Mission: The Rock Club Rock For Vets mission is to create a music education/instructional program for Veterans and others at-risk by offering music education/instruction classes. Whether one can already play an instrument, can sing or if they just have the desire to learn and while building career skills transferable to the music industry all in a supportive and educational environment.
Results: Through twice weekly meetings/practice/rehearsals, participants will be able to fully engage in the music program. They will have learned to sing/play or master an instrument, will be able to better engage in group process, socialize and improve their relationships with family and friends. Pre and post testing is in the process of being developed but we have numerous testimonials from participants whose lives have greatly improved: "This program gave me a reason to live. "I no longer have thoughts of suicide". Jeffery Pollock, USAF (ret.) Rock for Vets participant. Each participant is on a continuum of recovery. Some move along faster than others (some do not and some are not challenged enough) and each person develops and recovers life skills at a different pace. Many report that by performing for each other and in public to resounding applause, they are building their self esteem, compassion for others, are better able to interact in a group setting. By developing new coping skills, they now respect themselves and others. Participants often find recovery in helping another individual on their journey. With the Veterans whom suffer PTSD and other physical and mental illnesses also benefit their home life as they are engaging in family events and including dining with the family together again and to say that they are not grinding their teeth anymore, that they are now able to engage in sexual relations again. Participants also overcome their issues of shyness by being able to perform in front of the public and peers pride and confidence. The at-risk youth are doing better with grades and not being a social problem as in the past. Some success stories include, Veterans getting jobs and feeling more confident to go into the interview process, two Veterans now have full scholarships to Musicians Institute, kids graduating and being a family again. This has instilled a sense of pride and the participants are teaching others the skills they have learned and some are now producing an income for themselves.
