Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Cancer

Mission: To evoke positive and permanent change in the lives of every child coping with pediatric cancer, while instilling hope in their lives, and the lives of their loved ones.

Geographic areas served: Roc Solid Foundation currently serves Virginia, Maryland, D.C., North Carolina and Tennessee.

Programs: Roc Solid’s flagship program, Play It Forward, has constructed dozens of custom playsets for children battling cancer throughout the country. During each project, the children and their families are taken out by limo for the morning, and when they return home, they are surprised with brand new wooden playsets in their backyards. While the concept is simple, its impact is far-reaching and immensely rewarding. Launched in 2012, the Roc Solid Ready Bag is given to parents who have recently learned that their child has cancer and will be undergoing a long series of treatments. The bag contains everything the family might need during an unexpected hospital stay, which often happens immediately after diagnoses, including a blanket, toiletries, pens, journals, coloring books, a preloaded debit card, quarters for the vending machines and an Amazon Kindle Fire. Re: Mission | Remodel is an extension of Play It Forward program, designed for pediatric cancer patients between the ages of nine and 18 or those whose living situation prevents Roc Solid from being able to build a playset (i.e. they live in an apartment or condo). Every kid's asked, "what do you want to be when you grow up?" Our When I Grow Up program lets children stricken with pediatric cancer fulfill those aspirations by pairing with a real life professional that shows them the ropes of their "dream job." From firefighters, to fashion designers; physical therapists to archeologists, we do all we can to inspire the courage to keep fighting. Because after all, growing up– means getting better.

There's nothing like visiting a playset build to see the impact of your donation first-hand. Seeing the smile on a child's face when they run to their new playset is an amazing moment. This is joy. Roc Solid makes a positive & rewarding impact on the lives of children with cancer and their families. Wise use of resources by board and staff. Much of the office furniture was hand-built by the Executive Director from leftover wood and building materials to save money. Operations are run mainly by volunteers, and by a handful of paid PT and one FT staff. Effective, efficient and able to produce a lot of impact for children facing cancer with a small investment of donor contributions. Good at reaching out to the community and establishing partnerships with corporate sponsors, volunteers, and other partners. Combines donor contributions with volunteer labor, and brings hope & joy to children and families facing a very serious illness. A winning partnership all around.

The smile on a cancer child's face when they get to see the playground that our volunteers have build for them is a priceless moment, that I will remember every day for the rest of my life. I love every aspect of this foundation; Making kids smile, taking them in a limo ride while volunteers build, fundraising benefits like the Night for the Fight, or our Large Mouth Brown Trout Fishing Tournament. At the end of every day, all that matters to this foundation is, how we can build hope for children with cancer.
