Mission: As a catalyst for sustainability and community building, our mission is to: 1) provide enriching educational and community programs focused on the natural sciences, social determinants of health, cultural arts and outdoor recreation; 2) facilitate college access, career building and recreational opportunities for local youth through job training and educational programs; 3) provide a centralized, community-based destination (rise) for shared learning and experiences in civic justice and social equity, health & wellness, arts/cultural events focused on regional environmental concerns; 4) strengthen the community's role as advocates through community planning efforts to support a vibrant and more sustainable coastal community.
Programs: Living classroom:in partnership with nyc public schools, rwa organizes hands-on workshops and field trips with k-12 classes along the beach and the estuarine shoreline of jamaica bay-which are ideal "living" classrooms. In 2017 the living classroom served over 2,000 students.
shore corps internship:a service learning leadership and "green" job readiness program for high school students engages youth in environmental stewardship projects such as oyster restoration and floatable debris removal; maintenance of street trees; post-sandy shoreline conservation; and maintaining the rockaway hip-hop garden. The youth become environmental ambassadors, sharing environmental messages and practices such as recycling and conservation, with their families/peers. Over 75 youth completed the program in 2017.
environmentor internship:program offers high school sophomores and juniors opportunities to conduct authentic research under the mentorship of field scientists from brooklyn college, baruch college, cuny and the jamaica bay science & resilience institute. 12 students served in 2017.
aqua 101 summer program:this intensive 4-week summer program for youth, ages 8 - 13, focuses on environmental stewardship and water sports recreation to promote the health, safety and wellbeing of local youth and the local environment. Students take part in field trips, environmental arts projects, urban gardening, beach clean-ups, biking, swimming, kayaking and surfing. 120 students participated in the 2017 summer program.
