rescuing animals; they truly go the extra mile to ensure every animal gets the help they need.

While staying in Romania, we found a stray dog near our cabin and wanted to help, but weren't sure how. Bringing a dog to Belgium requires proper vaccinations, health checks, and paperwork. We reached out to Romania Animal Rescue, and Nancy Janes, the CEO, responded swiftly. She offered to cover all the vaccinations, paperwork, and health needs for the dog if we were willing to foster it. Her efficiency and willingness to help were heartwarming.

The plan was to take the dog, which we named Gypsy, to their Center of Hope Veterinary Hospital in Piteasca, where their team would take care of everything. They even partnered with another charity, Le Woef, to arrange transportation to the Netherlands, where we would pick up Gypsy and foster him until he found his forever home.

In a twist of fate, the day before we were set to take Gypsy to the hospital, we found an abandoned puppy while motorcycling—a tiny pup we named Biker. She was just a few months old and clearly wouldn't survive on her own. We reached out to Nancy again, hoping she could help us switch plans. She was incredibly understanding and made arrangements for Biker instead, seeing that the puppy needed immediate help. The next day, we brought Biker to the Center of Hope, where Dr. Aurelian Stefan and the team welcomed her (Biker) with open arms.

In the last (rainy) days of our vacation, Gypsy was getting more and more attached to us, and we realized we couldn't leave him behind either. We contacted Nancy one more time, despite it being late at night, asking if we could still bring Gypsy in. Nancy got in touch with Dr. Stefan. They made it happen, and we were able to bring him to the hospital the next day.

Gypsy and Biker both received top-notch care at the Center of Hope. We were updated with pictures, videos, and progress reports, and it was clear how much the staff genuinely cared for their wellbeing. Eventually, both dogs made their way to the Netherlands. By the time we would pick up Biker, Le Woef had already found a family for her, so we only needed to foster Gypsy. Gypsy is still looking for a home.

Nancy, Dr. Stefan, and the entire team at Romania Animal Rescue and the Center of Hope have hearts of gold. They work tirelessly to save countless animals, running large spay/neuter campaigns, educating communities, and providing much-needed medical care—all funded through donations. Their dedication is truly inspiring, and their compassion made all the difference for Gypsy, Biker, and for us as well.

Please consider supporting this incredible organization. Romania Animal Rescue changes lives—both for the animals they save and the people they help. The animals of Romania will be forever grateful for your support!

My husband and I (from USA) spent 2 weeks volunteering with RAR and we were amazed at the efficiency, professionalism, and dedication by the team. The vets and staff at RAR are very talented at their job, but are also a very welcoming, international community. They had far-reaching influence outside of their clinic in Piteasca, with mobile campaigns to rural Romania and training programs for veterinary students from all over the world. RAR is very worthy of your time and your donations.

This is the story of Alba, a dog with a sad story, saved thanks to the HAH project and the kind help of RAR offered to romanian dogs.
Alba was a sweet puppy abandoned at only a couple of months old, in the parking area of my workplace. A place at the edge of the Craiova. She was very happy about all the people around there, but as there is not safe for puppies, someone hit her with the car and let her there suffering. She stayed hurt one week, some people saw her suffering but nobody cared until I found out and rushes her to Family Vet. There we were received with a lot of empathy and received the best treatment. Sadly her hind leg was destroyed beyond repair and had to be amputated. Her pain didn’t end there as she started to show other problems also. So we went back for more investigations, X-rays, blood tests, ultrasounds and even a special ultrasound with a heart doctor. As the things didn’t seem to look good, Aurelian recommended a free CT Scan at COH which was decisive in establishing the diagnosis: part of her liver was pushing the lungs and accumulated a lot of life threatening fluid. Another kind help from Ruth (because I don’t have a car and didn’t have the financial possibilities :( ) helped Alba arrive to the Hope Center and she got her diagnosis of diaphragmatic hernia.
She went thru a very difficult surgery to fix her problems but she was lucky and now Alba is recovering well in my house, being as happy and friendly as always.
I didn’t had the money for all this because we have many animals in our care and the little helped is not enough even for food, so Alba became a social case helped by HAH. This meant her life and could be saved also thanks to the dedication of our vets. Thank you so much for making this miracles happen ❤️

Since joining Romania Animal Rescue, first as a volunteer, then as a Board Member, and now as its Vice President, I wake up every morning with a huge purpose and drive.
I feel so fortunate to be part of this extremely hard-working charity. All of us, our President, others, and I are all volunteers working for free. All the donations we receive go to those in need…the less fortunate or stray dogs and cats of Romania.
We strive to spay/neuter over 10K dogs and cats per year and we provide veterinary care to over 4000 animals per year. On top of that we work on helping many rescuers that care for dozens of dogs with food and vaccines.
I am so proud to be part of Romania Animal Rescue.
Sincerely, Ingrid Zohar, Vice President, Board Member, Volunteer

After a year of research to find the right charity that helps out in Romania, I was lucky to find Romania Animal Rescue (aka Animal Spay Neuter International). After getting to know Nancy and learning more about the charity, I joined as a volunteer and shortly after went to Romania and participated in several spayathons. Words cannot express the hard work, dedication and passion this charity’s vets, vet techs and local staff/volunteers have. Also the incredible positive impact that RAR has in Romania (and other impoverished countries such as Bulgaria, Greece, Dominican Republic) is due to the key focus areas of the charity: Spay/Neuter and Animal Care. These two key programs, especially Spay/Neuter, is key in preventing thousands of unwanted puppies/kittens being born on the streets of Romania and other impoverished areas that the charity helps in. This charity does SO MUCH with SO LITTLE, it is amazing!!! This is the BEST Charity every and I am FOREVER part of it!

An amazing team of clinicians and volunteers trying to shift spaying and neutering norms in Romania by spaying and neutering dogs and cats at their veterinary hospital and with their mobile clinic, building connections to local
lawmakers and other stakeholders, and supporting the extraordinarily kind-hearted local people who shelter and feed strays.
I am impressed with their communication efforts sharing every aspect of the work, including the most heartbreaking!!

Thanks to RAR, dba Animal Spay and Neuter Intl we were able to rescue Billy from Romania and give him better life in USA.
End of February this year I contacted Nancy Janes to ask her if she would be able to help me finding a shelter for Billy who was taken by the new owners from the property where he happily lived until then, to a parking yard, put in chain during the day and let loose at night to guard. He was in deplorable shape without proper food or water.
I found out about him from my niece who was trying to help by posting his story on FB, trying to find him a home.
Nancy is a wonderful person an animal lover and advocate. She said “I can help bring him to you”…. And she did
She put everything in motion, connecting me with all the people who were involved in the rescue.
Billy was then taken to Center of Hope Animal Hospital where dr Aurelian took such good care of him. There he was diagnosed with Anaplasmosis and received treatment with antibiotics for three weeks. Dr Aurelian also removed a big salivary cyst that was found in the neck area. He, like Nancy is a wonderful human being with so much love and dedication to animals.
The care, the communication and love this dog revived at COH was outstanding.
Billy arrived to Miami a month later, on March 22, 2024. In the beginning he was very shy, sad looking. With patience and love he is much better.
We are forever grateful to RAR, COH, Nancy Janes, Dr. Aurelian Stefan and all the people involved.
Thank you so much

I was very impressed to learn about RAR’s extraordinary mission to rescue strays, provide medical care, and help with adoptions. Nancy has gracefully offered to facilitate a fundraiser for the shelter for US based donors and every donation helped towards the extremely challenging endeavor of building a new shelter from ground up. I am very grateful for RAR’s tireless work on two continents to help so many souls in need and wish them continuous success in the future.

This organization has saved my cat and my family! Without this support, we would’ve lost the little angel for whom we wouldn’t have had the necessary resources to take action because of other health and personal issues. Our 13 year old epileptic cat has some infected teeth which have led to huge weight loss and starvation, he was unable to eat properly for a long while, we didn’t know how to help, the time was limited. Now he has an appointment for surgery. We cannot be more grateful for such an unexpected support especially in this critical time of need!☺️

Romanian Animal Rescue is the most wonderful charity that deserves a five star rating for every different area it covers regarding animal welfare among low income communities throughout Romania. Nearly 100,000 stray dogs and cats or those pets belonging to low income families have been sterilized using their free sterilization programmes. Free for the recipients but sponsored by donors from many countries including Romanians themselves. So many innocent puppies and kittens have been saved by never being born only to suffer. This incredible work helps and involves local communities on a practical level too. In many rural villages there are no vets so R.A.R vets travel hundreds of miles in order to perform spayathons. The incredible outstanding vet team go above and beyond to do this. They are second to none. led by the dedicated and inspiring Dr Aurelian and head vet Roxanna. On a separate level the amazing work carried out by the team in Bucharest at the Centre of Hope the animal hospital, many lives are saved during complicated surgery by more dedicated and outstanding vets too. Animals with no hope and terrible injuries are given a second chance. All this needs funding so please look to your heart and donate and make animal lives matter....as they do by RAR. Five stars...absolutely.

A team of agels! The only organization I have met that indeed helps social cases and that trully cares. I went to them crying with a little dog I found sick and abandoned in the yard of the fire department. He was sick, shivering and was full of ticks. Not only did they take care of the little dog, but the dog is now happily adopted in the UK with a loving family. Picture of Charlie before and after.

I see poor people going there with their sick animals, not having money to treat them. The center never turns their back on them. I see love and care in all that they do and I hope they grow bigger and bigger, it’s people like this who will save our country’s dogs from misery and suffering.

RAR is an inspiring organization that is deeply passionate about their mission. A few individuals formed to conquer a heartbreaking community and animal welfare problem in Romania. Their quest seemed impossible; that did not deter them - it motivated them to find solutions, and to often create their own miracles. Romania has the highest number of abandoned and broken dogs in the world (rated by size and human population). There are no quick-fixes to such a devastating issue. RAR has built a dedicated and skilled team that is tackling the problem by running "Spayathons" where thousands of dogs (and) cats are neutered, free to the public. RAR is educating the younger generation about the importance of animal welfare. The community is offered free or low cost pet care. RAR helps sick and injured abandoned animals. RAR works with partners to get animals adopted into good families in Romania and abroad. RAR cares and is making a difference. Our support is critical to their mission.

They started as a grass roots charity in California, then, with donor support, they built Center of Hope, a homeless animal hospital in Bucharest. Spay/Neuter is their focus but surgery for injured or sick dogs and cats occurs too. Veterinarians from all over the world train with their remarkable team. Over 100,000 spay/neuters have been done. Mobile vans travel to Craiova and elsewhere for clinics. Food is donated monthly to a large animal shelter. This all volunteer group gets my money as a donor and high praise for preventing the suffering of dogs and cats born on the streets only to starve, breed, become injured or die.

This organization began with nothing but a vision less than 20 years ago. That vision, along with a corps of dedicated veterinary staff, donors and volunteers has contributed to a reduction in the number of stray animals in Romania by spaying and neutering as many as possible; over 100,000 to date. While pursuing this goal RAR was able to build a state of the art veterinary clinic and is now working on an addition to be dedicated solely to spay/neuter. There is also an educational component for school children, training in spay/neuter surgeries for veterinarians and a Homeless Animal Hospital for injured or sick animals. The services are free to the animals and their owners (if any), and the people served are learning that it is okay to care for and be kind to animals. I believe that RAR is changing the way animals are treated in Romania as well as reducing the population of unwanted animals. In my opinion, this charity is the best ever.

Following a church trip to Romania I became aware of the devastating plight of the Romanian street dogs. Divine Providence led me to RAR, and I have been involved almost from the "ground up." Financially this charity is above reproach. The president/CEO, veterinary staff and volunteers are among the most caring and talented individuals I have ever had the privilege of working with. The focus of the group's work is free spay neuter as the only way to stop animal overpopulation. However, other services under the RAR/ASNI umbrella are veterinary training, homeless animal hospital and education. Donors can be assured that their hard-earned funds are used only for the betterment of the Romanian animals. Please visit the web-site or face book for updated information on programs and the new facility being built outside of Bucharest.

I have been involved with RAR/ASNI for 10 years, and the charity has just gone from strength to strength in that time. 6 years ago they built a spay and neuter/homeless animal hospital "The Center of Hope" this is the first of its kind in Romania, serving the stray dog and cat population and essentially spaying and neutering as many animals as possible. This is a centre of pure excellence in every way...state of the art equipment and highly qualified compassionate staff! Nothing is too much for them, they go above and beyond their ordinary duties to save and treat as many animals as possible. Romania Animal Rescue is a labour of love for all those involved. To date 100,000 animals have been spayed and neutered and the Center of Hope is currently completing a new extension which will be a center specifically for sterilizations. With their outreach work in the surrounding villages using a specially adapted mobile animal hospital "Hope" to reach the outer communities around Bucharest. Educating school children on animal welfare as well as training vets from various countries in higly skilled sterilization techniques, no stone is left unturned!
I am very proud and extremely honoured to be a part of this wonderful organisation. Extremely Highly recommended and a baseline of excellence in techniques, practices and vision.

I have been involved with RAR for 10 years, and i have never known such passionate, enthusiastic and dedicated people as those that work for this charity. From the Veterinary Staff, Vet Techs and Volunteers you will always get 200% commitment to the animals! Their compassion knows no bounds and it is not unusual for them to work 12+ hour days when a spay and neuter campaign is going on. Their goal is to reduce the amount of animals being born to stray and to operate on as many as humanly possible. As well as sterilization campaigns they have in the past 5 years built and established a first of its kind Animal Hospital in Romania. The Center of Hope treats and cares for strays as well as animals who's owners cannot afford veterinary care, for whom the care is free. This is all possible due to wonderful donors who support their endeavours all the way. A truly remarkable charity that deserves all the praise i can give.

This site is titled Great Nonprofits. There is none greater than Romania Animal Rescue. I have followed it and it’s growth for approximately 10 years. During that time, I’ve I have adopted 2 dogs from them. Two strays with no hope. One was emaciated and hairless, the other had been tortured. The evidence of the torture were a cut off ear, a burn scar on his nose, two broken bones in his front leg that went untreated and had left him with a permanent limp. Both of these poor souls had no one to advocate for them until they were taken in and treated by the Center of Hope, the partner of the Romania Animal Rescue. Through their care and then the subsequent appeal for donations, using the pictures and stories of these dogs, I became aware of them and adopted them, and I have no words for the gratitude I feel for this group who saves souls like these every single day. Through spaying and neutering, education and training, they have made more impact on the animals of Romania than any group before or since. They are truly what a non-profit should be.

RAR is a wonderful organization. I volunteered for them in 2012 and soon discovered how passionate and caring they are. It was not just a "job". It was a way of life.

I learned about the emergency concerning stray dogs in Romania. Well over 600,000 dogs and thousands of cats. 64,000 in Bucharest alone. More than any other European country.

I participated in a spay and neuter clinic hosted by RAR in May, 2012. Taking train rides between townships, it was not unusual to see packs of stray dogs of 75-100 roaming the countrysides heading toward the cities in search of food.

We adopted a starving puppy who was living under an abandoned truck who was brought in to the spayathon I volunteered at.

If not for RAR, we never would have met sweet Ayla who grew into a beautiful dog. If not for RAR, there would be 90,000 LESS spayed and neutered dogs in Romania. They are committed, legitimate and best of all love their work. They are heartily recommended and would be grateful for your donations. We donate often and have adopted our second pup from Romania, Arya.

RAR need your help and compassion. Please consider researching the Romanian homeless dog epidemic and try to help RAR. All of us together make a big difference.

I’ve been donating to RAR for years. Romania has a huge number of unwanted dogs and cats. Many dogs are caught brutally by dog catchers and spend the rest of their lives in kill shelters. I’ve adopted 2 but the numbers are overwhelming. The only answer is spay & neuter. RAR visits towns like Tecuci and carries out free sterilisation on hundreds of animals. It makes a difference.

Romania Animal Rescue has done phenomenal things in Romania to help the stray animals. They not only spay and neutered approximately 100,000 animals they have educated the country on the value of Spay and Neuter. They are an example for the rest of the world that needs to be educated on Spay and Neuter. This charity has also helped countless injured animals that needed help and adoption.

This charity has worked miracles in Romania. Conducting almost 100k spay/neuters since inception has drastically reduced the street dog population. Also, they have worked hard to educate the people on taking care of or animals. One amazing women from the USA started this organization that is now recognized all over and they are being asked by other countries to come and help with their spay and neutering. Amazing work !

I do belive that the most efficient way to reduce pain and suffering for dogs/cats in Romania is spay and neuter, so the philosophy of RAR corresponds with mine.

Love, commitment and compassion are essential in order to see on a daily basis the horrible pain and suffering the animals endure and do something about it. They are hands-on in preventing animals from being born into awful conditions by spaying and neutering dogs and cats. They also help every single animal that comes through their doors. After being deployed go Romania and experiencing the harsh reality that Romania has a huge dogs and cats over population problem my coworker and I immediately wanted to help. RAR helped us save 4 dogs off of base and get in contact with a rescue to help more. We were able to participate by volunteering for a spay-a-thon and it was the most humbling experience. Aurelian and his team care so much about the animals they treat and the people who come in without funds to cover costs. They had two emergencies come in while there and still were able to spay over 30 dogs and 10 cats. The dedication and love these guys show to each and every patient is heart warming.

This organisation is outstanding. Romania is a wonderful country - but has huge amounts of desperate poverty and deprivation.
The team isnt just about helping animals in need. By helping the animals they help the people. They educate, they inform, and they help people who are struggling financially to keep their pets, and to prevent more animals being born that cannot be accommodated, and often cant be afforded.
The team goes to the people. It goes to all who need help, without judgment or condemnation, but instead brings hope and love, and raises people up.
It may look like its only an animal charity - but it is far more. Its a humanitarian charity.

I had the great good fortune to meet Dr. Aurelian Stefan and Nancy Janes several years ago. They and everyone else working with RAR are some of the most dedicated, hardworking, compassionate people I've ever known. Dr. Stefan digs in, with his team, and does extensive spay and neuter programs all over Romania and beyond. He and his brother have managed to build a wonderful new clinic, where they help so many animals, including those who cannot afford veterinary care. Dr.Stefan, as busy as he is, still manages to keep a vibrant presence on social media, which in turn helps educate so many people, and also helps bring in funds from multiple countries to keep his compassionate programs going. Romania is one of the most difficult countries for a dog to live in. There are so many strays, and there are also many people there who do not care for animals. In this very challenging environment, Dr. Stefan, his staff, and Nancy Janes still never give in to hopelessness or depression. They go on, day after day, fighting the good fight, with all the strength and resources they have. I have long admired RAR, and have been a donor to their cause, ever since I met them.

My heart broke when I saw the damaged and disgarded dog population when I visited Romania in 2017. I wanted to learn more and figure out how I could be part of the solution. In my research I found RAR. I even accompanied them on a "Spayathon" May 2019. I rejoice in saying that they neutered approx 10,000 animals last year. That means hundreds of thousands not born to suffer. I also see the compassionate care of sick and injured dogs, some homeless that are taken from the streets, and some loved pets of people who cannot afford expensive treatments, neutering, and vaccinations. The RAR team is professional and compassionate; they do so much every day to make a difference and they will make great strides in eliminating the very sad homeless animal problem in and around Romania.

We volunteered with the campaign in October 2018, in Sliven Bulgaria.
It was an amazing event from start to finish.
When we first entered the pop up clinic we could not believe how well everything was prepared and thought out. The cages for the animals were beautifully lined with cosy blankets and even foil wrap for the cats. The dog beds were plush and cosy, at the end of the day they looked very tempting for a lie down!
The whole operation was ran so smoothly, it was clear everyone knew what had to be done and how best to execute it. The vets and vet techs were incredible, their work was amazingly tidy, quick and they showed compassion, care and love to each and every animal. All animals were checked in and out much like a hotel, their travel cages were cleaned and made cosy for their journey home. An incredible lunch was provided for all staff and volunteers. It was amazing experience and we can't wait to do it all over again!

As a member of the staff (vet technician), I can tell you first hand about people's reaction to our work. There isn't a place in Romania where we've been so far, where people aren't happy to see us and express their gratitude. I see children and young people who are so careful and loving towards their pets and come from miles and miles just so they can give their pets the chance of a healthy life and others who, even thou they haven't been taught to appreciate them at their true value, learn from our example and go home with a different view towards their animals' welfare than before. Often times I heard old people saying "thank God you came and gave us this opportunity, as we are so tired of living in sin, killing the unwanted puppies year after year!" Being able to help them do the right thing and showing them there is a humane way to handle the overpopulation of dogs and cats in Romania is the true meaning of what we are doing, apart from saving so many animals from torture. I am always happy to see good people caring for their animals in a way that goes beyond financial means or even education; we are also involved in educating the young generation, as we are aware of the responsibility of securing that our work and goals go on even after we are no longer here to see it.
As for our work with the animals, as a vet technician, I am always careful about treating each animal as an individual and adapting my work and my recommendation to the vets according to the animals' needs. I am never far away from the recovery area and no animal is treated with less consideration and care, no matter their breed or where they come from ( owned or stray) and no matter how busy I find myself during a day that may end with more than 100 animals spayed/neutered. There can be no doubt about the quality of our work, with almost 50.000 spays in Romania and abroad, if animals were getting sick or dying, the world would have found out one way or another. Instead, there are millions of unborn animals spared from a life of pointless suffering and despair.

The best charity in Romania! Thank you RAR for all your hard work! So glad you split from the fraudulent Rolda in 2006 . You have gained your angel wings and are soaring high. I cannot imagine what Romanian animals would do without you!

I have been a happy donor of Romania Animal Rescue since 2006. RAR has grown in size and donations, yet they have remained a grass-roots organization. Because of this more of my donation goes to the animals instead of administrative costs. I donate to RAR because they are making a difference in the communities of Romania.

A HUGE THANK YOU to RAR for your help with donations for spays in Tirgoviste, Romania! RAR has financially supported me with spaying strays (dogs and cats) in this small town near Bucharest! Thank you, Nancy Janes and Almavet Team, your work and dedication is amaizing!

Please continue to support RAR by donating! Each penny goes to the neutering of strays so that no other unhappy puppies and kittens reach the streets where awful diseases and cruel death awaits them! Please SHARE and DONATE to RAR mission for animal welfare!

Hi, every body! Unfortunately, I have bad news about the S/N Day from Tecuci. We are not able to be there because of the weather. All the roads are blocked because of the snow and we are going to do the campaign next week or later when the weather will permit us. Till then, I wish you an easy winter and many hugs!
I want to thank you all the donnors who are supporting us with the free S/N program in Tecuci. Thanks to your generosity here, in Tecuci, are increasingly fewer puppies and kittens. We cannot be happyer to see the difference on the streets from this point of vew. I talked to the mayor and asked him if he saw puppies on the streets as he used to. His answer surprised me a little bit and my ears were so happy ! You don`t hear every day a mayor from Romania telling the Spay/Neuter Programe is good and we see less dogs on the streets, belive me! He admited there is a very big difference between before the castrations of the dogs with owner and after the castrations. He thanked to all the people envolved in this great project and told me he hoppes we will not stop now! We make the difference and it is very important to go on! Our mayor promised he will continue, too, the castration of stray dogs and I think this make all of us very happy. We are so grateful to all good and loving people who donated for Romania Animal Rescue and we are also so grateful to Nancy Janes because she answered to our animal`s needs! God, we are so lucky she exists in this world and we met her! Thank you every body for all you support and involving! Neuter/Spay, No More Stray!
