My wife and I have been taking our kids to RMEF volunteer projects for 15+ years and we have donated money to RMEF because they work with private landowners to either preserve habitat via easements or transfer the land to the public. Most of the projects focus on removing old barbed wire fences that entangle deer and elk. The volunteers at RMEF work closely with the US Forest Service and the State Wildlife agencies to find old fences that are no longer needed (property boundaries changed, etc) and remove the hazard to wildlife. It's hard work, but the family atmosphere is what brings us back year after year. This organization has great people doing great things! https://elknetwork.com/15miles/

For the past 10 years my family has been volunteering with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation to remove old barbed wire fencing that presents an entanglement hazard for elk and other wildlife. The people we volunteer with are like family even though we only see them once a year. The fact that everyone knows that every person there is giving their time to do a really difficult job in bad weather, on steep terrain, walking through thick undergrowth while dealing with mosquitoes makes for great friendships. Everyone just pulls together and makes the hard work actually enjoyable.
