Mission: The mission of Students Run Oakland (SRO) is to provide an after-school mentoring and physical fitness program for at-risk public high school students in Oakland. Our objective is to enable these students to realize their potential and plot a new course for their future by their participation in a truly life-changing experience: the training for and completion of a 26.2 mile marathon.
Programs: Participating students commit to a five month training regimen which involves running three days a week after-school, with one longer run each weekend. Under the leadership of experienced teachers and distance runners, the students begin running in the fall and gradually increase their mileage as they prepare for running the Los Angeles Marathon in March. Throughout the structured training, the focus is on developing good running and eating habits, self-discipline, and a spirit of cooperation and sportsmanship.
