Results: Founded in 1979 as a vet student club, the Rocky Mountain Raptor Program has grown and evolved over the years. Treating only 5 birds a year in the early years, we now see about 300 a year. Since our founding, we have treated well over 6000 raptors. We have educated hundreds of thousands of people to respect and appreciate raptors in our world, and conducted dozens of research projects that protect raptors in the wild.
Target demographics: injured raptors and the community
Direct beneficiaries per year: Nearly 300 injured raptors from Northern Colorado & Southern Wyoming, while providing education services to 50,000 people, and conducting more than 15 research projects.
Geographic areas served: Northern Colorado and Southern Wyoming
Programs: Rehabilitation
“A Second Chance at Freedom” is the goal for every raptor that comes into our facility. The RMRP staff of experienced, licensed raptor rehabilitators works closely with Colorado State University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital's avian veterinarians to ensure quality care for every patient that needs our help.
Education
As the world changes around us, the importance of community driven conservation is growing. We believe that education, at all stages of life, can inspire people to take action to preserve the things they care about; and our passion is inspiring people to care about raptors and the natural world.
Research
Our Research program increases the world’s knowledge of how to protect raptors from environmental hazards. We conduct life-saving research to give wild raptors every chance of never seeing the inside of our facility. With about 300 raptors admitted each year, we have a wonderful basis for collection of data for a variety of research projects to help those in the wild. The presence of toxic substances and contagious diseases can be quickly discovered by studying the birds we rehabilitate. Much of our research involves power line and wind turbine safety.
