Causes: Health, Organ & Tissue Banks
Mission: To recover & distribute eyes, organs and tissues for use in medical education, research, therapy, & transplantation; to promote awareness of the need for and the benefits of donating; to provide medical research grants - all to improve the quality of life for individuals & their families.
Programs: Re&hpb recovered eyes as well as cardiovascular, skin and musculosckeletal tissues for transplant and research use. In this fiscal year, there were 235 eye donors and 70 donors of other tissues. From these donors, 333 people received sight-restoring cornea transplants; 12 people received human heart valves; 16 bypass operations were possible using donor veins. Donated bone and connective tissues, such as pericardium, fascia and tendons were available for over 5,250 procedures. A return to normal, active lives was a gift to 150 skin recipients.
re&hpb presented to nearly 500 students in grades 6-college level; participated in 53 health fairs and gave 25 presentations in the community; distributed over 5,400 brochures with nys donate life enrollment form included. A total of 841 donor enrollment forms were added to the ny state donate life registry administered by the nys department of health. In addition, healthcare professionals completed re&hpb training and made 3,644 referrals this year for potential eye and tissue donation.
